Miles Teller Talks WHIPLASH, the Film’s Themes of Sacrifice and the Price of Greatness, the Fast Production Schedule, and More at Sundance

miles-teller-whiplash-interview

One of my favorite films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival was writer/director Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash.  The film stars Miles Teller as an aspiring jazz drummer who aspires to greatness under a ruthless instructor, played brilliantly by J.K. Simmons.  While the film focuses on musicians, it’s really about anyone trying to become great at something and the cost of achieving said goal.  Trust me, it’s a great movie, and one you’ll be able to see by the end of the year because Sony Pictures Classics picked up the film for domestic distribution.  Whiplash also won both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize for the U.S. Dramatic competition at Sundance.  For more on the film, read Matt’s review.

The day after the world premiere, I landed a video interview with Teller.  He talked about being at Sundance two years in a row, how he only wrapped on Whiplash in October, working with J.K. Simmons, the film’s themes of sacrifice and the price of greatness, the Divergent sequel, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Final Trailer for DIVERGENT Starring Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, and Kate Winslet

Summit Entertainment has released a new trailer for Neil Burger‘s adaptation of Veronica Roth‘s best-selling young adult novel, Divergent.  The film takes place in a society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities. Tris (Shailene Woodley) is a young girl who doesn’t fit into any of the pre-assigned groups and faces grave consequences due to her status as a “Divergent.”  This trailer goes heavy on the story although there’s some bits of action scattered throughout.  I’m still a bit unclear on how one young woman’s “divergence” can bring down “the system” or how that system keeps society under control, but this trailer has made me eager to find out the answers.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Theo James, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, Tony Goldwyn, Ashley Judd, and Kate WinsletDivergent opens on March 21st.

Fresh off his film Whiplash winning both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, actor Miles Teller is going the biopic route.  It was announced today that Teller will star opposite Aaron Eckhart in Bleed for This, a film about boxer Vinny Panzienza, who made a triumphant return to the ring a year after a car accident rendered him unable to walk.  Eckhart will play infamous trainer Kevin Rooney, who helped train Panzienza for his return.  Ben Younger (Boiler Room) wrote the script and will direct, and Martin Scorsese is attached to the Synchronicity Entertainment project as an executive producer.

Teller next appears onscreen in this March’s YA adaptation Divergent, and Summit is expected to begin production on the sequel Insurgent this year if the first film catches on with audiences.  No word on when Bleed for This might begin filming, but Teller could also be shooting The Fantastic Four in 2014 as well if he indeed joins the cast of Fox’s reboot.

It isn’t enough to just make a movie that dissects romance from the guy’s perspective. When you make a relationship movie, moviegoers are going to want your real life advice, too.  Zac Efron, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller star in That Awkward Moment as Jason, Mikey and Daniel. When Mikey gets hit with a divorce, Jason and Daniel decide to lift his spirits by professing their dedication to the single life. They make a pact to stay unattached and head out ready to indulge in quick flings together. However, that turns out to be easier said than done because Mikey’s still hung up on his ex, Daniel starts to fall for his wing woman, Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis), and Jason meets Ellie (Imogen Poots), someone who actually makes him want more out of relationship for the first time in his life. Hit the jump for more.

With That Awkward Moment nearing its January 31st wide release, Efron, Jordan, Teller, Poots and writer-director Tom Gormican sat down for a press conference in New York City where there were questions about inspiration, casting and filming techniques, but loads more digging for information about what the group values in their real life relationships.

TOP 5: Sundance 2014, THE RAID 2 Trailer, Quentin Tarantino’s THE HATEFUL EIGHT, New Trailer/Promo for Disney’s MALEFICENT, STAR WARS News

If you’ve yet to check out writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton‘s Short Term 12, what are you waiting for? The film hit shelves on Blu-ray/DVD on January 14th, rendering the “it’s not playing anywhere near me” excuse invalid. I had the opportunity to watch it last weekend and I was blown away. Much has been made of Brie Larson‘s performance and for good reason: it’s terrific. She’s not alone in that regard, though. The turns by Kaitlyn Dever and Keith Stanfield are nothing short of excellent and, in particular, a scene between Stanfield and John Gallagher Jr. in which Stanfield’s character, Marcus, bares his emotional scars via an original rap verse is equal parts heartbreaking and jaw-dropping. Watching Short Term 12 is an emotional roller coaster. You’ll laugh, cry, feel anger, love, hope, and despair. You’ll catch a glimpse of just how lonely a life can be and, at the same time, appreciate how opening ourselves up to the possibility of trust and love is a powerful decision that doesn’t come easily for all of us.

My Blu-ray/DVD recommendation of the week in the books, this week’s Top 5 highlights all of our Sundance 2014 coverage to date, a new trailer for The Raid 2 (including Matt’s Sundance review), Quentin Tarantino‘s The Hateful Eight script leak, a new trailer for Disney’s Maleficent, and a variety of news from the Star Wars: Episode VII camp. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each of the above.

Perhaps you missed Rabbit Hole, but between Footloose, 21 & Over, The Spectacular Now, all the buzz coming out of Sundance for Whiplash and the fact that he’s clearly earned himself a place in the incessant blockbuster rumor mill, it’s obvious that Miles Teller is one to watch. In his latest release, That Awkward Moment, Teller steps in as Daniel, a 20-something living in New York City who’s busy at work by day and picking up ladies at night. When Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) gets hit with a divorce, Daniel and Jason (Zac Efron) decide it’s time to embrace the single life together. However, it’s easier said than done because when Daniel starts to fall for his wing-woman, Chelsea (Mackenzie Davis), he’s genuinely thrilled to start the relationship, but just can’t build up the nerve to tell his friends.

With That Awkward Moment heading towards its January 31st wide release, Collider got the chance to sit down with Teller and discuss how the film has made him an honorary love guru. Check out Teller’s dating advice as well as what he told us about his preparation process, the challenge of establishing a comedic rhythm, his audition for Star Wars: Episode VII, potentially beefing up for Fantastic Four, his thoughts on the final book of the Divergent trilogy and much more in the interview below.  Hit the jump for more.

Sundance 2014: WHIPLASH Review

whiplash-slice

We know “greatness” demands sacrifice.  It’s blood, sweat, and tears, and if you’re not willing to dish out all three constantly and consistently, then hey, you’re not worthy of your dream.  Physical greatness, the greatness of athletes, for examples, is easily quantifiable.  But when that physicality is blended with musical expression, it becomes something more vague, complex, and fascinating.  Writer-director Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash provides an intense and disturbing exploration of the primal drive to dominate and achieve greatness but at a horrific cost.  Anchored by extraordinary performances from lead actors Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons, Chazelle’s film never loses its brooding, unnerving energy even as it stumbles trying to find a fitting crescendo.

Summit Entertainment has released a new full trailer and poster for director Neil Burger‘s futuristic thriller Divergent.  Based on the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth, the film takes place in a society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities. Tris (Shailene Woodley) is a young girl who doesn’t fit into any of the pre-assigned groups and faces grave consequences due to her status as a “Divergent.”  The trailer does a nice job of setting up the world of the film as well as teasing both the adventurous and romantic aspects of the story.  Unlike Twilight, however, there is no love triangle in Divergent,  and Tris is very much a strong and independent female character.  Having read and enjoyed the book, this trailer works pretty well for me, but I’m interested to see how those unfamiliar with the source material respond.  It’s tough to tease the most exciting aspects of the story without spoiling major plot points, but things get extremely intense.

Miles Teller Says DIVERGENT Sequel to Shoot in April; Confirms THE FANTASTIC FOUR Talks

Miles Teller’s career is heating up, and rightly so.  He gave one of the year’s best performances in The Spectacular Now, he’ll be seen later this year in the R-rated rom-com That Awkward Moment, and then he’s co-starring in the adaptation of the young adult best-seller, Divergent.  It turns out that Lionsgate is so confident in the movie that they’re already looking ahead to start filming the sequel soon after the first movie opens.  In a recent interview at the Savannah Film Festival, Teller said he thinks they’re going to start filming the Divergent sequel, Insurgent, in April.  However, it’s worth noting that the producers and studios may be keeping him and his co-stars in a holding pattern so that he has to keep that time frame available even if shooting doesn’t begin immediately.  Keep in mind that Divergent opens March 21, 2014, and unless it’s a ridiculous hit, the filmmakers are going to want to keep an eye on the public’s reaction.

Hit the jump for Teller talking about possibly starring in the Fantastic Four reboot.
