Karl Urban Is the Law in New Clip from DREDD 3D

A new clip from the upcoming Judge Dredd reboot Dredd 3D has gone online.  Though the clip is short, it should pique fan interest given that it showcases star Karl Urban uttering the character’s signature line.  I caught the film at Comic-Con and thought it was fairly entertaining, but I was in the minority since most everyone else really loved it.  Director Pete Travis utilizes an effect to showcase the effects of the drug “Slo-Mo” in which we watch the action play at 4000 frames-per-second, and this makes the film’s seriously brutal violence even more intense.  The plot’s a bit reminiscent of The Raid, but I assume die-hard fans of the comic will be big fans of this adaptation regardless.

60-Second TV Spot for DREDD 3D; New Featurette Looks at “Slo-Mo”

Lionsgate has released a new 60-second TV spot for Dredd 3D, a new adaptation of the Judge Dredd comics.  The TV-spot basically plays like an abbreviated trailer, and since it’s not red-band, it can’t show one of the film’s distinctive features, which is the hard-R gore.  There are some brutal kills in Dredd, and I suppose it’s a good thing that they haven’t been spoiled.  The studio has also released a new featurette high-lighting the drug “Slo-Mo” which is taking over Mega City One.  The drug makes the user feel like everything is moving at 1% its normal speed, and it’s neat to see the visuals play at 4000-frames per second.  I’m particularly grateful that director Pete Travis didn’t overuse the effect.

Hit the jump to check out the TV spot and the featurette.  The film will play at the Toronto International Film Festival and Fantastic Fest before opening nationwide on September 21st.  You can click here to read my review.

DREDD 3D Unveils First TV Spot and New Viral Site

It’s exactly one month until Dredd 3D blasts onto screens, so now seems like a good time to roll out their first TV spot and a new viral site.  The thirty-second spot does a decent job at summing up the trailer while establishing the tone of the picture and giving you a listen to Karl Urban’s affected Judge voice. The viral site, called “Dredd Report,” is a decent satire of the “Drudge Report,” but as far as marketing goes, it’s not all that appealing.  There are a host of real-life links to news stories on legitimate sites, which makes it difficult to hunt down the movie-related content.

Also starring Lena Headey and Olivia Thirlby, director Pete Travis’ Dredd 3D opens in theaters on September 21st.  Hit the jump to watch the TV spot and for links to the viral site.

Olivia Thirlby Talks Playing a Bad Ass in DREDD, Comic-Con and Her Other Projects, Including NOBODY WALKS, RED KNOT and THE MOVIE

by     Posted: July 27th, 2012 at 3:30 pm

At this year’s Comic-Con, I was able to sit down with Olivia Thirlby for an extended video interview.  Urban was at the Con to promote his upcoming hard-R adaptation of the comic book series Judge Dredd.  For those unfamiliar with the film, Dredd is an adaption of the 2000AD comics character Judge Dredd, and it stars Karl Urban, Thirlby, and Lena Headey.  The film follows Dredd and rookie Judge Cassandra Anderson (Thirlby) fighting through a tower that’s crawling with thugs in their attempt to bring down drug overlord Ma-ma (Headey).  I actually got to see the film at Comic-Con and it’s great.

During my interview with Thirlby we talked about the R rating, how she got involved in the project, deleted scenes, how Urban never takes off his helmet, the drug slow-mo, what it was like playing a bad ass girl, and a lot more.  In addition, we also talked about Bored to Death, Red Knot, Nobody Walks, and more.  Hit the jump for what she had to say.

13 New Images from DREDD

Fourteen new images from Dredd have gone online.  The hard-R adaptation of the comic book series has Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) and rookie Judge Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) fighting through a tower crawling with thugs in their attempt to bring down drug overlord Ma-ma (Lena Headey).  I thought the film was a passable action-thriller, but some of my trusted peers enjoyed it more than I did.  Among these new images, one could be considered a spoiler, but it’s nothing too major.  If you’re eager to get a better sense of the film’s visual style and see the lead characters in action, then these images are worth your time.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  Dredd opens in 3D on September 21st.

Before the 2012 Emmy Nominations are officially announced (July 19th), I wanted to jump in and highlight some of what I believe to be some of the best underrated performances on television this year.  Putting aside some of the perennial winners, the following discussion for each of the major categories is likely to mention plenty of names who won’t get Emmy mentions this year, but certainly should (and others who may get a nod, but likely won’t win).  Hit the jump for the (spoiler-free!) list that is not meant to be exhaustive (after all, I do watch an unhealthy amount of TV but I’m not caught up on everything), but hopefully brings at least a few of those dark horses to light with the recognition they deserve.

DREDD Review

review-dredd_movie_image_karl_urban_slice_01

Grit, for lack of a better word, is good.  This at least seems to be the prevailing wisdom when it comes to action movies.  But is gritty good enough?  Pete TravisDredd seems to think so.  The director has designed a down-and-dirty future where nothing shines, everything is grimy, and life is cheap.  Into this world he throws a memorable albeit simple protagonist whose very voice emanates ugly violence and wholesale slaughter.  Dredd swings between a single-minded drive to use your adrenal gland like a chew toy and a one-dimensional ploy to play into a shallow bloodlust.  What it lacks in claustrophobia, a compelling plot, dangerous stakes, and a compelling antagonist, it makes up for with loud noises, blown-apart bodies, and a killer performance from Karl Urban.

First Trailer for DREDD Starring Karl Urban

The first trailer for Pete TravisDredd has gone online.  I know filming was already well underway (if not wrapped) by the time The Raid came out, but thems the breaks.  The trailer does a good job of setting up the conflict, and while there’s the inevitable speed-ramping, at least there’s a plot point to explain it (the drug called Slo-Mo, which is what I think Zack Snyder takes every morning).  I’m not sure if this trailer is enough to get naysayers past the 1995 Sylvester Stallone flop, I’m still excited to see Karl Urban as the eponymous judge/jury/executioner.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Olivia Thirlby and Lena HeadeyDredd opens in 3D on September 21st.

Tease for the DREDD Teaser Trailer

The first trailer for Dredd is set to arrive tomorrow, but a 10-second tease has gone online.  What can we learn from ten seconds?  Pretty much nothing other than this action movie will have lots of action, and that Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) was negotiating, but negotiations are over.  I’m eager to see the longer trailer, but I was already eager before seeing an ad for an ad.

Hit the jump to check out the teaser trailer tease.  The film also stars Olivia Thirlby and Lena HeadeyDredd opens in 3D on September 21st.

New Image of Lena Headey in DREDD; Actress Compares Her Character to a Great White Shark

A new image from director Pete Travis’ reboot Dredd has gone online.  Karl Urban stars as the titular Judge Dredd in this redo of the comic book character that was infamously inhabited by Sylvester Stallone in 1995’s Judge Dredd.  This image highlights the character played by Lena Headey, who’s currently starring as the nefarious Cersei Lannister on HBO’s Game of Thrones.  Along with the image, we’ve also got some quotes from Headey about her character in Dredd and how she fits into the Judge Dredd universe.  Hit the jump for more.

Three lovely British actresses, Emily Watson, Anna Friel, and Lena Headey have signed on to star in The PoisonersTHR describes The Poisoners as “a dark comedy about women left behind in an English farming community during World War I who become involved with several German prisoners-of-war.”  I am intrigued by the logline—or really anything that can be pitched as a dark war comedy—especially with such a winning cast.  Ken Duken, Hanno Koffler, and Alexander Scheer co-star, presumably as the German POWs.  Jon Amiel (Creation) will direct from a script by Paul BillingJeanna Polley is producing through her aptly named company The Producers.  Filming begins this summer in Ireland in Germany.
