New THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1 Trailer: Peeta Stands alongside President Snow in a Message to the Districts

Lionsgate has released a new The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 teaser trailer.  In the penultimate chapter, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) leads a revolution through the districts to rescue Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), and bring down President Snow (Donald Sutherland) once and for all.  I’m not sure any of this trailer will appear in the actual movie, but it does deliver not only Snow’s none-too-subtle hint that any rebellion will be violently snuffed out, but it also Peeta standing alongside the evil leader.  This is probably intriguing to those who haven’t read the books, and were wondering what happened to Peeta following the events of Catching Fire.

Hit the jump to check out the new The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 teaser trailer.  I’m curious if Lionsgate will follow the same strategy as they did last year, and release a full trailer at Comic-Con in July.  The film opens November 21st, and also stars Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Stanley Tucci, and Julianne Moore.

THE CONGRESS Reveals 5 New Images and Poster from Ari Folman’s Adaptation Starring Robin Wright

by     Posted 28 days ago

the-congress-images

There’s every chance that writer-director Ari Folman’s adaptation of The Congress has flown under your radar, so these new images and official poster serve to remind you that it’s worth your attention.  Though it appears to stray far from Stanislaw Lem’s source novel, the premise is still mind-bending in just how engaging it is.  The plot centers on Robin Wright, playing a heightened version of herself, who decides to sell her very essence to a movie studio in the form of a digital persona.  The lucrative deal allows her to pay for her son’s medical treatment, but also opens the door to a strange world in which her digital self is far more famous than she could ever have hoped to be.

Also starring Kodi Smit-McPheeJon HammDanny Huston, Harvey Keitel, and Paul Giamatti, Drafthouse Films will release The Congress on iTunes/On Demand July 15th; in select theaters August 29th; and in NY September 5th.  Take a look at the film’s trailer here, read up on Matt’s review of the film, and then hit the jump to take in the new images and poster.

FURY Poster: Brad Pitt Leads a World War II Tank Unit

by     Posted 28 days ago

fury-poster

Sony Pictures has released the first Fury poster for director David Ayer’s (End of Watch) upcoming World War II action drama.  The original story is set in 1945 as the Nazi regime is in collapse, and revolves around the five-man crew of an American tank called “Fury”.  Brad Pitt plays U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Wardaddy, as he leads his unit in the fight against a desperate German army.  This is undoubtedly one of my most anticipated films of the fall, and this moody debut poster hits all the right notes.  Ayer has been growing more ambitious as a director with his past few features, and I’m eager to see what he does with this eclectic ensemble cast and WWII setting.  I imagine a proper trailer will be coming our way soon, but if you missed this featurette, check out the first footage from the pic.

Hit the jump to take a closer look at the Fury poster.  The film also stars Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, Jon Bernthal, and Jason IsaacsFury opens in theaters on November 14th.

New Trailer and Poster for FRANK Starring Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Scoot McNairy, and Michael Fassbender

by     Posted 32 days ago

frank-trailer

Magnolia has released a new Frank trailer and poster.  The film stars Domhnall Gleeson as an aspiring musician who joins an eccentric band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank, played by Michael Fassbender.  The story is loosely based on Frank Sidebottom with Fassbender sporting an odd, large mask for the entirety of the film.  I enjoyed the film when I saw it at Sundance, and while it makes sense that the trailer would focus on the weirdness of the band and Frank’s behavior, the movie is really about Gleeson’s character and his desperation to find acclaim despite a dearth of talent.

Hit the jump to check out the Frank trailer and poster.  The film also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scoot McNairyFrank opens in limited release on August 15th.

New THE DROP Trailer, Posters, and Images Featuring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Matthias Schoenaerts, and James Gandolfini

Fox Searchlight has released a new The Drop trailer along with a new poster and images.  Tom Hardy plays Bob, a former criminal and current bartender working at a bar that serves as a money “drop” for local gangsters.  When the bar gets robbed, Bob and his cousin/employer Marv (James Gandolfini) find themselves in the crosshairs of an investigation and the criminal underworld.  Unlike the U.S. trailer, this international trailer features the excellent Matthias Schoenaerts, who is reteaming with his Bullhead director Michaël R. Roskam for the film.  It looks like a solid crime drama, and if anything, it will be worth watching for Gandolfini’s final big screen performance.

Hit the jump to check out The Drop trailer, poster, and images.  The film opens September 12th, and also stars Noomi Rapace, John Ortiz, Ann Dowd, and James Frecheville.

THE JUDGE Trailer: Robert Downey Jr. Goes Dramatic, Plus the Film’s First Poster

by     Posted 33 days ago

Warner Bros. has released the first The Judge trailer for director David Dobkin’s (Wedding Crashers) upcoming thriller/family drama.  Robert Downey Jr. plays an attorney who returns home for his mother’s funeral only to learn that his estranged father (Robert Duvall), a judge who suffers from Alzheimer’s, has been accused of murder.  The trailer starts out with RDJ at his Starkiest, but takes a left turn away from the arrogant individualist to more of an everyman with daddy issues once the hook of the story comes in.  It’s got a touch of schmaltz to it, but it’s also refreshing to see Downey Jr. putting in work outside of the superhero/action-adventure franchises.

Hit the jump to check out the first The Judge trailer.  The film also stars Vera Farmiga, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jeremy Strong, Billy Bob Thornton, Dax Shepard, Leighton Meester, Ken Howard, David Krumholtz, Balthazar Getty, and Denis O’HareThe Judge opens in theaters on October 10th.

First Look at Genndy Tartakovsky’s Animated POPEYE Feature Film and a New Look at SHAUN THE SHEEP

The 2014 Licensing Expo is currently underway in Las Vegas, an event that gives movie fans an early look at some upcoming properties.  While these promo posters aren’t necessarily representative of the film’s final look, they do give us an idea of the style and tone.  In the case of the promotional image for Genndy Tartakovsky’s animated feature film Popeye, it might even offer a hint of plot.  One image that’s likely very close to the final product is the poster for the Shaun the Sheep movie, since the Mark Burton and Richard Starzack film is based on the long-running Aardman animated series.  Hit the jump to check them both out.

First Poster for DRACULA UNTOLD Starring Luke Evans and a Cape Made out of Bats

by     Posted 36 days ago

dracula-untold-poster

Universal has released the first Dracula Untold poster.  What was “untold”?  The origins of Dracula, which we were all aching to see, I guess.  I suppose tacking on “untold” is better than “Dracula: Origins” or the original title, “Dracula: Year Zero“, but it’s probably underwhelming no matter what because Dracula is pretty tired at this point.  Perhaps this origin story, which marks the feature directing debut of Gary Shore, is a fresh, interesting take on the character.  Part of that take apparently involves a cape comprised of flying rodents.

Hit the jump to check out the Dracula Untold poster.  The film opens October 17th and stars Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon, Diarmaid Murtagh, Dominic Cooper, and Samantha Barks. [Update: Universal has released a second poster, which we've added after the jump.]

BIRDMAN Trailer: Michael Keaton Looks for a Revival in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Latest Film

Fox Searchlight has released the first Birdman trailer.  Birdman (or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) stars Michael Keaton as an actor who once played an iconic superhero, and now faces troubles with his ego and family as he prepares to mount a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim past glory.  Aside from the biographical implications of the story, this teaser trailer has some gorgeous shots, and looks far more fantastical than anything director Alejandro González Iñárritu has done before.  I’m also a huge fan of Keaton, and I can’t wait to see him a dramatic role that puts him front-and-center.

New PADDINGTON Trailer Goes for Gross-Out Gags and Slapstick

by     Posted 40 days ago

paddington-trailer

Following yesterday’s new images (and subsequent “Creepy Paddington” meme), a new Paddington trailer and poster have gone online.  The story centers on a young bear (voiced by Colin Firth) who is lost at Paddington Station in London, adopted by a kind family, and then Paddington sets out in search of an explorer who inspired his aunt years before.  It’s a charming story of an adorable bear, and this trailer couldn’t pander harder to children.  Paddington licks his earwax, dunks his head in a toilet, and gets his face smushed in a turnstile.  Hugh Bonneville adds a little bit of comedy that isn’t geared towards kids, but this trailer isn’t an encouraging sign for the overall movie.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  The film also stars Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, and Nicole Kidman.   Paddington opens December 25th.

THE INTERVIEW Poster: Seth Rogen and James Franco Become Propaganda

by     Posted 41 days ago

the-interview-poster-seth-rogen

In anticipation of the trailer debut later this week, Sony Pictures has released the first The Interview poster for directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s new film.  Following their incredible debut with This Is the End, Rogen and Goldberg tackle the action-comedy genre with The Interview, which stars James Franco and Rogen as a talk show host and his producer, respectively, who travel to North Korea in order to interview dictator Kim Jong-un and legitimize themselves as real journalists.  Their plans are upended, however, when the CIA recruits them to instead assassinate Kim Jong-un.  This debut poster takes the North Korea setting and runs with it, as Rogen and Franco are painted gorgeously as dictatorial propaganda.  It’s ridiculous and fantastic (especially the credit line at the top), and I cannot wait to see what they have up their sleeve with this one.

Hit the jump to check out the first The Interview poster, and check back tomorrow to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Lizzy Caplan and Randall ParkThe Interview opens in theaters on October 10th.
