He rescued his daughter from human traffickers in Taken, took on a wolf with broken bottles taped to his knuckles in The Grey and now Liam Neeson is off to play an air marshal responsible for rescuing an airplane full of innocent people from an anonymous terrorist threatening to kill a passenger every 20 minutes.  Is it the woman (Julianne Moore) next to him who makes a stink about having the window seat?  Is it the other air marshal (Anson Mount) aboard?  What about the hothead (Corey Stoll) in coach?  Or perhaps have his own demons just caught up to him and warped his perspective?

With the answer coming our way when Non-Stop hits theaters this weekend, Neeson and Moore took the time to sit down with the New York press contingent to discuss personal in-flight memories, close quarter fight techniques, what to expect if you decide to approach Neeson in an airport with a Star Wars photo to sign, and more.  Catch our full press conference coverage after the jump.

NON-STOP Review

non-stop-liam-neeson-slice

Non-Stop manages the difficult task of being a solid thriller as well as constantly silly, and the result is a film that was far more entertaining than I expected it to be.  Director Jaume Collet-Serra‘s previously filmography has been underwhelming to say the least, and his previous collaboration with star Liam Neeson, the thriller Unknown, was awful.  But paired with a solid script from John W. Richardson, Christopher Roach, and Ryan Engle, Collet-Serra keeps the story moving, the whodunit a constant question, and utilizes Neeson’s performance to ground the picture so that our eye-rolls don’t do a complete 360.

Liam Neeson’s been taken with the idea of Taken 3 for quite some time, but now he’s saying that no one will actually be taken.  Follow that?  Neeson will return for a third installment in the Bryan Mills’ skills saga (for a reported $20 million paycheck) which saw him rescue his kidnapped daughter in Pierre Morel’s 2008 original, only to be taken himself in Olivier Megaton’s 2012 follow-up.  Megaton will also return to helm Taken 3, but a new report quotes Neeson himself saying “nobody gets taken.”  Hit the jump for more.

TOP 5: Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons Join BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN, NEIGHBORS, THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, INTERSTELLAR, A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST

With an Oscar nod for Best Documentary under its belt and Matt having named it his favorite film of 2013, the last thing Joshua Oppenheimer‘s The Act of Killing needs is an endorsement from me. And yet, here it is. I watched the film on Netflix several weeks ago and, to be honest, I’m still having trouble coming to grips with it. It’s the most the surreal and disturbing look at human atrocity I’ve seen and the more I think about its subjects and overall approach, the more I’m in awe of the fact that it exists. I drown in hyperbole when thinking of words to describe it because it’s so profound that calling it a “good film” seems not like an understatement but a complete inaccuracy. The Act of Killing is not a “good film”, it’s a stunning work of humanity that makes awards, critical reception, the sentence I’m typing at this very moment, etc., seem absolutely trivial.

Speaking of trivial, in what may go down as one of the worst segues in Collider history, I’ll now attempt to jump into this week’s Top 5. Highlighted today is Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons joining Zack Snyder‘s Batman vs. Superman, Steve’s Neighbors set visit coverage, the first trailer for The Fault in Our Stars, Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar being exempt from Paramount’s digital mandate, and the first trailer for Seth MacFarlane‘s A Million Ways to Die in the West. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

The first clip from director Jaume Collet-Serra‘s new thriller Non-Stop is now online.  The film takes place on a transatlantic flight where a U.S. Air Marshal (Liam Neeson) must stop a mysterious hijacker who is threatening to kill a passenger every 20 minutes unless his ransom demand is met.  The action hasn’t quite jumped up to that level in this first clip, but it will make you think twice about complaining about cramped seating or a shortage or airplane peanuts.

The film also stars Julianne Moore, Corey Stoll, Michelle Dockery, Scoot McNairy, Lupita Nyong’O, Bar Paly, and Anson Mount.  Non-Stop opens February 28, 2014.  Hit the jump to watch the new clip.

Liam Neeson to Reteam with Martin Scorsese for SILENCE

Though Liam Neeson has definitely been finding success as an action star recently since his grizzled turn in Taken, he plans on returning to his dramatic roots in the near future.  Deadline reports that Neeson has joined the cast of Martin Scorsese’s next film Silence, reuniting the actor with his Gangs of New York director.  Silence has been a passion project of Scorsese’s for decades, and his adaptation of the Shusaku Endo novel is finally poised to get in front of cameras this summer.  The story revolves around two 17th-century Jesuit priests who travel to Japan to investigate claims of religious persecution, and the material sees Scorsese returning to a theme that he has explored countless times throughout his career: faith.

Andrew Garfield is onboard to play one of the priests, with Girls star Adam Driver reportedly signed on to play the otherKen Watanabe is also part of the cast, which will be mostly made up of Japanese actors.  Production will get underway in Taiwan this summer.  Neeson has a number of genre-oriented films hitting theaters this year, including The LEGO Movie, A Million Ways to Die in the West, and Non-Stop.

Universal Pictures has released the first red-band trailer for Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s latest directorial feature A Million Ways to Die in the West.  It’s also MacFarlane’s live-action acting debut, and judging from this first look, he’s actually a bit more reserved than his animated counterparts.  The dangers of the wild west more than make up for MacFarlane’s toned-down performance as it looks like the film will live up to its title; just about anything and everything in this world can and will kill you in the most hilarious way possible.

Even though Taken 2 was a step down from Taken in terms of quality, it blew past the original when it came to the box office by raking in $376 million worldwide.  Naturally, the saga of Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) dealing with kidnappings must continue, and Deadline is reporting that Taken 2 director Olivier Megaton will return to helm Taken 3Maggie Grace will also come back, and once again, Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen are handling the script, which will likely involve Neesons beating the shit out of people.

Deadline also reports that Forest Whitaker is in talks to join Neeson and Grace in the upcoming sequel. No word yet on whether or not Whitaker will A) be kidnapped; B) the kidnapper; C) have a very special set of skills; D) Find a better way to determine distance than by tossing grenades into a highly populated city.

Universal has released eight posters for Seth MacFarlane‘s upcoming western-comedy, A Million Ways to Die in the West.  The story revolves around a cowardly farmer (MacFarlane) who backs out of a gunfight and subsequently loses his girlfriend.  When he later meets the wife of a notorious outlaw who teaches him how to shoot, he gets an opportunity to win his pride back, but must choose between reclaiming an old love or kindling a new one.  The plot thickens when the outlaw returns to claim his woman.  We have yet to see a trailer for the film, but these posters give us a slight indication of each character’s personality, and each seems to be a play on a western archetype.  Hopefully, we’ll get a trailer soon so we’ll have a better idea of what MacFarlane is going for.

Watch 9 Clips from Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s THE LEGO MOVIE Featuring the Voices of Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman and More

With directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller helming The Lego Movie, I was confident the animated film was going to be something special.  But I will fully admit, the film exceeded my lofty expectations.  Loaded with great animation, a fun story, humor for both kids and adults, and an insanely addictive song (Everything is Awesome) that you’ll be singing again and again, The Lego Movie is truly something special and I’m beyond confident both audiences and critics are going to fall in love with the film.  If you’re not familiar with the movie, it’s been made using a mix of stop-motion and CG animation, and the pic revolves around Emmett (voiced by Chris Pratt), an ordinary construction worker who finds himself anointed “The Special”, a master builder who will lead a band of rebels to save the world from the evil President Business (Will Ferrell).  The film also features the voices of Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Charlie Day, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Alison Brie, and many others.

With the film hitting theaters on February 7th, Warner Bros. has provided us with nine clips.  Hit the jump to check them out.  You can also click here for all our previous Lego Movie coverage which includes posters, images, trailers, and more.
