Gripping THE AFFAIR Trailer Hints at Darker Undertones in New Showtime Drama Series

Showtime has released the first The Affair trailer for its upcoming drama series, and it is not at all what I expected.  Starring Dominic West (The Wire) and Ruth Wilson (Luther) and told separately from the male and female perspectives, the series is described as the exploration of two marriages and the emotional and psychological effects of the affair that disrupts them.  However, this first teaser trailer has a much darker tone to it and actually feels a bit reminiscent of HBO’s phenomenal True Detective.  There appears to be a framing device, an investigation of some sort, and a deeply traumatic event at play.  It’s really compelling stuff, especially in the way they set up the West and Wilson’s characters, and this trailer has me 100% committed to checking out the pilot.

THE FLASH Poster Leaves a Mark and Kicks Off an Easter Egg Hunt

The Emmys played out in traditional “let’s give it to whoever won last year” fashion last night, and so now it’s time to turn our attention to the upcoming 2014-15 TV season that’s just around the corner.  The CW has released the very first The Flash poster for its anticipated series, which is of course based on the DC Comics character of the same name (who may also be getting the big screen treatment in 2016).  The show is a spinoff of sorts of The CW’s other popular superhero show, Arrow, as the two series will inhabit the same universe—in fact a crossover is already planned for Episode 8 of both shows’ upcoming seasons.  This debut poster certainly flaunts star Grant Gustin’s ability to move quickly while also offering keen-eyed fans more than a couple of Easter eggs.  How many can you spot?

Hit the jump to check out The Flash poster.  The show also stars Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, Jesse L. Martin, Candice Patton, Tom Cavanagh, Rick Cosnett, and John Wesley Shipp with Robbie Amell, Wentworth Miller, and Clancy Brown poised for guest appearances.  The Flash premieres on The CW on October 7th at 8/7c.

YOUNG ONES Trailer Features Michael Shannon and Nicholas Hoult in a Fight for Water and Land

Screen Media Films has released the Young Ones trailer online.  The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where water has become scarce and the only hope for a family becomes an irrigation pipeline that can revitalize their land.  This conflict sets off a battle between the family’s patriarch Ernest Holm (Michael Shannon) and Flem Lever, a young man (Nicholas Hoult) looking to romance Ernest’s daughter Mary (Elle Fanning).  I caught Young Ones at Sundance, and it was one of the most frustrating movies I’ve seen in some time.  Taken at its individual elements—visuals, performances, structure—it’s incredible.  But these parts never built to an emotional impact for me, and it was a struggle to figure out why.  I hope other viewers have more of a connection with the picture.  At the very least, it’s a worthwhile curiosity.

Exclusive THE GUEST Poster Featuring Dan Stevens in Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett’s Latest

You think you know what Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett are capable of?  Think again.  Their past work including You’re Next and their contributions to V/H/S, V/H/S 2 and The ABCs of Death are still great and all, but their latest feature, The Guest, is like nothing you’ve ever seen before.  It stars Dan Stevens as David, a soldier who shows up at the Peterson family’s door claiming to be a friend of their son who died in action.  The Guest does have a horror quality to it, but it’s more of a bloody action thriller than anything, and an expertly stylized one at that.

With The Guest making its way into theaters in less than a month, on September 17th, Collider’s got the honor of unveiling a brand new poster for the film.  Click here to read Matt’s review and hit the jump to check out that exclusive The Guest poster.  The film also stars Maika MonroeLeland OrserSheila KelleyBrendan Meyer and Lance Reddick.

A GOOD MARRIAGE Trailer and Poster: Joan Allen and Anthony LaPaglia Have Secrets in New Stephen King Thriller

Screen Media Films has released the first A Good Marriage trailer and poster for the upcoming thriller, written by Stephen King.  Based on King’s short story of the same name, the film stars Joan Allen and Anthony LaPaglia as a seemingly happily married couple whose relationship is tested when Allen discovers that her husband may in fact be a notorious serial killer.  It looks like a decidedly Stephen King-esque story, which is fitting since he also wrote the screenplay.  I was recently reminded of Joan Allen’s brilliance while finishing up the final season of The Killing on Netflix, and combined with the film’s pulpy premise, she provides a nice point of attraction for A Good Marriage.

Exclusive Character Posters For THE ZERO THEOREM Introduce the Film’s Characters and their Philosophies

I finally got a chance to see Terry Gilliam’s new film The Zero Theorem and was mightily impressed by its ability to conjure some of the magic of Gilliam classics like Brazil and Twelve Monkeys (albeit in a far warmer, less brutal manner than the latter film).  So I’m really glad we’re debuting these character posters that don’t just showcase the performers in the film, but the philosophies of the people they are playing.  The movie is all about ideas, a philosophical dialogue.  And these get at that.

The Zero Theorem stars Christoph Waltz as Qohen Leth, a computer hacker who searches for the meaning of life while being distracted by Management, a shadowy figure from an Orwellian corporation; Melanie ThierryTilda Swinton, and David Thewlis also star.  The film hits iTunes today, August 19th and limited theaters on September 19th.  Be sure to check out the trailer and of course check out the film afterwards.  Hit the jump for our exclusive character posters from The Zero Theorem!

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels Channel LUCY in New DUMB AND DUMBER TO Posters

by     Posted 33 days ago

dumb-and-dumber-too-slice

Two brand new Dumb and Dumber To posters just popped up and rather than show Jim Carrey’s Lloyd Christmas and Jeff Daniels’ Harry Dunne in the middle of some crazy antics, like hanging with Butthole, sharing a bike made for one or driving that crazy dog grooming van, the pair is parodying Lucy.  Yes, the recent Scarlett Johansson release, Lucy.  It seems like an odd choice, but there are limited options when you consider that they can only pull this kind of thing with a Universal film.  Lucy is also fresh in our minds and one of the studio’s higher openers of the year, so it does make some sense.  Perhaps The Purge: Anarchy will be next.

According to the posters, the average person uses 10% of their brain capacity.  Hit the jump to check out what Lloyd and Harry accomplish using just 1%.  Dumb and Dumber To will make its way into theaters on November 14th and also stars Rachel Melvin, Kathleen Turner, Brady Bluhm, Laurie Holden, Steve Tom and Rob Riggle.

REVENGE OF THE GREEN DRAGONS Trailer and Poster: Chinatown Gang Members Search for the American Dream

revenge-of-the-green-dragons-trailer

A24 Films has released the first Revenge of the Green Dragons trailer and poster for directors Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs) and Andrew Loo’s upcoming crime drama.  Based on a true story, the film revolves around two immigrant brothers (played by Justin Chon and Kevin Wu) who survive the poverty of 1980s New York by joining the Chinatown gang “The Green Dragons”, where they quickly rise up the ranks and draw the attention of the city cops.  Martin Scorsese—who remade Infernal Affairs with 2006’s The Departed—lends his name to the film as an executive producer, and it’s not hard to see why.  The trailer highlights a unique story with heavy stakes, told against the backdrop of the American Dream.  It looks to be an altogether promising feature, and one I’m curious to check out.

Hit the jump to check out the Revenge of the Green Dragons trailer and poster.  The film also stars Harry Shum Jr., Shuya Chang, Geoff Pierson, Billy Magnussen, and Ray LiottaRevenge of the Green Dragons will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be available exclusively on DirecTV starting September 11th, followed by a theatrical release in October.

Laika is on a roll with Coraline, ParaNorman and now The Boxtrolls.  It’s sometimes a slow roll because of their dedication to painstakingly crafting their films, but it’s worth it.  Stop-motion animation takes forever, and pulling it off in such a gorgeous manner must take even longer.  Now we have a new teaser and poster that bring us a little closer to the world we’ll be visiting in a little over six weeks.

First SON OF A GUN Images and Poster Featuring Ewan McGregor and Brenton Thwaites in the Aussie Crime Thriller

Just ahead of its debut as the Cinefest Oz’s opener, the first Son of a Gun images have landed online.  Julius Avery‘s directorial debut stars Brenton Thwaites (The Giver) as JR, a young man who becomes a protégé of Australia’s most notorious criminal Brendan Lynch (Ewan McGregor).  “Locked up for a minor crime, JR quickly learns the harsh realities of prison life. There is no survival guide. Keep your head down, do your time, get out. Protection – if you can get it – is paramount.”  These images don’t look like they show much of the lockup, but I’m still intrigued by the premise, and hopefully we’ll get to see the film in the U.S. soon.

Hit the jump to check out the Son of a Gun images and poster.  The film also stars Alicia Vikander, Jacek Koman, Matt Nable, and Tom BudgeSon of a Gun opens in Australia in October, and although A24 has the U.S. distribution rights, they haven’t set a domestic release date yet.

The Inmates Take Over in the STONEHEARST ASYLUM Trailer and Poster

stonehearst-asylum-trailer

One weird thing about Stonehearst Asylum is that I had never heard of the film before today, despite a cast featuring Michael Caine, Ben Kingsley and Kate Beckinsale, but suddenly it’s a real entity with a trailer and poster and everything. Of course that can happen when you’ve been operating under the name Eliza Graves (a film I had been aware of) for several years and haven’t announced a title change.  Brad Anderson (The Call) directed it from a screenplay by Joe Gangemi.  The film is based on the Edgar Allan Poe story The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.

In the film Jim Sturgess plays a recent medical school grad who takes a position at a mental institution soon finds himself taken with one of his colleagues, though he has no initial idea of a recent, horrifying staffing change.  The film also stars Brendan Gleeson and David Thewlis.  Hit the jump for the Stonehearst Asylum trailer and poster.
