AMERICAN HUSTLE Blu-ray Review

It may speak to the year or the film itself, but David O. Russell’s American Hustle exploded on the scene, arriving to quickly become an Oscar front runner, and netting ten nominations in the process (while also grossing nearly $150 Million at the box office).  But by the time of the awards ceremony, Hustle went home empty handed, even though stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence we all nominated.  The film turned out to be all sizzle and no steak.  Which is actually the story of the movie as two hustlers are put on the spot by the FBI to help catch bigger swindlers.

New Trailer and Poster for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Starring Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, and James McAvoy

20th Century Fox has released a new trailer and poster for director Bryan Singer’s highly anticipated superhero sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past.  The follow-up finds Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) having his consciousness sent back to 1973 in order to help Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and the rest of the X-Men: First Class crew stop Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) and the rise of the Sentinels, giant robots programmed to exterminate mutants.  This trailer is terrific.  It shows the darker tone that Signer mentioned, and the character drama looks as strong as the action scenes.  As for this new poster, it’s just awful.  If you’re going t o pay millions of dollars for a marketing campaign, perhaps it’s best to find a person who understands composition rather than making it look like Professor X farted an explosion.

Hit the jump to check out the new trailer and poster, and if you missed any of Steve’s extensive set visit coverage, click here.  The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Evan Peters, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Halle Berry, Lucas Till, Omar Sy, Adan Canto, Daniel Cudmore, and Bingbing FanX-Men: Days of Future Past opens in 2D and 3D on May 23rd.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 129 days ago

hunger-games-catching-fire-jennifer-lawrence

It’s hard not to be impressed by blockbusters right now.  2013’s top three films were The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Iron Man 3 and Frozen.  All good to great movies.  Catching Fire proved the most successful of the lot, grossing well over $400 million, and even outperformed the first film.  Jennifer Lawrence stars as Katniss Everdeen, who is forced to compete in a battle royale yet again in the savage Quarter Quell with Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) at her side, and with her love Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) watching from a distance.  My The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Blu-ray review follows after the jump.

Next week, 20th Century Fox will release a new trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past, and so today they’re release a teaser for that trailer (ugh).  For those not familiar with the story, the movie finds Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) having his consciousness sent back to 1973 in order to help Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and the rest of the X-Men: First Class crew stop the rise of the Sentinels, giant robots programmed to exterminate mutants.  20th Century Fox seems fond of releasing trailer teasers for the movie, and this one is in a 3×3 grid reminiscent of The Brady Bunch.  Mystique is such a Marcia.

Check out Deleted Scenes from THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE and THOR: THE DARK WORLD

A deleted scene has been released from the upcoming Blu-ray/DVD for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire as well as another deleted scene from Thor: The Dark World.  The Catching Fire scene has Sam Claflin explaining how his learning to tie a noose in less than ten seconds ultimately went to waste, and while this scene does show more of his character Finnick Odair being charming, I can understand why it was left on the cutting room floor.  As for the scene from Thor, it’s a brief fight between Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and some Asgardian guards, and that’s about it.

Hit the jump to check out the deleted scenes.  Click here to pre-order The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which will be released on March 7th.  Thor: The Dark World is now available to own, and you can click here to go buy it.

After running down predictions for the Oscars in a number of categories over the past two days, we’ve now come to the big ones.  As I’ve said many times before over the course of this awards season, this is quite possibly the closest Best Picture race in history; a coin flip would not be unwarranted.  And while some of the acting categories are pretty sewn up, Supporting Actress remains a bit tricky and there’s some intense competition in the race for Best Original Screenplay.  I’ve had a lot of fun covering this year’s awards race over the last five months with Oscar Beat and I look forward to doing it all over again this fall, but for now here’s the culmination of this season’s coverage.

After the jump you’ll find my predictions for the final categories ahead of this weekend’s Academy Awards ceremony as well as my full predictions list for the ceremony, and if you missed Part 1 or Part 2 be sure to check them out.  The 86th Academy Awards will air on Sunday, March 2nd on ABC, during which time our own Matt Goldberg will be live-blogging the ceremony right here on Collider.

2014-oscars

After a slow roll-out of announcements that began a few weeks ago, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the full list of presenters for the upcoming 86th Academy Awards ceremony.  As expected, there are plenty of previous winners poised to make appearances, including all four of last year’s acting winners (Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, Christoph Waltz, and Anne Hathaway), as well as some members of “young Hollywood” to appeal to the younger viewers (Anna Kendrick, Michael B. Jordan, Emma Watson, Zac Efron, Channing Tatum).  On the “legends” side of things, we can also look forward to seeing presentations from Sidney Poitier and Bill Murray.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts handed out its awards this evening, and while the BAFTAs have increasingly become a solid bellwether of how the Oscars will vote, tonight’s tallies do little to settle the virtual tie between Gravity and 12 Years a SlaveGravity won the most awards of the night with six, including Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron and Best British Film, but 12 Years a Slave took the top honors as Best Film as well as Best Actor for Chiwetel EjioforAmerican Hustle also had a fairly strong showing with three awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence over 12 Years a Slave’s Lupita Nyong’Oone of this year’s toughest categories.

Oscar Beat: Breaking Down This Year’s Toughest Races

The Academy Awards ceremony is now only a few weeks away, and though it’s been a month since the nominations were announced, there are still a number of races that are shaping up to be very, very close.  It’s been clear since the fall festival circuit that this was going to be a tough year, but it really is shaping up to be one of the most competitive Best Picture races in history.  Moreover, there’s been plenty of nastiness behind-the-scenes from those trying to slow down the momentum of one film or another: Gravity is inaccurate!” “The Wolf of Wall Street” condones despicable behavior! “12 Years a Slave” is too hard to watch!

We’ve seen frontrunners rise and fall over the past few months in a number of categories, and with the official ceremony within arms reach, now seems like a good time to take a look at the toughest races.  There’s plenty of competition to thumb through, so hit the jump to check out this latest installment of Oscar Beat.

New X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Images Featuring Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Hugh Jackman

A few new images from director Bryan Singer’s upcoming “inbetweenquel” X-Men: Days of Future Past have landed online.  The story finds Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) having his consciousness sent back to 1973 in order to help Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and the rest of the X-Men: First Class crew stop the rise of the Sentinels, giant robots programmed to exterminate mutants.  A few of these new images are high-resolution versions of previously released images, while a couple others are promo photos of Fassbender and Ian McKellen as Magneto.  All in all, this gives us a better look at the updated costumes that Singer has crafted, and the McAvoy/Stewart image is rather exciting.  With the summer movie season only a few months away, I expect we’ll see a second trailer for the film sooner rather than later.

Hit the jump to check out the new images.  The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Peter Dinklage, Evan Peters, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Halle Berry, and Patrick StewartX-Men: Days of Future Past opens in 3D on May 23rd.

David O. Russell Wants Jennifer Lawrence for Biopic About Miracle Mop Inventor Joy Mangano

David O. Russell is in early talks to rewrite a Fox 2000 project about Miracle Mop inventor Joy Mangano with the intent to direct.  The director wants his Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle muse Jennifer Lawrence to play Long Island native Mangano.  Mangano was a single mother of three when she developed the prototype for her Miracle Mop in 1990.  The Miracle Mop became a big seller on QVC when Mangano went on air to pitch the product, selling out 18,000 mops in 20 minutes.  Over 5 million mops later, Mangano now has 100+ patents (including Huggable Hangers) and has become one of HSN’s best-selling presenters.  More after the jump.

Following 25 magazine covers featuring the characters, Empire has now released four new images from X-Men: Days of Future Past. As you can see from the image showing Wolverine, he still has his bone claws.  That’s because young William Stryker (played by Josh Helman) hasn’t started up the Weapon X program yet.  I like that consistency in the narrative, and I wonder how much Weapon X will come up in the movie.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Empire Covers – Part 2: Mystique, Beast, Quicksilver, Magneto, and Professor X

Empire Magazine has posted the next five covers their X-Men: Days of Future Past series.  These covers feature Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), and Professor X (James McAvoy).  Quicksilver is the newcomer among these five, and his costume is so, so very bad.  I understand the goggles are because someone who runs really fast wouldn’t be able to see without them because of the wind resistance, but on the other hand, it’s a fictional character and you can do whatever you want.  Also, if that’s how he dresses himself, his eyes are already shot.

Hit the jump to check out the covers, and click here for Part 1, here for Part 3, here for Part 4 and here for Part 5, along with all 25 covers in one image.  The film also stars Hugh Jackman, Peter Dinklage, Patrick Stewart, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, and Halle BerryX-Men: Days of Future Past opens in 3D on May 23rd.

Brief New Footage from X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST; First Look at Sentinels Might Be Released on Monday

It’s time for another round of “Teasers for Teasers” with X-Men: Days of Future Past, and it appears we’ll soon be getting our first official look at the Sentinels.  On his Twitter page, director Bryan Singer tweeted “Something BIG is coming Jan 27,” and it doesn’t get much bigger than the giant robots that are tasked with wiping out mutantkind.  Singer previously shared a set photo of a Sentinel, so we’re not in the dark as to their appearance, and hopefully we’ll now get to see them in action.  Additionally, the X-Men Instagram account says “A full day of #XMen surprises is just around the corner” so perhaps we’ll be seeing more than just Sentinels on Monday.

Hit the jump to see some new footage.  The film stars Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Patrick Stewart, Peter Dinklage, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, and Halle Berry.  X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in 3D on May 23rd.
