Laika is on a roll with Coraline, ParaNorman and now The Boxtrolls.  It’s sometimes a slow roll because of their dedication to painstakingly crafting their films, but it’s worth it.  Stop-motion animation takes forever, and pulling it off in such a gorgeous manner must take even longer.  Now we have a new teaser and poster that bring us a little closer to the world we’ll be visiting in a little over six weeks.

Hit the jump to check out The Boxtrolls teaser and poster that introduces the characters of Fish, Oil Can, Knickers, Wheels, Sweets, Eggs and Sparky.  The Boxtrolls arrives in theaters on September 26th and features the voices of Isaac Hempstead WrightElle Fanning, Ben KingsleyToni ColletteNick FrostSimon PeggRichard AyoadeTracy Morgan, and Jared Harris. First SON OF A GUN Images and Poster Featuring Ewan McGregor and Brenton Thwaites in the Aussie Crime Thriller

Just ahead of its debut as the Cinefest Oz’s opener, the first Son of a Gun images have landed online.  Julius Avery‘s directorial debut stars Brenton Thwaites (The Giver) as JR, a young man who becomes a protégé of Australia’s most notorious criminal Brendan Lynch (Ewan McGregor).  “Locked up for a minor crime, JR quickly learns the harsh realities of prison life. There is no survival guide. Keep your head down, do your time, get out. Protection – if you can get it – is paramount.”  These images don’t look like they show much of the lockup, but I’m still intrigued by the premise, and hopefully we’ll get to see the film in the U.S. soon.

Hit the jump to check out the Son of a Gun images and poster.  The film also stars Alicia Vikander, Jacek Koman, Matt Nable, and Tom BudgeSon of a Gun opens in Australia in October, and although A24 has the U.S. distribution rights, they haven’t set a domestic release date yet.

The Inmates Take Over in the STONEHEARST ASYLUM Trailer and Poster

One weird thing about Stonehearst Asylum is that I had never heard of the film before today, despite a cast featuring Michael Caine, Ben Kingsley and Kate Beckinsale, but suddenly it’s a real entity with a trailer and poster and everything. Of course that can happen when you’ve been operating under the name Eliza Graves (a film I had been aware of) for several years and haven’t announced a title change.  Brad Anderson (The Call) directed it from a screenplay by Joe Gangemi.  The film is based on the Edgar Allan Poe story The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.

In the film Jim Sturgess plays a recent medical school grad who takes a position at a mental institution soon finds himself taken with one of his colleagues, though he has no initial idea of a recent, horrifying staffing change.  The film also stars Brendan Gleeson and David Thewlis.  Hit the jump for the Stonehearst Asylum trailer and poster.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT Poster Confirms 2015 Release Date for Quentin Tarantino’s Next Film

Fresh off confirmation straight from the horse’s mouth that The Hateful Eight will be Quentin Tarantino’s next film, we have the very first, official The Hateful Eight poster.  Not only is this an excellent piece of artwork that teases the bloody story of the Western, but the poster also confirms a planned 2015 release (likely in December) as well as the fact that Tarantino will shoot the pic in “Super CinemaScope”.  We previously heard that Tarantino was aiming to film The Hateful Eight in 70mm, and this poster indeed confirms that we’re in for one epic-looking Western.  The story follows a group of passengers on a stagecoach that get caught and trapped in a blizzard, where they’re forced to confront the ratcheting tension that develops.

THE MAZE RUNNER Debuts Nine New Posters; Some With a Refreshingly Classic Look

20th Century Fox has released nine new posters for The Maze Runner (this is in addition to the surprisingly good trailer that hit earlier today), director Wes Ball’s adaptation of the James Dashner novel.  The story revolves around a teenager who wakes up in the middle of a maze with no memory of who he is, surrounded by other teenage boys who also don’t know who they are, where they are, or what the maze is either.  As stakes continue to mount, though, they realize they must find a way out before it’s too late.

The character posters fall a little flat to me, but the conceptual ones out of this batch are really worth a look.  The film stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Aml Ameen, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong Lee, and Patricia Clarkson. Hit the jump to check out the The Maze Runner posters.  The film opens in theaters on September 19th.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES Trailer and Poster: Peter Jackson’s Trilogy Concludes in Epic Fashion

Warner Bros. has released the first The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies trailer for the final chapter in Peter Jackson‘s Hobbit trilogy.  This is the trailer they showed us at Comic-Con on Saturday, and it’s interesting to see how the prequel trilogy is trying to pull into The Lord of the Rings by using “The Steward of Gondor”, which was sung by Pippin (Billy Boyd) in The Return of the King.  The song still works here because it’s sad and somber, but the line that sticks with me from this trailer is when Thorin asks his company, “Will you follow me one last time?”  It’s a line that’s really directed towards the audience, but there’s a weariness to it that’s surprising.  It’s almost like saying, “Well, we’ve already come this far.  May as well finish it out.”

Check out the The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies trailer and new poster after the jump, and click here to read our full Comic-Con panel recap.  The film stars Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Fry, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Orlando BloomThe Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opens in theaters on December 17th.

New AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Posters Pit Black Widow and Captain America Against an Army of Robots

Yesterday, Marvel revealed two new pieces of concept art from writer/director Joss Whedon’s Avengers sequel that gave us a look at Iron Man and Scarlet Witch doing battle against an Ultron army.  It appears that the two pieces are actually part of a larger banner, as today’s new Avengers: Age of Ultron poster shows Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow fighting off some Ultrons as well, with tiny glimpses of Thor’s hammer and Hulk’s big green hand at the edges.  I imagine Marvel will be releasing the rest of these individual posters over the next few days, leading up to the full banner reveal on Saturday in anticipation of the film’s Hall H panel at Comic-Con.

Hit the jump to take a look at today’s new poster, and check back on Saturday for our full panel recap.  Avengers: Age of Ultron also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, James Spader, Paul Bettany, and Don Cheadle.  The film opens in theaters on May 1, 2015. [Update: We've added a Captain America poster as well.]

THE NOVEMBER MAN Gets a New Trailer and Poster; Seems Slightly More Fun Than Before

by     Posted 36 days ago

Relativity Media has released the second trailer for The November Man, director Roger Donaldson’s (The Bank Job) new action thriller.  The film stars Pierce Brosnan as an ex-CIA operative who is brought back in on a personal mission and finds himself pitted against his former pupil in a deadly game involving high-level CIA officials and the Russian president-elect.

While the first trailer was brief and dour, this new one is actually quite a bit more fun.  If you can embrace the incredibly on-the-nose exposition in the first half of the trailer, then you should have no problem tuning in to the (admittedly slight) humor built into the second half.  Only time will tell if this film transcends the tired tropes on display here, but at the very least it promises to be something of a quality repetition of the clichés its embracing.  Olga Kurylenko, Luke Bracey and Eliza Taylor also star. Hit the jump for the new The November Man trailer and poster.  The film opens in theaters on August 27th.

In case you weren’t aware, San Diego Comic-Con 2014 is kicking off its programming tonight with Preview Night, in which lots and lots of marketing appears for various upcoming projects.  One such anticipated picture from Marvel Studios is the Peyton Reed-directed Ant-Man, starring Paul Rudd as the title hero alongside Michael Douglas.  Both actors are featured in this new poster which shows off some pre-production artwork from Andy Park created exclusively for the convention.  Also on display is a tease of the hero’s size-changing abilities which should prove to be a lot of fun to play with on the big screen.

Also starring Michael PeñaPatrick WilsonEvangeline Lilly, and Corey StollAnt-Man opens July 17, 2015.  Hit the jump to take a look at the full Comic-Con poster for Ant-Man in all its glory.  If you missed them, check out Avengers: Age of Ultron posters featuring Iron Man & Scarlet Witch, and Black Widow and Captain America.

The Rebellion Is Coming in THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1 Comic-Con Poster

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was one of the biggest panels of Comic-Con 2013, but Lionsgate has decided to forego much of the convention this year.  Instead, they’ve released a The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 Comic-Con poster along with their odd promotion to let fans see the new trailer on a Galaxy Tab S.  This Comic-Con poster isn’t anything special in part because it’s confusing.  The Capitol is supposed to stand for carefully designed order, but artist WK Interact just threw together a mishmash of authoritarian imagery like a barcode on a granite wall, and then plastered on the “Mockingjay” emblem as if some citizen was rebelling against a piece of street art.

Hit the jump to check out the The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 Comic-Con poster.  The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Donald Sutherland, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Stanley Tucci, Jena Malone, and Julianne MooreThe Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 opens in theaters on November 21st.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Poster Finds Delight in a Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland

Warner Bros. unveiled the first The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies poster earlier today in anticipation of the film’s upcoming Comic-Con panel, and now the studio has done the same for director George Miller’s highly anticipated Mad Max sequel/reboot.  The first Mad Max: Fury Road poster shows Tom Hardy’s titular character watching an impending onslaught of presumably brutal wastelanders, complete with the delightfully ironic tagline “What a Lovely Day”.  The images we’ve seen thus far from the pic have been wonderfully strange, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the first footage at the film’s Comic-Con panel this coming Saturday.

Hit the jump to take a look at the Mad Max: Fury Road poster.  The film also stars Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Riley KeoughZoe Kravitz, Courtney EatonRosei Huntington-WhiteleyHugh Keays-ByrneNathan Jones, and Abbey Lee Kershaw.  Mad Max: Fury Road opens on May 15, 2015.

Make Money to Play the Lottery in the New NIGHTCRAWLER Trailer Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

Open Road Films has released a new Nightcrawler trailer along with the first poster.  Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, a young man who falls into the depths of L.A. crime journalism, and begins pushing the limits between covering the news and making it.  Following the intriguing viral teaser, this first official trailer makes the movie look like a must-see when it premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.  Gyllenhaal has been on a hot streak lately, and his work in Nightcrawler looks like it could be a strong companion to his unnerving performances in his most recent film, Enemy.

Hit the jump to check out the new Nightcrawler trailer and poster.  The film opens October 17th, and also stars Rene Russo, Bill Paxton, and Riz Ahmed.

First THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES Poster Reveals a Dragon Standoff

Ahead of the film’s Comic-Con panel this coming Saturday, Warner Bros. has released the first The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies for director Peter Jackson’s concluding installment in his Hobbit trilogy.  This poster officially bills the film as “The Defining Chapter”, as the title tells us we’ll be privy to a pivotal battle that sets the Middle-earth stage for the events of The Lord of the Rings saga.  Though I’ve been a bit disappointed with the Hobbit films themselves, there’s no denying that this debut Battle of the Five Armies poster is pretty swell.  It depicts a fiery standoff between the nefarious dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) and Luke Evans’ Bard the Bowman, and things do not look to be going great in Lake-Town.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY IMAX Poster Can Be Yours Next Weekend

It was almost exactly a year ago that we got our first look at footage from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy at Comic-Con, and now the film’s release is just over a week away.  If you opt to see director James Gunn’s comics adaptation in IMAX at midnight on August 1st, you’ll receive a fan-made mini-poster that’s actually quite neat.  It teases the titular Guardians (played by Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper), as well as the film’s buzzworthy soundtrack.  If early reactions are any indication, we’re in for quite a treat.
