THE EXPENDABLES: DIRECTOR’S CUT Blu-ray Review

by     Posted: December 26th, 2011 at 6:00 am

When The Expendables dropped last year, many felt that—while Sylvester Stallone’s heart was in the right placed—the film failed to live up to expectations (there’s also a strong, vocal minority that love the film, and we should all just go ahead and assume now that they’re going to take issue with this statement).  Surprisingly enough, one of these people seems to be…Sylvester Stallone, who introduces the new Director’s Cut of The Expendables by saying, “I liked the theatrical version, but I love this (version)”.  Have improvements been made?  Is the film really and truly better?  And how can one tell, if one immediately forgot the first film almost as soon as they’d seen it?  Find out in my review of The Expendables: Director’s Cut, after the jump.

First Trailer and Official Synopsis for THE EXPENDABLES 2, Plus New Promo Poster

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for The Expendables 2, directed by Simon West (The Mechanic).  It’s a teaser that doesn’t get into plot, or even showcase any major action.  At this early stage, with over 9 months to go until the August 17 release, the film is selling itself entirely on the reputation of the cast: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Jean Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

If you are interested in the plot, the studio also unveiled the first official synopsis for The Expendables 2 along with a new promo poster.  See it all after the jump.

THE EXPENDABLES Blu-ray Review

Sylvester Stallone has had one of the strangest careers in cinema history. He’s had hit films for the last four decades. But he’s also had very public failures. The ups and downs are intense, as he made his way through being an action star to doing bad comedy to going direct to video, to his current resurgence (which came ten years after he tried to reinvent himself in Copland). Basically, he’s happy to coast and do garbage like Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot if the money’s good. But between Rambo and Rocky Balboa, Stallone was one the comeback trail, and with The Expendables, Stallone had his biggest hit in ages. By getting together such action stalwarts as Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lungren, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Eric Roberts, and Terry Crews, he had a multi-generational, multi-ethnic man on a mission movie. My review of The Expendables on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

THE EXPENDABLES Review

For a film that trades fantastical B-movie fun for deadly seriousness, The Expendables needs a reality check.  It thinks that the actors have on-screen chemistry.  They don’t.  It thinks that the script has plenty of witty banter.  It doesn’t.  It thinks that there’s thought-provoking pathos in the story.  There isn’t.  At best, The Expendables is misguided and at worst, it’s an over-confident mess that fumbles completely except for a few action beats.

THE EXPENDABLES “Call to Arms” Trailer

The Expendables latest trailer came out a few days ago so we’re a bit late posting this, but we pretty much had to because it’s amazing.  It will remind you why it is your duty as an action fan to see this movie.  This newest trailer is a call to arms for men to take back the box office in the name of “the only men they’re allowed to love.”  The Expendables, which was directed and co-written by star Sylvester Stallone, is opening on August 13th against the Julia Roberts drama Eat, Pray, Love, and like the trailer says, “if this movie loses to Eat, Pray, Love, you don’t deserve to be a man.”  I’m not even a man, and I almost feel like I won’t even deserve to live if I don’t see this movie.

THE EXPENDABLES Behind the Scenes “Hostages” Featurette

Lionsgate has released a new Behind the Scenes Featurette on the making of The Expendables.  The featurette is the first in a five-part series, with a new one premiering every Thursday from now till release.

This first one focuses on filming a hostage scene and the video has interviews with a lot of the crew and even Harry Knowles from AICN on set while they were filming.  What’s well done about the 4 minute clip is the way it mixes in behind the scenes footage with final movie footage (including a shot with a lot of blood!).  If you’re looking forward to The Expendables, this clip is only going to get you more excited.  Hit the jump to check it out.

2nd Trailer for THE EXPENDABLES Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, and Jet Li – UPDATED with New Poster

The new trailer for Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables has come online and it’s disappointing for two reasons.  First, it’s trying to trick people that Schwarzenegger and Willis are major characters in the film.  They’re not.  They’re cameos.  But they’re given billing above Jason Statham, Jet Li, and the rest of the cast who are in the entire movie.  I understand that the studio needs names to sell its pictures, but if this isn’t a bait-and-switch, then I don’t know what is.

Also, it plays like a teaser and shows almost no footage.  That’s bizarre seeing as the last trailer (which was all over the place) showed plenty of stuff from the film.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The Expendables hits theaters on August 13th. [There's also a new poster for the film that you can check out after the jump.  It's as bland as the trailer, but at least it doesn't include Schwarzenegger's name].

THE EXPENDABLES Sneak Peek Plus New Images

Lionsgate has released a few new images and a “sneak peek” from Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables.   Starring almost every action star on the planet, The Expendables gets released August 13 and I can’t wait.  I heard they did a test screening not too long ago here in Los Angeles that went over huge.  Apparently people were screaming in the theater and having a blast while watching it.  Based on the first trailer and the new sneak peek…I believe it.  Hit the jump to take a look:

THE EXPENDABLES Trailer

The trailer for Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables has come online and it’s not good.  It spoils the Schwarzenegger cameo (we knew he was in the film, but they didn’t have to show us his scene), every attempt it makes at humor falls flat, the part where it tries for soulful reflection is where the movie looks funny, and I think the picture has become clear that this is what happens when you make a movie based solely on servicing the fans of B-action pictures.  Oh, and when they do all the actors’ last names at the end of the trailer they leave out Terry Crews.  No one leaves out President Camacho.  Also, Stallone looks like hell and should really lay off the human growth hormone.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and the official synopsis.  The Expendables hits theaters on August 13th.

The Expenables movie poster showest standee slice.jpg

While walking through Showest tonight, I came across a brand new Expendables movie theater standee/poster for Sylvester Stallone’s new film.   Even though Showest ends tomorrow, it seems like they’re constantly putting out new posters.  Also, a new poster for The Expendables also hit the net today, so hit the jump to check everything out. The Expendables will be released by Lionsgate on August 13, 2010.

Reader Review from Last Night’s Test Screening for Sylvester Stallone’s THE EXPENDABLES

by     Posted: February 10th, 2010 at 1:28 pm

slice_expendables_01.jpg

Last night was the first test screening of Sylvester Stallone’s 80s-action-movie throwback, The Expendables and reader reviews have started to hit the net.  Collider reader “TexMexes” was good enough to send us his thought on the film and we’ve included it in full after the jump.  It’s a highly positive review of the film but just as a standard disclaimer, studios do send out planted reviews so just keep that caveat in the back of your mind when you read this.  Also, this was just a test screening so things can and will change between now and the film’s August 13th release date.

Additionally, AICN has also landed a couple of reader reviews.  One that’s lukewarm on the film and another one that’s positive.  We’ve pulled some quotes from those reviews as well so you can check out those after the jump as well.

Finally, there was also a test screening of MacGruber last night so if any readers who saw it would like to throw us their thoughts on the film, just shoot us an e-mail at frosty@ collider.com and matt@ collider.com.

First WARLORDS Trailer Starring Andy Lau, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Jet Li

Warlords poster slice.jpg

The first trailer for the Chinese epic Warlords has just hit the Internet, and judging from the short glimpse we get here, this one should deliver solid action and intrigue on a truly grand scale when it comes out April 22.

The movie stars three titans of Asian action cinema. Jet Li needs no introduction to Western audiences, and he’s joined in The Warlords by Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro, who squared off in House of Flying Daggers. Lau also played inspector Lau Kin Ming in the Infernal Affairs trilogy, which inspired Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning The Departed, and Kaneshiro stars in John Woo’s upcoming historical epic Red Cliff.   Hit the jump for the full synopsis and the trailer:

New Posters for THE LAST SONG Starring Miley Cyrus and WARLORDS Starring Jet Li

Warlords and The Last Song movie posters slice.jpg

New posters for The Last Song starring Miley Cyrus and Warlords starring Jet Li have been released and you can check them out after the jump – along with the synopses.  Both posters are typical for the genre they’re in…the Miley Cyrus poster looks like any Nicholas Sparks movie, and the Jet Li movie sells the action.

Before hitting the jump, I should mention half the reason I wanted to do this poster article is to put Miley Cyrus with Jet Li.

THE EXPENDABLES Update – Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger Filmed Together Earlier Today

by     Posted: October 24th, 2009 at 4:33 pm

slice_schwarzenegger_stallone_willis_01.jpg

Earlier today, while most of us were trying to enjoy our Saturday, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger filmed a scene together for “The Expendables”. If you’re a fan of action movies, this is like Christmas morning. While the scene in question is just a small part of the movie…who cares! These three action stars have never worked together and even if it’s just for a moment in the movie, this is another reason why “The Expendables” is going to be awesome. More after the jump.
