FilmDistrict has released a behind-the-scenes featurette for director Spike Lee’s Oldboy, and it reveals a great deal of new footage from the reimagining of Park Chan-wook’s revenge classic.  The story centers on a man (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped for mysterious reasons, and is released twenty years later with no explanation.  Once free, he goes on a mission to find his captor and take revenge.  In this featurette we see Lee, screenwriter Mark Protosevich, and the main cast discuss the film and Lee’s take on the material.  We also get to see to some very promising new footage, including a glimpse at Brolin’s iteration of the famous hallway fight scene.

New Posters for Spike Lee’s OLDBOY and BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR

Some new posters for a couple of anticipated fall releases have landed online.  Briefly:

  • Oldboy – The new poster for Spike Lee’s reimagining boasts a stoic Josh Brolin and some dodgy photoshop.  The famous hammer from Park Chan-wook’s original film makes an appearance, but it’s not exactly grafted onto the poster with grace.  Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, and Samuel L. Jackson also star.  The film opens on November 27th.
  • Blue Is the Warmest Color – The US poster for director Abdellatif Kechiche’s epically intimate Palm D’Or-winning drama may immediately bring to mind the film’s NC-17 rating, but this beautiful and heartbreaking relationship drama is so much more than lesbian sex scenes.  Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux turn in a pair of phenomenal performances in one of the best films of the year.  Read Matt’s review from TIFF here.  The pic opens stateside on October 25th.

New OLDBOY Viral Posters and Promo Video Advertise a Terrifying Stay at “Hotel Oldboy” [UPDATED]

The viral marketing campaign for director Spike Lee’s Oldboy reinterpretation has been pretty impressive/bleak thus far, and that streak continues with a new series of posters that advertise the amenities found at “Hotel Oldboy” with tongue firmly planted in cheek.  We see gruesome looks at Josh Brolin’s character’s captivity accompanied by taglines like “24/7 private security” and “three in-room meals a day.”  Everything we’ve seen from the film thus far has shown that Lee is not smoothing out the rough edges of Park Chan-wook’s original 2003 film, and I continue to look forward to the finished product.

FilmDistrict has released four new images from Spike Lee‘s remake/re-adaptation of Oldboy.  The story centers on a man (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped for mysterious reasons, and is released twenty years later with no explanation.  Once free, he goes on a mission to find his captor and take revenge.  I’m really excited by the visual style Lee is bringing to the picture.  It’s unlikely that he’ll be able to eclipse Park Chan-wook‘s 2003 film of the same name, but he might come out with something that’s on par.

Hit the jump to check out the images along with a video of Lee talking about reteaming with Samuel L. Jackson after twenty years and the importance of finding a unique look for the actor.  The film also stars Elizabeth Olsen, Michael Imperioli, Lance Reddick, and Sharlto CopleyOldboy opens November 27th.

There’s nothing quite like being reunited with old friends, even if that friend happens to be a bloody hammer.  Joe Doucett (Josh Brolin) is happy to see anyone at all after emerging from 20 years of forced solitary confinement in Spike Lee’s Oldboy.  This reinterpretation of Park Chan-wook’s 2003 film sees Doucett go in search of answers and revenge only to find that things are more complicated than he could have imagined.  We have a collection of four exclusive images from the upcoming film that feature Brolin and co-star Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene), along with a familiar piece of hardware that should please fans of the original film.

Also starring Sharlto Copley, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Imperioli, and Lance Reddick, Spike Lee’s Oldboy opens November 27th.  Hit the jump to view the new images.

New Images from Spike Lee’s OLDBOY Featuring Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen

Some new images from director Spike Lee’s Oldboy have made their way online.  Based on Park Chan-wook’s 2003 thriller of the same name, the story centers on a man (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped for mysterious reasons, and is released twenty years later with no explanation.  Once free, he goes on a mission to find his captor and take revenge.  The first red-band trailer showed that Lee isn’t holding back when it comes to the brutality of the film, and he also looks to have crafted an interesting take of his own on the familiar story.  These new images don’t give away much, but we do see Brolin’s character looking very Howard Hughes-esque while in captivity.

Spike Lee’s OLDBOY Pushed Back to November 27th

Director Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy will now hit theaters a month later than originally planned.  Initially scheduled to open on October 11th and then subsequently pushed back to October 25th, FilmDistrict will now release Oldboy wide on November 27th.  The reason for the delay is unknown, but the Thanksgiving holiday offers very little serious genre competition for the pic, as it now squares off against Disney’s animated film Frozen, the musical Black Nativity, and the Jason Statham action-thriller Homefront.  The first red-band trailer for Oldboy was incredibly impressive and I was really looking forward to seeing what Lee had up his sleeve, so it’s unfortunate that we have to wait even longer to see the full film.  That being said, I’d be surprised if Oldboy didn’t pop up at one of the major film festivals earlier in the fall.

For those unaware, Oldboy centers on a man (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped for mysterious reasons, and is released twenty years later with no explanation.  Once free, he goes on a mission to find his captor and take revenge.  The film also stars Elizabeth OlsenSharlto CopleyLance ReddickMichael Imperioli, and James Ransone.

First Red-Band Trailer for Spike Lee’s OLDBOY Starring Josh Brolin

FilmDistrict has released the first red-band trailer for director Spike Lee’s remake of Oldboy.  For those unfamiliar with the story, it centers on a man (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped for mysterious reasons, and is released twenty years later with no explanation.  Once free, he goes on a mission to find his captor and take revenge.  Lee’s fingerprints are all over this trailer, and the film looks to have a rather sinister tone despite its gorgeous cinematography courtesy of Sean Bobbitt.  There are a couple of interesting deviations from Park Chan-wook‘s original film that are glimpsed, but there are also a few moments that are shot-for-shot recreations from the 2003 South Korean thriller.  Samuel L. Jackson is a welcome presence towards the end of the trailer, and it’s clear that Lee has no intention of toning down any of the story’s violence.  This is promising stuff indeed, and I’m really looking forward to checking out the full film in a couple of months.

First Official Poster for Spike Lee’s OLDBOY Starring Josh Brolin, Sharlto Copley, and Elizabeth Olsen

Today, FilmDistrict has released the first official poster for Spike Lee‘s new adaptation of the manga, Oldboy.  The comic was previously adapted by Park Chan-wook, and centers on a man who is inexplicably kidnapped and held prisoner for twenty years only to be released for no apparent reason.  The man then sets out to get revenge on his mysterious captor.  Park’s film is excellent, and so it’s difficult not to be wary of a new adaptation, but Lee has a unique style plus an excellent cast featuring Josh Brolin, Sharlto Copley, and Elizabeth Olsen.  A couple fun facts about this poster: the title is in Brolin’s handwriting based on the letters he writes to his daughter while in captivity.  More interesting is that this image is an actual shot from the movie, not a composite.  So why is there a woman in the background with hash marks on her umbrella?

First Posters for Spike Lee’s OLDBOY and James Wan’s INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2

With CinemaCon starting tomorrow in Las Vegas, I arrived earlier today to take pictures of the new posters on display.  For those unaware, CinemaCon is a convention put on for theater owners in order to get a look at what the studios have to offer for the rest of the year, and where vendors can show new products for theaters to buy.  It’s basically Comic-Con for theater owners.  Besides showing off never before seen footage, the studios often bring the cast and the filmmakers.  Over the course of a few days, Hollywood comes to Las Vegas.  So over the next few days expect tons of updates.  I’ll have new posters, thoughts on the new movie footage, and exclusives interviews.  It should be a fun week.

To start things off, I just spotted the first posters for Spike Lee’s Oldboy and James Wan’s Insidious: Chapter 2.  Hit the jump to check them out.

Josh Brolin Talks OLDBOY Remake and Jason Reitman’s LABOR DAY; Says They Shot Long Improvised Takes for OLDBOY Motel Scenes

When it was first announced that an American remake of director Park Chan-wook’s South Korean revenge film Oldboy was in the works, fans were understandably wary of the prospect.  Then Spike Lee signed on to direct.  If anything can be assumed of a Spike Lee film, it’s that it’s definitely not going to be a commercial cash-in.  Lee cares deeply about artistic integrity, so it’s with cautious optimism that his remake of Oldboy is being anticipated.

Steve sat down with star Josh Brolin last weekend to talk about his upcoming crime drama Gangster Squad, and the actor also took some time to discuss Oldboy.  During the interview, Brolin talked extensively about how Lee’s Oldboy differs from the original, reaching out to Park Chan-wook for his blessing, the action scenes, and he revealed that Lee shot some extended, improvised takes for Brolin’s scenes in the motel room.  The actor also talked a bit about writer/director Jason Reitman’s upcoming adaptation of Labor Day, in which he stars alongside Kate Winslet.  Hit the jump for the full comments.
