IRON MAN 3 News: Jon Favreau to Return as Happy Hogan, Adds “Firepower” with Ashley Hamilton

We recently reported that Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) would be joining Tom Hiddleston as a baddie in Thor 2, so Iron Man 3 went ahead and added their own firepower.  In this case, “Firepower” is actually the villain that Ashley Hamilton (Sunset Beach) is in talks to play.  In the Marvel universe, Hamilton’s character was the pilot of a “power suit” prototype built by the government (likely, S.H.I.E.L.D.) under the codename “Project: Firepower.”  And we all know that, once you’ve strapped on a suit of battle armor, it doesn’t take too long before you challenge Tony Stark/Iron Man himself (Robert Downey Jr.).  Also returning, in a producer capacity, will be Jon Favreau.  But it looks like fans will be able to see the Iron Man director on screen as well.  Hit the jump for more.

Now that convention season is officially upon us, it seems appropriate to turn our sights to the most anticipated of all conventions: the national box convention.  That’s right my friends, Sir Ben Kingsley (Hugo) and Mark Duplass (Safety Not Guaranteed) will star in the indie pic, Convention, a sci-fi comedy centered around a box convention, at which an intrepid inventor (Duplass) premieres his creation: a five-sided box.  His revolutionary design seems destined to turn the world of folded boxes on its end until  he learns that his production process alters the space-time continuum.  Commercial director Justin Reardon will make his feature debut in Convention, with a script from Christopher Painter.  Hit the jump for more on Convention.

Harrison Ford reportedly called Ender’s Game, “one of the most emotional science fiction movies he has ever seen.”  If you’re a fan of Orson Scott Card’s award-winning novel, this article should let you breathe a little easier about the upcoming Gavin Hood adaptation.  While I was a bit leery about Hood’s attachment to my beloved property (see X-Men Origins: Wolverine), the Ender’s Game production blog has been shedding some interesting light on the filmmaker’s approach.  Hood and producer Roberto Orci (Star Trek) really seem to get the gist of the novel; that should elicit a sigh of relief followed quickly by a jolt of excitement from fans.  Orci recently participated in a Q&A on the blog in which he commented on the tone of the picture, the relationship between Colonel Hyrum Graff (Harrison Ford) and Ender (Asa Butterfield), as well as his favorite scenes.

Ender’s Game tells the story of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin, a young boy sent away to Battle School to hone his military skills and, hopefully, save the world from an impending alien invasion.  Also starring Abigail Breslin, Sir Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Nonso Anozie and Viola Davis, the picture opens November 1st, 2013.  We’ve also got some images from the production, so hit the jump to check it out!

IRON MAN 3 Lands Rebecca Hall as Female Lead

iron-man-3-rebecca-hall

Disney and Marvel have tapped Rebecca Hall (The Prestige) for the female lead of Iron Man 3.  The powers that be have moved quickly to initiate talks with Hall, as the previous frontrunner for the role, Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life), turned them down only yesterday, citing scheduling issues.  All the better for Hall, who can prepare for her role as a “sexy scientist” who rivals Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in intelligence.  The third installment will feature the return of Downey Jr. after his scene-stealing turn in The Avengers, along with Gwyneth Paltrow and Don CheadleGuy Pearce will join the fun and Sir Ben Kingsley is on board to play the villain.  Production on the Shane Black-directed Iron Man 3 starts this month in North Carolina before heading off to China en route to a May 3rd, 2013 release date.  Hit the jump for more on Hall’s role and the overall plot of Iron Man 3.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator has released a few images of Megan Fox and Anna Faris to drum up interest for their May 16th release date.  Having been buried under coverage of some sort of blockbuster superhero movie, The Dictator will have to pull a few more tricks out of his sleeve to grab headlines.  We’ve already seen the trailer, the opening of the film, a poster for General Aladeen’s (Cohen) visit to New York and the spilling of Kim Jong-Il’s ashes on the red carpet. The Dictator also boasts a solid supporting cast with John C. Reilly, Sir Ben Kingsley, B.J. Novak and J.B. Smoove. But, pictures of Megan Fox and Anna Faris certainly don’t hurt.  Hit the jump to check them out along with a few other actors from The Dictator.

An incredibly solid cast has been lined up for the crime thriller Cut BankDeadline reports that Armie Hammer, Sir Ben Kingsley, John Malkovich, Michael Sheen and Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) will lead the thriller, based on a Black List script by Roberto Patino.  Television director Matt Shakman (Mad Men, House) will make his feature directorial debut on the project, which takes place in Cut Bank, Montana.  The story centers on “a young auto mechanic and former high school football star who wants to get the hell out of this tiny town frozen in time.  His attempt to do so sets in motion a series of events that will change his life, and the life of Cut Bank, forever.”

Presumably Hammer will be playing the protagonist, but no details are given on what roles the other actors will take on.  I have to say, though, that this cast is incredibly encouraging and I look forward to hearing more about the project.  Hammer is currently filming The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp, and Sir Ben Kingsley has nabbed himself a handful of high profile roles as of late including Ender’s Game and the villain in Iron Man 3.  Production on Cut Bank begins this fall.

With only about four weeks left before Iron Man 3 begins shooting, some casting additions are still being made.  Not only has the great Sir Ben Kingsley come on board in a villainous capacity, but the charismatic Guy Pearce is reportedly adding his talent to the Marvel movie.  Now, the latest reports have Jessica Chastain back on track to join the threequel.  Her role is purportedly that of a sexy scientist who rivals Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in intelligence.  Chastain was previously thought to be in the mix for the role before scheduling issues complicated matters.  With her film The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers pushed back, it looks like Chastain will be joining Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and possibly Scarlett Johansson for Iron Man 3. New Images from ENDER’S GAME Production Blog Include First Look at Ender’s Monitor

Inventions dreamed up in science fiction novels have preempted the availability of practical technology numerous times (ie submarines, military drones, the internet); Ender’s Game is no exception.  Author Orson Scott Card wrote about multimedia tablets, the power held by the written word on the internet and electronic monitoring devices in his 1985 novel.  These things are, more or less, commonplace today.  So it’s fitting that these new images from the Ender’s Game film production show this technology not as obtrusive, but as practical.  One of the understated but necessary devices is “the monitor,” an implant that connects Andrew “Ender” Wiggin to his overseers.  We’ve got a first look at that piece of technology, as well as more images from the production for you to check out.  Ender’s Game, starring Asa Butterfield, Abigail Breslin, Harrison Ford and Sir Ben Kingsley and directed by Gavin Hood, opens November 1st, 2013.  Hit the jump to check out the new images.

The release of The Avengers is now less than a month away, but Marvel is gearing up to start production on their first post-Avengers pic, Iron Man 3.  Though little is known regarding the plot, Marvel and director Shane Black have apparently settled on their villain.  Variety reports that Sir Ben Kingsley is now in final negotiations to take on the antagonist role in the third Iron Man pic.  Though Iron Man and Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau had been setting up the Mandarin as the villain for Iron Man 3, insiders apparently denied that Kingsley would be playing the brilliant and wealthy Chinese scientist.  So who exactly will he be playing?  Hit the jump for more.

I did it, folks. I came, saw, and survived yet another Black Friday. This year’s destination of choice was my local Best Buy and I sat outside in moderately chilly temperatures for around six hours for one lonely purpose: to buy things for cheaper than what they were the day before. That’s right, I rocked Best Buy to the tune of two seasons of television on DVD for a combined $15. Now, I know some of you reading this may be thinking, “Wait, Jason waited outside for six hours so that he could buy two seasons of TV on DVD?”. My answer: a resounding “Yes!”. It’s the small things, people. The small things.

But enough of my Black Friday exploits. In this week’s “Top 5″ installment you’ll find interviews for this weekend’s openers The Muppets and Hugo, new images and plot details from The Dark Knight Rises, new images from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and Gary Oldman and Colin Firth addressing Akira and Oldboy remake rumors. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

Opening tomorrow is Martin Scorsese‘s first 3D film, Hugo.  Based on Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret, the film stars Asa Butterfield as a young boy secretly living in a train station in 1931 Paris.  As he attempts to piece together a puzzle that he’d been working on with his father, the results transform not only Hugo, but everyone he comes in contact with.  The impressive cast also includes Chloe Grace Moretz, Sacha Baron Cohen, Sir Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Ray Winstone, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory, Richard Griffiths, Frances de la Tour, Emily Mortimer, and Michael Stuhlbarg. You can watch a trailer here.

During my interview with Sir Ben Kingsley (who plays George Melies), he talked about how he got involved in the project and the kind of research he did.  In addition, with Kingsley working on Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator, he talked about how he approaches comedy differently than drama and revealed that he plays “the chief of security and the procurer of women.”  Hit the jump to watch.

Luke Evans Exclusive Interview TAMARA DREWE; Plus Updates on Tarsem’s IMMORTALS, THE THREE MUSKETEERS and VIVALDI

In the present-day English countryside comedy Tamara Drewe, directed by Stephen Frears and based on the popular Posy Simmonds graphic novel of the same name, Welsh actor Luke Evans plays Andy Cobb, a rugged, working-class local who works as a gardener and handyman for the Stonefield Farm writers’ retreat. As a boy, he lived in the neighboring Winnards Farm, until his hard-up family sold it to the wealthy Drewe family from London, which includes their daughter, Tamara Drewe (Gemma Arterton), who has returned as a beautiful and sexy writer, after having had some plastic surgery help. Although he resents her presence, Andy is still fascinated by his former teenage flame and wonders whether he should try to win her back.

In this exclusive interview with Collider, Luke Evans talked about jumping at the chance to work with Stephen Frears, playing a character that he identified so closely with, and reuniting with Gemma Arterton, whom he had previously met when they both worked on Clash of the Titans. He also spoke of playing Zeus in Immortals, for director Tarsem, sword-fighting as Aramis in The Three Musketeers, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, possibly playing a psychopath in a horror film and taking on Vivaldi, opposite Jessica Biel and Sir Ben Kingsley (who had not yet been announced as part of the project). It turns out Donald Glover isn’t the only actor spearheading a grassroots campaign to get on board a major film franchise.  Sir Ben Kingsley came all the way from England, made a cup of tea, and grabbed his gun to film an audition video for Michael Bay.  It seems the Oscar-winning actor wants to join John Malkovich, France McDormand, and Ken Jeong as a new castmember on Transformers 3.  The silly clip is likely worth thirty seconds of your time, so check it out after the jump.

Sir Ben Kingsley Interview PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME; Plus He Talks About THE WACKNESS and Scorsese’s THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET

With Walt Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time getting released this weekend, a few days ago I got to do a phone interview with one of the best actors in the world: Sir Ben Kingsley.  As most of you have seen the trailers and know what the film is about, I’m going to keep this intro brief.  But if you’re not familiar, here’s a bunch of clips from the movie and the synopsis.

Anyway, since every actor promoting their movie does a lot of interviews on the same day and most are right after the other, I decided to start off the interview by talking about The Wackness.  As some of you might remember, I spoke to Ben Kingsley at Sundance a few years ago about The Wackness as it was a film I truly loved and his work as Dr. Squires was completely out of character.  Thankfully, he seemed to remember me and we reminisced about the film.  Of course we also talked about Prince of Persia and he also told me how he’s currently preparing to work with Martin Scorsese again on his first 3D movie called The Invention of Hugo Cabret.  It’s a great interview so hit the jump to check it out:
