Ahead of the film’s Comic-Con panel this coming Saturday, Warner Bros. has released the first The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies for director Peter Jackson’s concluding installment in his Hobbit trilogy.  This poster officially bills the film as “The Defining Chapter”, as the title tells us we’ll be privy to a pivotal battle that sets the Middle-earth stage for the events of The Lord of the Rings saga.  Though I’ve been a bit disappointed with the Hobbit films themselves, there’s no denying that this debut Battle of the Five Armies poster is pretty swell.  It depicts a fiery standoff between the nefarious dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) and Luke Evans’ Bard the Bowman, and things do not look to be going great in Lake-Town.

Hit the jump to check out the first The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies poster in all its glory, and come back to Collider on Saturday for our full Comic-Con panel recap.  The film opens in theaters on December 17th.

Warner Bros. has released a new The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies image ahead of the film’s big presentation at Comic-Con next week.  In the conclusion to the trilogy, Smaug and an army of Orcs descend on the Lonely Mountain, and elves, men, and dwarves must unite to save Middle-earth.  Since Smaug and the orcs are all CGI, this image focuses on the flesh-and-blood characters of Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Bard (Luke Evans) whose stunned faces are presumably looking at things that are still in post-production.

Hit the jump to check out the image.  The film also stars Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Graham McTavish, Michael Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Ken Stott, and Aidan Turner.  The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opens in 2D, 3D, HFR 3D, and IMAX 3D on December 17th.

Luke Evans is a pretty popular guy now and has been in loads of blockbusters including The Hobbit and Fast & Furious 6, but Dracula Untold marks his very first go at playing the title character in a grand scale studio film.  He leads Gary Shore’s first feature as Vlad, a character based on Vlad the Impaler.  When Mehmet (Dominic Cooper) threatens to take 1,000 boys from Transylvania including Vlad’s son, Vlad makes a desperate play to save them; he becomes a vampire.

During our visit to set, Evans took a break from shooting a scene in the Great Hall to talk to us about his initial reaction to getting the offer to play Dracula and then the months of work he put into it thereafter.  Hit the jump for more on Vlad’s mission to save his family and the people of Transylvania, all of the powers he gains after becoming Dracula, what it takes for him to manage Vlad’s enormous character arc and more.

We may have seen our fair share of Dracula movies, but on October 17th, we’re getting a brand new spin on the legend in Gary Shore’s Dracula Untold.  Luke Evans leads as Vlad.  At the start, all is well in Transylvania, but then Mehmet II (Dominic Cooper) and his troops move in and demand that the Transylvanians give up 1,000 boys for their army, including Vlad’s own son, Ingeras (Art Parkinson).  In an effort to save them all, Vlad resorts to desperate measures  – he becomes a vampire.

To go along with our visit to the film’s Belfast, Ireland set, Universal has unveiled two new official stills from the film and two behind the scenes shots.  We’ve got Shore and Evans working on a scene in The Great Hall, an image of Vlad embracing his son and more.  Hit the jump to take a look at all the new Dracula Untold images and be sure to catch our set visit and interviews with Evans, Cooper and Sarah Gadon as well.

DRACULA UNTOLD Trailer: Luke Evans Stars in the Origin Story of the World’s Most Famous Vampire

Universal has released the first Dracula Untold trailer.  The movie tells the origins of the man who would become the infamous vampire.  This trailer goes beyond the scant logline, and explains that Dracula started out as a good guy, but in order to protect his family, he had to become the bloodsucking bad guy we all know today.  It looks more interesting than I thought it would be, and I really like the costumes.  At the very least, there seems to be some potential for a good story rather than just pretty visual effects and cashing in on the brand.

Hit the jump to check out the Dracula Untold trailer plus five new images.  The film opens October 17th, and stars Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon, Diarmaid Murtagh, and Dominic Cooper.

First Poster for DRACULA UNTOLD Starring Luke Evans and a Cape Made out of Bats

dracula-untold-poster

Universal has released the first Dracula Untold poster.  What was “untold”?  The origins of Dracula, which we were all aching to see, I guess.  I suppose tacking on “untold” is better than “Dracula: Origins” or the original title, “Dracula: Year Zero“, but it’s probably underwhelming no matter what because Dracula is pretty tired at this point.  Perhaps this origin story, which marks the feature directing debut of Gary Shore, is a fresh, interesting take on the character.  Part of that take apparently involves a cape comprised of flying rodents.

Hit the jump to check out the Dracula Untold poster.  The film opens October 17th and stars Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon, Diarmaid Murtagh, Dominic Cooper, and Samantha Barks. [Update: Universal has released a second poster, which we've added after the jump.]

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG Blu-ray Review

the-hobbit-the-desolation-of-smaug-blu-ray-review

The prospect of Peter Jackson directing an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Hobbit was an exciting one.  After all, this was the guy behind the brilliant Lord of the Rings trilogy, and now he had even more advanced technology at his fingertips to bring Tolkein’s world to life.  That excitement, however, was dampened by the release of the first film in Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, as the result was a bloated, CG-filled disappointment that seemed to relish in meandering instead of advancing the plot.  The sequel, then, was released to significantly lowered expectations, and while Jackson’s second film is an improvement over An Unexpected Journey, it still carries many of the same faults.  Hit the jump for my The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Blu-ray review.

Luke Evans Talks THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, THERE AND BACK AGAIN, His Desire to Direct, DRACULA: UNTOLD, THE CROW, and More

With Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug arriving on Blu-ray tomorrow, I recently landed an exclusive interview with Luke Evans (he plays Bard the Bowman).   As most of you know, the film continues the adventures of Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and the band of dwarves as they move forward on their quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, all the while Gandalf (Ian McKellen) investigates a disturbing presence that may be returning to Middle Earth.  Smaug introduces a host of other new characters like the Master of Lake-town (Stephen Fry), and the elves Thranduil (Lee Pace) and Tauriel (Evangeline Lily), but the film also sees the return of Lord of the Rings favorite Legolas (Orlando Bloom).

During the interview Evans talked about his experiences being part of The Hobbit movies, deleted scenes, doing additional photography for the Battle of the Five Armies (which takes place in The Hobbit: There and Back Again), having young fans recognize him, and more.  Evans also talked about Dracula: Untold, The Crow remake, his thoughts on an Immortals sequel, wanting to direct, and what props he’s kept.  Hit the jump for what he had to say.

FAST & FURIOUS 6 Blu-ray Review

It’s now nearly impossible to watch Fast & Furious 6, and not reflect on the passing of star Paul Walker.  Surely this big fun summer movie will now be tinged with a melancholy that it will be the last time Walker got to play Brian O’Conner in total.  But removed from the context of grief, Furious 6 (as it’s titled on screen) is a lot of fun, for the most part.  Vin Diesel, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Michelle Rodriguez co-star in this tale of underground racers turned crime-fighters.  My review of Fast and Furious 6 follows after the jump.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG Review

After the disappointing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, director Peter Jackson has found his way back to ruling in Middle-earth with the sequel, The Hobbit: The Desolation of SmaugUnexpected Journey gave us the comfort food of familiar locales, but the story lacked urgency.  Desolation of Smaug reveals that while Unexpected Journey may have been a somewhat tedious set-up, the payoff is a fleet-footed, thrilling second chapter that confidently expands the world instead of creeping around the one Jackson previously created in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Two New Images, 5 Posters, and End Credits Song from THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

We’re a little over a month away from the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and the marketing continues to ramp up.  On Monday, we got a new trailer along with a live fan Q&A with Peter Jackson and the cast.  Yesterday, there was a new production blog, and today we have two more images along with the end credits theme, “I See Fire” by Ed Sheeran.  I presume that’s an abbreviated version of the full title, “I See Fire because It’s Coming out of the Mouth of the Giant Talking Dragon”.  Like a large portion of the marketing for Desolation of Smaug, these images highlight Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly) because the characters are shiny and new.  As for the song, it doesn’t really do anything for me, but maybe it will work better after seeing the movie (I felt that way with Emiliana Torrini‘s “Gollum’s Song” from The Two Towers).

Hit the jump to check out the images and listen to the song.  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in 2D, 3D, HFR 3D, and IMAX 3D on December 13th.

Earlier today, director Peter Jackson and a good chunk of his The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug cast took part in a worldwide Q&A with fans that was simulcast across the globe.  Those in attendance included Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Richard Armitage, Lee Pace, and Andy Serkis, who not only reprised his role as Gollum in the first film but acted as the second unit director of the entire trilogy.  The discussion covered a variety of Hobbit-related subjects, including the 10 weeks of additional shooting this summer, what classic fiction character inspired Lilly’s performance, when we’ll see The Lord of the Rings trilogy blooper reels, and more.  Additionally, a new trailer was unveiled that has now been released online.

Hit the jump for a recap of the highlights from the event, a video of the event itself, and the new Laketown-heavy trailer.  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in 2D, 3D, and HFR 3D on December 13th.
