TOP 5: New York Comic-Con 2012, First Trailer for HITCHCOCK, SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS Interviews, DJANGO UNCHAINED, ARROW Interviews

by     Posted 2 years, 67 days ago

As a preamble to this week’s Top 5, I’d like to take a few lines to recognize my own personal “Top 2″ from the past 7 days: the St. Louis Cardinals and Warner Premiere’s animated adaptation of Frank Miller‘s classic tale The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1. Beginning with the former, my beloved Cardinals completed yet another historic comeback last night against the Washington Nationals. Win or lose, I think it’s necessary to get in writing here that I won’t have a single negative thing to say about this team the rest of the way. As for the latter, I had a chance to sit down with director Jay Oliva‘s animated adaptation the other day and I found it to be a worthy retelling of Miller’s classic Bat-story. If you have any interest in animated comic adaptations and have yet to check it out, I recommend doing so.

But enough of my own personal favorites, included in this week’s trip around the bases (yep, that’s another baseball reference) is our coverage of New York Comic-Con 2012, the first trailer for director Sacha Gervasi‘s Hitchcock, Seven Psychopaths interviews with Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken and more, a new trailer for Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained, and a slew of interviews for The CW’s new superhero series, Arrow. A brief recap and link to each awaits.

First Trailer and New Poster for HITCHCOCK Starring Anthony Hopkins

by     Posted 2 years, 70 days ago

The first trailer and a new poster for director Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock have been released.  The film looks absolutely fascinating, with killer performances from stars Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren as the legendary director and his wife.  The story chronicles the troubled production of Psycho, but there’s a great deal of humor sprinkled throughout this trailer to balance the more dramatic material.  The chemistry between Hopkins and Mirren is palpable, and the makeup work on Hopkins is simply stunning.  Though the fall movie season is already packed with some fantastically promising films, this swell first trailer has rocketed Hitchcock towards the top of my most anticipated list.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer and check out the poster.  The film also stars Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Kurtwood SmithHitchcock opens on November 23rd.

New Images from HITCHCOCK Starring Anthony Hopkins and BEAUTIFUL CREATURES with Emmy Rossum

by     Posted 2 years, 72 days ago

A batch of new images from director Sacha Gervasi’s Hitchcock and a new look at Emmy Rossum in the fantasy adaptation Beautiful Creatures have landed online.  We previously saw a few low-quality images from Hitchcock last week, but this new crop gives us a much better look at Anthony Hopkins as the legendary director, Helen Mirren as his wife, Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, and James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins.  The highly anticipated film takes place during the production of the horror classic Psycho and centers on the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife.  The pic opens on November 23rd.

Additionally, a new image of Emmy Rossum in director Richard LaGrevenese’s Southern supernatural romance adaptation Beautiful Creatures has surfaced.  The story centers on two mystically charged teens who are mysteriously drawn to one another despite never having met, and uncover some unsettling secrets about their families and the small southern town in which they live.  The film opens on February 13th, 2013.  Hit the jump to check out images from Hitchcock and Beautiful Creatures.

New Images from HITCHCOCK Starring Anthony Hopkins, Scarlett Johansson, and Jessica Biel

A few new images from the real-life drama Hitchcock have landed online.  The film stars Anthony Hopkins as the legendary director and centers on his relationship with his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren) during the troubled production of Psycho.  Fox Searchlight recently pushed the film into a prime awards season November release date, and the pic is slated to make its world premiere at the AFI Fest on November 1st.  These images give us a look at Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, and James D’Arcy as Norman Bates himself, Tony Perkins.  We also get a look at Hopkins and Mirren as Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock.  Backstage stories are always fascinating and I can’t wait to see what director Sacha Gervasi has put together.

HITCHCOCK to Make World Premiere at AFI Fest

by     Posted 2 years, 83 days ago

When director Sacha Gervasi’s drama Hitchcock entered production this year, most assumed that we wouldn’t see the pic until next awards season.  However, after getting a look at the finished film, Fox Searchlight just recently decided to throw the Anthony Hopkins-fronted pic into this year’s awards race with a November release date.  Now the American Film Institute has announced that Hitchcock has been selected as the AFI Fest’s opening night film, where it will make its world premiere.  The film takes place during the troubled production of legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and centers on the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).

The stacked cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, James D’Arcy, Toni Collette and Michael Stuhlbarg, so I’m eager to hear first impressions of the film from the festival.  AFI has also chosen Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln as the festival’s closing night film, so AFI Fest is shaping up to be one hell of an event.  Expect the first reactions to Hitchcock on November 1st, when it premieres at the festival.  The film hits theaters on November 23rd.  Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Ivan Reitman and Lauren Shuler Donner Talk DAVE on Blu-ray, How Gary Ross Got Involved, As Well As Sequel News for GHOSTBUSTERS and TWINS

by     Posted 2 years, 86 days ago

Just in time for the presidential election, the hit romantic comedy Dave, from director Ivan Reitman and screenwriter Gary Ross, debuts on Blu-ray on September 25th, for the first time since its 1993 theatrical release.  The film tells the story about what happens when the U.S. President goes into a coma and a mild-mannered office manager, named Dave Kovic (Kevin Kline), with an uncanny resemblance is hired to impersonate him and fool not only an entire country, but also an increasingly suspicious First Lady (Sigourney Weaver).

At a press day for the Blu-ray release, director Ivan Reitman and producer Lauren Shuler Donner talked about how Gary Ross came to write the film, how the script was developed, what made Kevin Kline the right actor to pull off the dual role, why Sigourney Weaver was the perfect First Lady, and how they think young audiences will react to the film today.  Reitman also talked about the huge interest in sequels these days, the status of another Ghostbusters film and the Twins sequel, Triplets, and how he thinks audiences will be knocked out by the story they’re telling in Hitchcock (due out November 23rd and starring Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren), which he’s producing, and Shuler Donner talked about the importance of focusing on character when you’re making superhero movies, like she’s done with the X-Men films.  Check out what they had to say after the jump.

by     Posted 2 years, 151 days ago

Last weekend at Comic-Con, I got to sit down with Jessica Biel for an extended video interview.  While she was in San Diego to promote director Len Wiseman‘s Total Recall (she plays Melina), during our wide ranging conversation we talked about her favorite movies, what it was like to make Total Recall, will David O. Russell‘s Nailed every get released, The A-Team‘s disappointing box office, director Sacha Gervasi‘s Hitchcock (she plays Vera Miles), what she collects, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Set Photo Round-Up: First Look at Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh in HITCHCOCK; Ben Stiller and Adam Scott Face Off in WALTER MITTY

by     Posted 2 years, 217 days ago

We’ve got a couple of set photos to share this morning.  First up is Scarlett Johansson in Hitchcock. Last month we got our first look at Anthony Hopkins in his full, uncanny makeup as legendary filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock for the film.  Directed by Sacha Gervasi, the pic follows Hitchcock through the troubled production of Psycho, and we now have our first look at Johansson as the film’s “star” Janet Leigh.  It’s not the best image, but Johansson does certainly look the part.  This project is incredibly high on my most anticipated list, especially with a stacked cast that includes Helen Mirren, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Danny Huston and more.

Additionally, we’ve got our first images of Ben Stiller and a fake beareded-Adam Scott fighting over a Stretch Armstrong doll for some reason in the remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.  Stiller is directing the project, which also stars Kristin Wiig, Shirley MacLaine, and Patton Oswalt.  Hit the jump to check out the images. [Update: We've removed the unofficial images.]

TOP 5: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, MAGIC MIKE, Anthony Hopkins in HITCHCOCK, Set Photo/Video Recap, What Superhero Films Could Learn from BATMAN: THE MOVIE

by     Posted 2 years, 242 days ago

If you’re a regular around these parts on the weekends you may have noticed that Collider was “Top 5-less” last Saturday. For the first time since our inaugural installment last May, the weekly feature failed to grace the site. The reason? My bachelor party. That’s right, instead of spending my Saturday morning/afternoon putting together a highlight reel of coverage from the preceding week, I gallivanted through the streets of Chicago partaking in debauchery in its most primal form (i.e. arcade games and karaoke). All this in mind, a big thank you to Steve and the rest of the Collider team and to you, the reader, for the excused absence is in order. It’s good to be back.

In this week’s edition you’ll find new posters and new footage from The Amazing-Spider Man courtesy of the film’s latest international trailer, the first trailer and poster for Steven Soderbergh‘s male-stripper inspired Magic Mike, the first look at Anthony Hopkins as The Master of Suspense in Hitchcock, a set photo/video recap featuring, among other things, Star Trek 2 and Les Miserables, and Matt’s superhero film editorial which begs the question, “Why So Serious?” (see what I did there?). As always, a brief recap and link to each can be found after the jump.

First Look at Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock in HITCHCOCK

by     Posted 2 years, 245 days ago

Production is underway on director Sacha Gervasi‘s Hitchcock (formerly titled Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho), and we now have our first look at Anthony Hopkins completely transformed as the legendary director.  The resemblance is quite startling, and Hopkins looks to be under a good deal of (very well-done) makeup.  It’s certainly a different look than Toby Jones is going for on the competing Hitchcock film The Girl, which focuses on the director’s obsessive relationship with his The Birds star Tippi Hedren Hitchcock, meanwhile, is described as a love story between Hitchcock and his wife and partner Alma Reville (Helen Mirren) which takes place during the troublesome production of the horror classic Psycho.

Hit the jump to get a look at Hopkins as Hitchcock.  The stellar cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Kurtwood Smith.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK AND THE MAKING OF PSYCHO Gets New Title and Begins Principal Photography

by     Posted 2 years, 251 days ago

Sacha Gervasi‘s Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho has picked up a new title, and begun principal photography.  The film will now simply be entitled “Hitchock“, which is probably better since the previous title sounds more fitting for a documentary.  Hitchcock is being billed as a love story between the legendary director (played by Anthony Hopkings) and his wife and partner Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).  The movie also stars Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg, Kurtwood Smith, Wallace Langham, Richard Portnow, and Michael Wincott.
