First Reviews for ZERO DARK THIRTY Heap Praise on Kathryn Bigelow’s Intense Procedural and Jessica Chastain’s Lead Performance; Plus First TV Spot

by     Posted 1 year, 145 days ago

2012 is likely to go down in history as a banner year for film, and with nearly a month left to go before year’s end there are still a number of highly anticipated films poised to hit theaters.  High on that list is The Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow’s drama about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, Zero Dark Thirty, and the pic finally debuted to critics yesterday to an incredibly positive reaction.  The production has been shrouded in a thick veil of secrecy given the sensitive subject matter, but many have high hopes for the film’s awards chances since the pic reteams Best Director winner Bigelow with her Oscar-winning Hurt Locker scribe Mark Boal.

It appears that those early guesstimates were entirely founded, as critics had plenty of high praise for the procedural thriller following its debut screenings yesterday.  Hit the jump to read some of the noteworthy reactions and to watch the first TV spot for the film.

A batch of new images from director Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming drama Zero Dark Thirty has been released online.  The film documents the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden, culminating in the now-famous SEAL Team Six operation.  We only recently became aware that Jessica Chastain plays the lead in the film, a CIA operative spearheading the manhunt, and these new images feature the actress front and center.  We also get a look at Kyle Chandler, who I believe plays Chastain’s superior at the CIA.  It’s like Homeland, but with considerably less crazy.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film also stars Chris Pratt, Mark Strong, Scott Adkins, Joel Edgerton, and James GandolfiniZero Dark Thirty opens in limited release on December 19th, then expands nationwide on January 11th.

Composer Alexandre Desplat Talks Scoring Kathryn Bigelow’s ZERO DARK THIRTY; Says the Film Is Like a Japanese Kurosawa Movie

by     Posted 1 year, 162 days ago

As we move closer to awards season, one of the more interesting films coming up is director Kathryn Bigelow’s drama Zero Dark Thirty.  The film documents the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden, culminating in the now-famous SEAL Team Six operation.  The production has been shrouded in a massive veil of secrecy given the sensitive subject matter, but it’s expected to be a major awards player given that it serves as Bigelow’s follow-up to her Best Picture-winning The Hurt Locker.

Steve recently spoke with the incredibly talented (and prolific) composer Alexandre Desplat about his work on the upcoming DreamWorks Animation film Rise of the Guardians (you can click here for Steve’s thoughts on the movie), and Desplat took a moment to talk about his unique score for Zero Dark Thirty and what he thought of the film.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Awards News: STAND UP GUYS Gets Oscar-Qualifying Run; Wide Release of ZERO DARK THIRTY May Be Pushed to January

by     Posted 1 year, 178 days ago

Oscar season must be getting closer, as couple of interesting awards-related stories have surfaced today.  First up, Lionsgate’s comedy Stand Up Guys is getting an awards-qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles on December 14th, per THR.  The film stars Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin as retired gangsters who reunite for one last epic night where, naturally, everything goes to hell.  I’m not sure how strong the chances are of generating a nomination or two for some of the cast, but it can’t hurt for Lionsgate to try.  The pic opens wide on January 11th.

Additionally, it looks like Sony may be rethinking their release strategy with the highly anticipated “kill Bin Laden” drama Zero Dark Thirty.  Hit the jump for more.

New Trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s ZERO DARK THIRTY

by     Posted 1 year, 191 days ago

A new trailer for director Kathryn Bigelow’s (The Hurt Locker) thriller Zero Dark Thirty has been released.  The film documents the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden, culminating in the now-famous SEAL Team Six operation.  The new cut is heads above the first trailer, in which a war room speech presided over the trailer with scenes of covert operations taking place.  This time around, we actually see the words being spoken in the war room as well as the soldiers in the thick of it, with their boots on the ground.  And the sense of tension here is much more palpable, as it should be.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film stars Jessica Chastain, Chris Pratt, Mark Strong, Scott Adkins, Joel Edgerton, James Gandolfini, and Kyle ChandlerZero Dark Thirty opens on December 19th.

James Gandolfini’s Secret Role in ZERO DARK THIRTY Revealed

by     Posted 1 year, 191 days ago

Director Kathryn Bigelow’s long-awaited follow-up to her Oscar-winning drama The Hurt Locker finally comes to us later this year in the form of Zero Dark Thirty.  The film documents the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden, culminating in the Navy’s now-famous SEAL Team Six operation.  Given the touchy subject matter, the production was shrouded in secrecy.  The full cast wasn’t confirmed for months and those filming scenes abroad had to do so without revealing where or when they would be shooting.

With the recent release of the teaser trailer and a fairly long, revealing interview with Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal covering the film’s more controversial aspects, we figured all the pic’s secrets had been unveiled.  Not so, as just yesterday it was announced that James Gandolfini has a top-secret role in the film as current Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.  Hit the jump for more.

Kathryn Bigelow and Screenwriter Mark Boal Talk ZERO DARK THIRTY Controversy, Protecting Sources, Story Details and More

by     Posted 1 year, 257 days ago

Director Kathryn Bigelow’s drama about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, Zero Dark Thirty, has had an utterly fascinating history and promises some heated discussion in the months leading up to its release.  The Oscar-winning director was already working on the project with her The Hurt Locker scribe Mark Boal when bin Laden was killed on May 2nd, 2011 by the U.S. Navy’s SEAL Team Six.  The two then began reworking the script to reflect these real-life events, and while the film’s production was kept under a veil of secrecy, we recently got our first look at the pic’s teaser trailer.  The December release comes under quite a bit of controversy, as U.S. Representative Peter King and the republican group Judicial Watch have questioned whether President Obama’s administration shared confidential details about the mission with Bigelow’s production.

Bigelow and Boal have now finally spoken up about the project, addressing the political controversy, the reworking of the script, and just what exactly Zero Dark Thirty entails.  Hit the jump to see what they had to say.

First Teaser Trailer and Images for Kathryn Bigelow’s ZERO DARK THIRTY

by     Posted 1 year, 257 days ago

A new teaser trailer and images from The Hurt Locker-director Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty have gone online. The military drama looks to tell the story behind the story of Osama bin Laden’s death on May 2, 2011 during an operation by the Navy’s SEAL Team Six.  The trailer hints at a more intimate breakdown of the events leading up to bin Laden’s death rather than making it a more distant political thriller.

Zero Dark Thirty, written by Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) and starring Chris Pratt, Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong, Scott Adkins, Joel Edgerton and Kyle Chandler opens December 19th.  Hit the jump to see the teaser trailer and images, and click here to read what Bigelow and Boal have to say about the film’s controversy, history, and characters.

Kathryn Bigelow’s Hunt for Bin Laden Drama Gets Working Title ZERO DARK THIRTY; Production in India Draws Protests

by     Posted 2 years, 49 days ago

One of the more interesting projects set to be released this year is director Kathryn Bigelow’s heretofore-untitled follow-up to her Best Picture and Best Director winning 2008 film The Hurt Locker. The new project centers on the Navy SEAL team who hunted down and killed Osama Bin Laden, and now Deadline reports that the pic has a working title of Zero Dark Thirty. The title is a military term for a very early starting time, so we’ll presumably be seeing some sleepy SEALs. The stellar ensemble cast includes Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Chris Pratt, Kyle Chanler, Harold Perrineau, Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong, and Edgar Ramirez, and production recently began in India. However, they didn’t exactly get off to a smooth start. Hit the jump for news concerning the production’s less-than-warm welcome in India.

Kyle Chandler Joins Kathryn Bigelow’s Untitled Hunt for Osama Bin Laden Drama

by     Posted 2 years, 63 days ago

It appears that life post-Friday Night Lights is treating Emmy Award-winning actor Kyle Chandler well. He recently wrapped Ben Affleck’s 1970s hostage film Argo, he’s set to star opposite Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg in the political thriller Broken City, and now he’s poised to join Kathryn Bigelow’s follow-up to her Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker. Deadline reports that Chandler has joined the fantastic ensemble for Bigelow’s untitled drama (formerly Kill Bin Laden) about the Navy SEAL team who hunted down and killed Osama Bin Laden. Chandler will be playing a CIA agent in the pic, which boasts an impressive cast that includes Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, Chris Pratt, Jessica Chastain, Mark Strong, and Edgar Ramirez.

Production on the Mark Boal-scripted untitled drama should be getting underway soon, as the pic is set for release this December. The film was already in development before the assassination of Bin Laden, and Bigelow and Boal quickly reworked the ending of the script to reflect the real life event. The two have been hard at work on the project for a while now, and I’m eager to see what the full story entails. In addition to this film, Chandler also has the possible Friday Night Lights movie on the horizon.
