Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for director Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming sci-fi film Oblivion. The story takes place on a dystopian Earth and stars Tom Cruise as a drone repairman who holds the future of mankind in his hands after discovering a crashed spaceship.  While the film’s first trailer was a tad underwhelming, this is undoubtedly the best trailer yet.  It does an excellent job of setting up the film’s plot while also teasing some absolutely gorgeous visuals and exciting tech.  We also get a good look at the character played by Melissa Leo, who appears to have some mysterious motives.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Olga KurylenkoAndrea Riseborough, and Morgan FreemanOblivion opens on April 12th exclusively in IMAX theaters, and expands nationwide on April 19th. [Update: Universal has also unveiled a batch of high-resolution images and posters, which are now included after the jump.]

Universal Pictures has released a couple of new posters for director Joseph Kosinski’s (Tron: Legacy) upcoming sci-fi pic Oblivion.  The story takes place on a dystopian Earth and stars Tom Cruise as a drone repairman who holds the future of mankind in his hands after discovering a crashed spaceship.  These posters highlight Cruise’s relationship with a mysterious character played by Morgan Freeman, as well as the vast, dystopian landscape of Earth.  The latest trailer did an excellent job of laying out the film’s plot and the visuals look gorgeous, so hopefully Kosinski delivers a worthy entry into the sci-fi genre.

A new trailer and poster have been released for Joseph Kosinski‘s sci-fi action film, Oblivion.  The story takes place on a dystopian Earth, and stars Tom Cruise as a drone repairman who holds the future of mankind in his hands after discovering a crashed spaceship.  The first trailer didn’t do much for me, but this new trailer does a much better job of laying out the plot, the conflict, and the larger world.  Now I’m intrigued, and I hope that Kosinski can deliver on the premise.

The first trailer for Antoine Fuqua’s Olympus Has Fallen is now available online.  In the first of two White House-centric action flicks this year, Fuqua strikes hard and fast to bring down the President of the United States and the symbolic building of his power.  At the same time, he establishes a great foundation for the protagonist’s heroic arc, which makes for a welcome return to action for star Gerard Butler.  There’s a bit of Expendables-style flair and over-the-top effects that are more in line with what we can expect from Roland Emmerich’s White House Down, but Fuqua’s pedigree of bringing out the truth in his characters gives me faith that this will be more than just “Die Hard meets Air Force One on steroids.”

Starring Aaron Eckhart, Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDermott and Angela Bassett, Olympus Has Fallen opens on March 22nd.  Hit the jump to check out the first trailer and poster.

New images have been released for the comedies The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Last VegasWonderstone stars Steve Carell as the eponymous magician whose relationship with his partner (Steve Buscemi) becomes strained after the arrival of a hipper illusionist (Jim Carrey).  The script comes from Horrible Bosses screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein so I’ve got high hopes.  As for Last Vegas (a.k.a. “The Hangover with old guys”), the movie centers on four old friends (played by Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline, and Morgan Freeman) who decide to throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the only one of them who has remained single.

First Trailer for Joseph Kosinski’s OBLIVION Starring Tom Cruise

The first trailer for director Joseph Kosinski’s (TRON: Legacy) sci-fi film Oblivion has been released.  At first blush, it’s not exactly what I was expecting and I think that bodes well for the picture. Rather than a straight shoot-em-up actioner or a generic survival story, Oblivion looks to have elements of mystery and betrayal all tied into Tom Cruise’s character, Jack Harper.  Olga Kurylenko looks beautiful even dressed-down and Morgan Freeman channels his own version of Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus. The all-white aesthetic looks sharp and clean against a backdrop of chaos and destruction and the overall design definitely has some nods to TRON. There are also elements of The Fifth Element, Minority Report and The Matrix presented in this introductory trailer, but Oblivion looks to be something all its own. (But what is up with that creature that looks like Darth Vader and sounds like a Tusken raider?)

The film also stars Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa LeoOblivion opens on April 19, 2013.  Hit the jump to watch.

Just yesterday the first trailer for the magician-centered pic Now You See Me was released online, and now a large batch of images from the film have surfaced.  The movie follows an FBI squad on the heels of a team of bank-robbing magicians who share their profits with the audience.  Directed by Louis Letterier (Clash of the Titans), the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast that includes Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Melanie Laurent, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine.  The trailer played a bit like a “fun” version of The Prestige with a dash of Ocean’s Eleven thrown in for good measure, and I’m interested to see what the full has in store.

Hit the jump to peruse the images.  The film also stars Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, and CommonNow You See Me opens on June 7, 2013. [Update: We've been asked by the studio to take the images down as they were not part of an official release.]

The first trailer for Now You See Me has been released.  The film follows an FBI squad on the heels of a team of bank-robbing magicians who share their profits with the audience.  Sounds like Ocean’s Eleven with a magical twist, right? Well, the trailer shows that that’s certainly the case, but the “magic” tricks rely heavily on spectacle and computerized effects, throwing practicality right out the window. So it appears to be more of an action adventure flick with magical elements than any kind of head-scratcher; still could be fun though!

Warner Bros. Launches Awards Campaign for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

the dark knight rises batman bane

As we move closer towards awards season, studios are busy finalizing which of their films to push in which categories in order to give them the best shot at winning.  Given that the Best Picture snub for The Dark Knight in 2008 is widely considered a large reason why the Academy subsequently expanded the category to a larger number of nominees, we knew Warner Bros. would be launching a campaign for The Dark Knight Rises.  Alas, the “For Your Consideration” campaign for Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy closer is off and running, and we’ve got a look at which categories WB is pulling for.  Hit the jump for more.

The first image from the “The Hangover with old guys” comedy Last Vegas has been released on the heels of the official start of production.  The story centers on four old friends who decide to throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the only one of them who has remained single.  Jon Turtletaub (National Treasure) directs the rather impressive cast that includes Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Kevin Kline, and Morgan Freeman.  Filming has now begun in Las Vegas (though this first image is horribly photoshopped) and will continue in Atlanta.  The cast will be doing location shooting in Vegas on the strip and at Aria Resort & Casino.

Hit the jump to check out the first image and to read the full press release.  The film also stars Mary Steenburgen, Jerry Ferrara (Entourage), Romany Malco (The 40-Year-Old Virgin), and Roger Bart (Political Animals).  Last Vegas opens on December 20th, 2013.

Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman to Star in THE LAST KNIGHTS; John Cusack to Lead Roger Avary’s AIRSPACE

As AFM rolls on, so do plenty of casting stories.  While the casting is in place, it’s still unknown if any of these movies will actually make it in front of cameras, but they’re being packaged for potential international buyers.  First up, Screen Daily [via The Playlist] reports on the interesting pairing of Morgan Freeman and Clive Owen for The Last Knights.  Written by Michael Konyves (Barney’s Version) and directed by Kazuaki Kiriya (The Legend of Goemon), the film is about a “a band of warriors who seek to avenge the loss of their master at the hands of a corrupt emperor.”  I have no idea where Freeman and Owen fit into a story that sounds like it takes place in Feudal Japan, but I’m interested.  Filming will take place in the Czech Republic, although that’s likely for tax incentives and the production could use soundstages.

When last we reported on Lego: The Piece of Resistance, it was to tell you that Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) would be voicing the protagonist.  Now, it looks like directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) will be adding Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games) and Morgan Freeman (The Dark Knight Rises) to their voice cast.  The picture, which is an 80/20 blend of animation/live-action, centers on Emmet (Pratt), an “instruction worker” who is mistaken for the Master Builder.  The Lego crew them embarks on a quest to prevent an evil tyrant from gluing the universe together.  Hit the jump for more on Banks and Freeman’s roles in the film, as well as updates on other cast members.

It’s safe to assume that close to 99% of this site’s readership will be sitting in a theater late tomorrow night, preparing to finally see the closing chapter in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.  Though we’re just one, long, excruciating day away from the release of The Dark Knight Rises, Warner Bros. has released yet another batch of images from the film just in case you weren’t already doubly excited to see the film.  There’s nothing really revelatory here, but we do get some glimpses of what I can only assume is the highlight of the film: Mr. Matthew Modine.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  As you well know, The Dark Knight Rises opens on July 20th.
