With Rise of the Guardians opening this week, I recently got to see the finished film at DreamWorks Animation and it’s really well done.  Not only is the animation great to look at, it’s got a strong story that’s character driven and it doesn’t rely on stupid jokes.  In addition, unlike most superhero films that spend half the time introducing characters by explaining their origin and showing off their powers, what’s fantastic about Rise of the Guardians is we join almost everyone in the middle of the story.  If you’re not familiar with the story, it  revolves around the rebellious Jack Frost (Chris Pine) teaming up with other mythical figures North aka Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), E. Aster Bunnyman aka Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), Tooth aka The Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), and the Sandman to battle the evil Pitch (Jude Law).  Here’s my video blog review and all our previous coverage.

To help promote the film, last week I got on the phone with Rise of the Guardians producer Guillermo del Toro.  We talked about how they didn’t do a typical origin story, the tone, the Puss in Boots sequel, Kung Fu Panda 3, his DreamWorks Animation directorial debut Trollhunters, Pacific Rim, the 3D conversion, when we’ll see the trailer, the Pacific Rim sequel, and so much more.  Hit the jump for what del Toro had to say.

Aster Bunnyman aka Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), Tooth aka The Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), and the Sandman (who appears to be a silent character) to battle the evil Pitch (Jude Law).  Early word on the film has been great, and I’m eager to see how much of executive producer Guillermo del Toro’s influence comes through in the finished film.

21 Films Submitted for Best Animated Feature Oscar Consideration

With the number of Academy screenings picking up and the holiday season fast approaching, we’re starting to get into the thick of awards season.  A full list of the animated films submitted for the Best Animated Feature Oscar consideration has now been unveiled, and it looks like we’ll see 21 films vie for the coveted trophy.  The films include the big studio releases like Brave, Frankenweenie, and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, as well as Studio Ghibli’s From Up on Poppy Hill and the adult-oriented A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman.

It’s been a strong year for animated features, and Pixar is in no way a lock to take home the trophy for Brave given the film’s fairly lukewarm reception. It’s probably safe to assume that Brave will be still be nominated, and I’d venture to say ParaNorman and the upcoming Wreck-It Ralph and Rise of the Guardians are also pretty good bets as well.  Hit the jump to check out the full list of animated films under Academy consideration, and be sure to leave your thoughts on the Best Animated Feature race in the comments.  Nominations for the 85th Academy Awards will be announced on January 10th.

With DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians opening November 21, we’ve been provided with a new featurette called “Making Dreamsand.”  In the video, you can see how the filmmakers were able to bring Sandman’s powers to life.

I got to see the finished film the other day at DreamWorks in Glendale and it’s really well done.  Not only is the animation great to look at, it’s got a strong story that’s character driven and it doesn’t rely on stupid jokes.  In addition, unlike most films that spend half the time introducing characters by explaining their origin and showing off their powers, what’s fantastic about Rise of the Guardians is we join almost everyone in the middle of the story.  I wish more “origin” stories would do this.  Hit the jump for more.

A new character featurette has gone online for director Peter Ramsey’s Rise of the Guardians.  This one centers on the movie’s version of the Easter Bunny, an Australian anthropomorph named Bunnymund and voiced by Hugh Jackman.  The featurette is narrated by Alec Baldwin, who also lends his voice to North, the film’s version of Santa Claus.  If you missed it yesterday, there’s also a character featurette on Chris Pine’s Jack Frost.

Rise of the Guardians also features the voices of Isla Fisher, Jude Law and Dakota Goyo.  It opens on November 21st.  Hit the jump to see the new featurette for Rise of the Guardians.

A new featurette for DreamWorks Animation’s holiday-centered film Rise of the Guardians has been released.  The story revolves around the rebellious Jack Frost (Chris Pine) teaming up with other mythical figures North aka Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), E. Aster Bunnyman aka Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), Tooth aka The Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), and the Sandman (who appears to be a silent character) to battle the evil Pitch (Jude Law).  This featurette focuses on the character of Jack Frost, who acts as an audience surrogate in the film as he’s being inaugurated into the world of the Guardians.  Though I’ve heard some disappointing things about William Joyce’s source novel, the visuals still look gorgeous and I’m eager to see how the magical story unfolds on the big screen.

New 90-Second TV Spot for RISE OF THE GUARDIANS

A new extended TV spot for DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians has landed online. I was quite taken with the film’s first trailer that played up the magical tone of the story, but this TV spot leans on the more DreamWorks-y humor aspects of the pic, which are a tad less appealing.  Nevertheless, I’m still keen on the story and Guillermo del Toro’s involvement as executive producer is most definitely a good sign.

Hit the jump to watch the 90-second TV spot.  Rise of the Guardians opens in 3D on November 21st.

Guillermo del Toro Talks RISE OF THE GUARDIANS and PINOCCHIO; Hopes to Begin Voice Recording in Jan 2013 and Ron Perlman Will Play Stromboli

Guillermo-del-Toro-Pacific-Rim-interview-slice

As most of you know, I recently did an epic hour-long video interview with director Guillermo del Toro, and every day this week I’m posting part of it.  For today’s installment I’ve got del Toro talking about DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians and co-directing the 3D stop-motion animated iteration of Pinocchio with Mark Gustafson.  Here’s some of the highlights from what he said:

  • Rise of the Guardians is the first DreamWorks Animation film that del Toro was able to work on from inception.  He came into Puss in Boots in the middle of production.
  • Del Toro and the other people involved were giggling when they watched the opening to Guardians because they couldn’t believe they got away with putting “a dark, moody, and poetic piece” in a big studio movie.
  • The images that have been released for Pinocchio are from when Gris Grimly was in charge of production, so del Toro is going to redesign some of the characters now that he’s co-directing. However, the character of Pinocchio will remain the same.
  • They’ve already started puppet construction on Pinocchio and del Toro now has to get Nick Cave to start writing the songs for the film.
  • He hopes to begin voice recording by January or February of 2013.
  • The script is in its fourth or fifth draft, and del Toro has to do one more pass himself then they’ll start casting the film.
  • His dream casting is to have Tom Waits as Geppetto.
  • Ron Perlman will play a character named Mangiafuoco, who in the Disney version was called Stromboli.

Comic-Con: DreamWorks Animation Panel Debuts Footage from THE CROODS, Reveals Inspiration for RISE OF THE GUARDIANS, Confirms KUNG FU PANDA 3

The DreamWorks Animation panel at Comic-Con 2012 featured chief creative officer Bill Damashke, James Baxter (supervising animator on The Croods), Tom McGrath (director of the Madagascar series), and Patrick Hanenberger (production designer on Rise of the Guardians).  The panel started with a clip reel  of highlights from the DreamWorks filmography, from Shrek to Kung Fu Panda to How to Train Your Dragon.  Given the panel members, the reel and the discussion shifted mainly to Madagascar 3 (currently in theaters), Rise of the Guardians (in theaters November 21), and The Croods (coming March 2013).  The Rise of the Guardians section was nothing you haven’t already seen in this trailer, but the Croods footage was brand new, and it looks very interesting.  Hit the jump for more.
