FilmDistrict has released the first teaser trailer for Resident Evil and The Three Musketeers director Paul W.S. Anderson’s upcoming Mount Vesuvius actioner Pompeii.  The film stars Kit Harington as an enslaved Celtic gladiator named Milo who falls in love with a noblewoman (Emily Browning) on the eve of a massive volcanic eruption that destroys Pompeii, an event that also brings him face-to-face with the man who slaughtered his family years earlier.  This teaser opens up by quietly playing on the familiar imagery of the Pompeii citizens fossilized in ash, followed by a brief glimpse of footage.  While it’s tough to suss out the character interplay from this teaser, it’s clear that Anderson is not holding back when it comes to volcano carnage (as if you thought he would).  We’ve come a long way since Dante’s Peak and Volcano, folks.

A new trailer has been released for the adaptation of the young adult novel, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.  Set in modern-day NYC, the film tells the story of Clary Fray (Lily Collins), a seemingly ordinary teenager who discovers that she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret organization of young half-angel warriors in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons.  I have no familiarity with the source material, so I’m more interested to know how fans are responding to this adaptation.  From an outsider’s perspective, I’m fairly indifferent since nothing in this trailer or the previous one has really grabbed at me.

A new trailer for director Harald Zwart’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones has gone online.  I got to check out this particular trailer at the WonderCon panel and I was impressed by the caliber and amount of action on display.  I’m sure that fans of the source material will pick up on a lot more of the mythology than a novice like myself, but it’s got a cool aesthetic that actually looks rather inviting.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, based on the Cassandra Clare novel, stars Lily Collins, Lena Headey, Robert Sheehan, Jamie Campbell Bower, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Kevin Zegers, Kevin Durand, Jared Harris and CCH Pounder. The film opens on August 23rd, 2013.  Hit the jump to view the trailer.

TOP 5: A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD, THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES Set Visit, VES Awards Interviews, BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, Toy Fair 2013

Before I dive headfirst into what could be considered overselling to the “nth degree”, I have a disclaimer: I’m a total sucker for nostalgia-inducing, high school-centric, coming of age films. With that out of the way, I cannot recommend enough that you watch author/writer/director Stephen Chboksy‘s adaptation of his own novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, as soon as possible. The pic hit Blu-ray/DVD this past week and over the course of 24 hours I rented it, watched it, loved it, returned it (yes, somehow late fees are still a thing…), and purchased it for my own collection. I could go on and on about the emotional note the movie hit for me at every turn but I’ll spare you the fanboy torment. Suffice to say that I’ll be looking back fondly on this one for quite a while.

My “Blu-ray/DVD pick of the week” aside, this week’s installment features a week of Die Hard that includes Matt revisiting the entire franchise and A Good Day to Die Hard interviews with Bruce Willis and more, coverage from Steve’s visit to the set of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, a slew of video interviews from this year’s VES Awards including talks with Ang Lee and Wally Pfister just to name a few, Beautiful Creatures interviews with Emmy Rossum and more, and a healthy amount of images from the floor of Toy Fair 2013. Yep, you guessed it, a brief recap and link to each of the above can be found on the other side.

35 Things to Know About THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES From Our Set Visit

Valentine Morgenstern (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is holding Clary Fray (Lily Collins) down on a long wooden table.  He’s angry, and getting more frustrated with each passing second.  Standing close by is Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower), who is covered in tattoos, and he looks concerned.  After some time passes, Valentine screams “I want my cup!” A second later, he slams Clary’s head onto the table and turns around and hits Jace.  Immediately Jace says, “you said you wouldn’t hurt her!” and then grabs a long wooden staff to go in for the attack.  A second later, I hear director Harald Zwart call cut.

But let me back up a second.

About four months ago, I got to visit the set of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones with a few other reporters when the production was filming in Toronto.  While on set I participated in group interviews with the cast and filmmakers, watched a few scenes get filmed, and saw firsthand how Cassandre Clare’s extremely popular young adult series was being brought to life.  And from what I saw on set, if you’re a fan of the series, I think you’re going to be extremely happy.  Hit the jump for more.

Anytime you cast Jared Harris, you’ve made the right choice.  That’s because over the past two decades, and especially the last few years on Mad Men, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and Lincoln, Harris has played every type of role and always makes it look easy.   In director Harald Zwart’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Harris is taking on a new challenge: playing a Shadowhunter named Hodge Starkweather.  In the universe of The Mortal Instruments, the shadowhunters are a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons.

During a group interview on set last year in Toronto, Harris talked about how he got the role, the differences between the book and movie, his preparation process, Sherlock Holmes, what it’s been like filming the action scenes, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to either read or listen to what he had to say.

Laika and Focus Features are teaming up once again for The Boxtrolls.  Their third production will be the 3D stop motion and CG hybrid animated adaptation of Alan Snow’s “Here Be Monsters.”  The story centers on a posh Victorian-era town of people obsessed with finery and stinky cheese, but are plagued by an underground society of foul monsters who steal their children…and cheese.  Similar in themes to their previous productions Coraline and ParaNorman, the under-dwellers are not exactly what the citizens’ legends say they are.

Directed by Anthony Stacchi (Open Season) and Graham Annable (a story artist on Coraline and ParaNorman), The Boxtrolls features an impressive voice cast featuring Ben Kingsley, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan.  The Boxtrolls is due out October 17, 2014.  Hit the jump to see the full synopsis along with the first concept image from the film.

First Trailer for THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES Starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower

Screen Gems has released the first trailer for the adaptation of Cassandra Clare‘s young adult novel The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.  The story follows Clary Fray (Lily Collins), a teenage girl who discovers that she’s descended from a sect of half-angel warriors who protect the world from demons.  As a teen drama with ties to the occult, The Mortal Instruments will draw comparisons to Twilight.  But the trailer—specifically the sword fights and flamethrowers within— suggest more ass-kicking.  There is a big world and dense mythology here to explore, and the visuals help sell it better than the synopsis ever could.  It helps when you have Mad Men‘s eloquent Jared Harris to deliver the exposition in what sure looks like the “Giles” role.

Jamie Campbell Bower, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Lena Headey, Kevin Durand, CCH Pounder, and Kevin Zegers also star.  Directed by Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid), The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones opens August 23, 2013.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

International Trailer for LINCOLN Is the Best One Yet

Just in time for Election Day, a new international trailer for director Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln has been released, and it’s by far the best one yet.  This trailer actually delves into the central focus of the long-in-the-works drama—the passing of the 13th Amendment—and gives us a much better idea of what kind of biopic Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner have crafted.  Much of this trailer is reminiscent of The West Wing, with Daniel Day-Lewis’ Lincoln and his advisers working to secure enough votes to ensure that the amendment will pass.  The trailer also teases the multitude of strong performances from the ridiculously talented ensemble, and I can’t wait to see the whole thing unfold onscreen.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Oyelowo, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, John Hawkes, Michael Stuhlbarg, David Strathairn, Walton Goggins, Tim Blake Nelson, Bruce McGill, Jackie Earle Haley, Lee Pace and Jared HarrisLincoln opens on November 16th.

First Full Trailer and New Images for Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN Starring Daniel Day-Lewis

We posted the first teaser trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln earlier this week in anticipation of the full trailer being released during the Google + Q&A.  Now that the full trailer is online, we finally get a chance to hear Daniel Day-Lewis speak as Abraham Lincoln.  If I’m being honest, his choice of tone and inflection is not exactly what I had expected, but who am I to tell Day-Lewis what to do?  There are plenty of scenes in the legislative houses, on the streets and on the battlefield, and they all give a sense of scope and tone to the film, just like Spielberg said it would during the Q&A.

First Teaser Trailer for Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN Starring Daniel Day-Lewis

The first teaser trailer for director Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln has been released.  The teaser comes just days ahead of the first full trailer and live Google+ Q&A with Spielberg and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  The teaser gives us our first look at Daniel Day-Lewis in motion, though we only see glimpses of him as the titular President.  There’s also a shot of who appears to be David Oyelowo dressed in Union attire as he turns and walks away from Lincoln.  A narration of the Gettysburg address plays over scenes of Civil War combat, but who is speaking remains unclear for the moment.
