Mark Millar Talks KICK-ASS 2, His Role at 20th Century Fox, Future Projects, and More

by     Posted 1 year, 145 days ago

While at Comic-Con last weekend, I sat down with Mark Millar for an exclusive video interview.  We talked about what he’s most excited for fans to see in Kick-Ass 2 (with a special nod to each of the film’s lead actors), seeing Mindy (Chloë Grace Moretz) dealing with high school drama as an outsider, how long it took to get the sequel made, leaving Marvel, his role at 20th Century Fox and how the studio is building up towards something big—Millar says that Fox has 5-10 “gold franchises” with their comic properties, especially the X-Men and the related universe.  Hit the jump to watch.

There were so many panels in Hall H last week that we had to break them up into smaller articles to bring them all to you.  In this batch, you can check out the panels for The World’s End, Kick-Ass 2, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, and Riddick.  The footage we were shown from Kick-Ass 2 and Riddick was immediately released by Universal following the panel, so you can check that out, and basically recreate the panel experience without the waiting-in-line-for-six-hours part.  If I had been waiting in line that long solely for those two panels, I would be so pissed.  For everyone else, enjoy!  As a side note, the most entertaining of these panels is The World’s End especially when Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost encounter “Button Lady”.

Hit the jump to check out the panels for The World’s End, Kick-Ass 2, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, and Riddick, and click on the corresponding links for our recaps, which includes our thoughts on the footage we were shown.  Click here to see all of the TV panels, and click here to see the panels for X-Men: Days of Future Past, RoboCop, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Godzilla.

Comic-Con: KICK-ASS 2 Panel Recap Plus New Red-Band Trailer; Jeff Wadlow and His Cast Tease a Darker Tone, Evolved Characters, and Brutal Fights

by     Posted 1 year, 154 days ago

Director Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of the comic Kick-Ass was pleasant surprise when it first opened in theaters, and now director Jeff Wadlow takes the helm of the incredibly R-rated sequel Kick-Ass 2. Again based on the comics by Mark Millar, the follow-up picks up with Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kick Ass and Chloë Grace Moretz’s Hit Girl years after the first film, as they must once again team up to take on Christopher Mintz-Plasse’s supervillain The Motherfucker and his team of badass antagonists. A new trailer for the pic has been unveiled, and at the Comic-Con panel for the film earlier today, Wadlow and his cast teased jam-packed arcs for all of the principal characters, a considerably dark tone, brutal fight sequences, new cast additions, and much more.

New Poster for KICK-ASS 2 and Comic-Con Posters for 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE

by     Posted 1 year, 158 days ago

New posters have been released for Kick-Ass 2 and 300: Rise of an Empire.  The new Kick-Ass 2 poster continues the trend of just providing close-ups on the lead characters, although on this poster, the photoshop effects have smoothed out of Hit Girl’s’ face to an unsettling degree.  As for the 300: Rise of an Empire poster, it’s for Comic-Con and will presumably be given out at Legendary’s booth on the exhibition hall floor.  The poster proclaims, “Fear us!” to which I can only respond, “No.  I’m not afraid of the tragedy-mask-on-steroids.”

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  Kick-Ass 2 opens August 16th and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Jim Carrey300: Rise of an Empire opens in 3D on March 7, 2014, and stars Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey, and Rodrigo Santoro. [Update: We've added a Lena Headey 300 poster after the jump as well.]

Christopher Mintz-Plasse Is The Mother F%&*^r in New KICK-ASS 2 Image; First Look at Anthony Hopkins in SOLACE

by     Posted 1 year, 162 days ago

Universal Pictures has released a new image from director Jeff Wadlow’s upcoming sequel Kick-Ass 2, and this time it’s all about The Mother F%&*^r.  Christopher Mintz-Plasse is seen checking out his new look as the aptly-named supervillain, sporting an outfit that is at once sinister and sexually suggestive.  The film’s red-band trailers promise that Wadlow isn’t holding back for the R-rated follow-up, and I’m eager to see more of the character interplay between Mintz-Plasse, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Chloe Grace Moretz.  The film opens in theaters on August 16th.

Additionally, the first image from the supernatural thriller Solace has been unveiled.  The film centers on a former doctor with psychic abilities who gets roped in by the FBI to aid in a serial killer case.  Anthony Hopkins plays the doctor, while Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Abbie Cornish are FBI agents working to track down the killer, played by Colin Farrell.  Filming is set to wrap on the film this week.  Hit the jump to check out both images.

Comic-Con 2013 Schedule for Friday, July 19th Includes THE WORLD’S END, THE WALKING DEAD, ROBOCOP, GAME OF THRONES, & SPIDER-MAN 2

by     Posted 1 year, 168 days ago

Yesterday we got a look at the rather tame Comic-Con 2013 schedule for Wednesday’s Preview Night and Thursday, and today SDCC has unveiled the full panel lineup for Friday, July 19th.  Last year was the first year that Comic-Con moved TV panels into Hall H for days other than Sunday, and after getting a look at Friday’s lineup, the Con is starting to look more and more like a TV convention.  While there are first-looks at The World’s End, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Kick-Ass 2, and Riddick to look forward to, the entire convention is packed with TV panels on Friday, including Hall H panels for The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and the Veronica Mars movie.

I’m baffled by the fact that the panel for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Joss Whedon is being held in Ballroom 20 and not Hall H, and at the same time as the Walking Dead panel no less.  Hit the jump to take a look at the highlights from Friday’s schedule.  Comic-Con 2013 runs from July 18th – July 21st.

TOP 5: WHITE HOUSE DOWN, THE CONJURING Set Visit, THE HEAT, Jim Carrey Declines to Promote KICK-ASS 2, 2013 Saturn Awards Interviews

by     Posted 1 year, 174 days ago

Well said, Matt Goldberg. In the opening sentences of his review of The Heat (linked after the jump), our Managing Editor/resident film reviewer dropped some serious truth regarding female lead films, their often unfair characterization as “the female [insert hit movie here]“, and how ridiculous it is that it has taken this long to get our better halves at the forefront of a genre that has been around for years. I say this not because I feel like Matt needs my approval and/or defense, but because it’s thoughtful writing like this that makes me both a proud contributor and eternal fan of the site.

All high-fiving aside, this week’s Top 5 includes White House Down interviews with Jamie Foxx, Channing Tatum, and more, Dave’s The Conjuring set visit recap, The Heat interviews with Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy, and director Paul Feig, Jim Carrey‘s announcement that he won’t be promoting Kick-Ass 2, and interviews from the 2013 Saturn Awards red carpet with the likes of Joss Whedon and Shane Black. A brief recap and link to each makes its home after the jump.

New Poster KICK-ASS 2; Jim Carrey Declines to Promote the Film Because of Sandy Hook Shootings

by     Posted 1 year, 179 days ago

Lionsgate has released a new poster for Kick-Ass 2, but the bigger news is that Jim Carrey has decided not to promote the film because “in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence.”  Carrey explained in his tweet that he did the film one month before the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  He followed this up with a second tweet saying, “my apologies to others involve with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”  I respect Carrey for sticking to his beliefs.  Three months after the shooting, Carrey released a video on Funny or Die mocking gun owners, and if he had done press for Kick-Ass 2, the question would have come up about why he condemned guns but was out promoting a film where characters, including his own, use them.  Personally, I believe movies aren’t the reason for gun violence; lack of gun control is the reason for gun violence (it’s why countries that have gun control have far fewer gun deaths per capita even though they consume the same media as us).  Carrey typically doesn’t do action movies, so this move probably won’t hurt his career, but I’m glad that he’s mindful enough to realize that he can’t promote a film that may not celebrate gun violence, but still features it in an entertainment capacity.

Hit the jump to check out the poster as well as a response to Carrey’s comments from Kick-Ass 2 author Mark Millar.  The film opens on August 16th.

New KICK-ASS 2 Trailer Tries to Have Fun … Otherwise, What’s the Point?

by     Posted 1 year, 186 days ago

The new Kick-Ass 2 trailer is now available.  It features an extended look at both the continuing training regime for Kick-Ass (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Hit-Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) and more new heroes on the block.  The new cut also shows off the evil side of the mask with The Mother Fucker (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) putting together his own posse.  The best thing about this trailer for Jeff Wadlow’s sequel isn’t Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes or even the fact that his German Shepherd gets in on the action; it’s the tone, one that reminds us that comicbook movies are still allowed to be fun.

Kick-Ass 2, also starring Clark DukeDonald FaisonJohn Leguizamo, and Olga Kurkulina, opens August 16th.  Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.
