Fox Searchlight has released the first clip from Oldboy director Park Chan-wook’s English-language debut, Stoker.  The film centers on a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle (Matthew Goode) while mourning the death of her father (Dermot Mulroney).  The majority of this clip is actually silent, as we’re treated to a quiet scene between Wasikowska and Goode’s characters.  An overall air of creepiness is prevalent, and it goes hand-in-hand with Chan-wook’s precision photography.  Matt caught the film at Sundance and enjoyed it, describing it as “an unnerving, slow-burn mystery-thriller that delves into a bloodline destined to shed blood” in his review.

Sundance 2013: STOKER Review

In Chan-wook Park‘s Stoker, the hunt is more rewarding than the kill.  Park has beautifully crafted an unnerving, slow-burn mystery-thriller that delves into a bloodline destined to shed blood.  In his English-language debut, Park takes his immaculate yet eerie style, and uses it to enhance a relatively simple tale of a disturbed girl who begins a bizarre and disturbing relationship with her recently-discovered uncle.  Through Park’s lens and the tremendous performances of stars Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode, Stoker may not cut deep, but it slashes hard.

New STOKER Trailer Gets Weird, Sexy and Murderous

While the Sundance crowd is enjoying Park Chan-wook’s Stoker in its entirety, the rest of the internet is being treated to a new trailer.  This sixty-second cut plays up the film’s weirdness, eroticism and outright violence in time with an overt bit of music that’s just as strange.  It’s reminiscent of the trailers for Requiem for a Dream and the more recent Savages from Oliver Stone.  It’s a nice tonal introduction for a film from the director of Oldboy.

Starring Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman and Matthew Goode, Stoker opens in limited release on March 1st.  Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.

The first clips have landed online for two Sundance 2013 premieres: Chan-wook Park’s Stoker, starring Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska, and Francesca Gregorini’s Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes, starring Jessica Biel, Kaya Scodelario and Alfred Molina.  Both movies deal with issues of motherhood, though the first clip from Stoker reveals Kidman’s character as rather aggressively unstable while Biel’s character is merely a dead-ringer for the protag’s own dead mother.  Check out both clips after the jump (be forewarned: both clips are annoyingly set to auto-play).

New Promo Trailer and Poster for STOKER Draws a Captivating Portrait

One of my most anticipated films of next spring is Park Chan-Wook‘s Stoker.  The film centers on a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle (Matthew Goode) while mourning the death of her father (Dermot Mulroney).  The promo trailer shows the creation of the eye-catching first poster, and is set to the song “Becomes The Color” by Emily Wells, which will play over the film’s closing credits.  It’s a creepy song, and while it doesn’t work quite as well as the music used in the international trailer (“Dirge” by Death in Vegas), it gets the job done.

Dermot Mulroney Talks TRADE OF INNOCENTS, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, STOKER, and JOBS

by     Posted 1 year, 318 days ago

dermot mulroney trade of innocents

The indie drama Trade of Innocents shines a spotlight on the horrific and brutal realities of child exploitation, all over the world. Alex (Dermot Mulroney) has recently moved to Southeast Asia with his wife, Claire (Mira Sorvino), so that he can investigate human trafficking while his wife volunteers in an aftercare shelter for rescued girls. Still struggling with their own grief after losing a child years earlier, they both become very passionate about restoring freedom and dignity to those who are directly affected by such atrocities.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Dermot Mulroney talked about how he came to the role, why the subject matter became so important to everyone involved, the research he did to bring his character to life, working with co-star Mira Sorvino, and how he hopes he film will raise awareness of such a critical issue, around the world. He also talked about his current role in August: Osage County, adapted from the Broadway play, his roles in the upcoming films Stoker (from director Chan-wook Park) and Jobs (about the life of Steve Jobs), whether he’d consider doing work on television, and how he’s more focused on acting right now than trying his hand at directing again. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

International Trailer for STOKER Starring Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode, and Nicole Kidman

An international trailer for Park Chan-wook‘s Stoker has gone online.  Like the first trailer that debuted last week, this one is dark, creepy, unsettling, and absolutely fascinating.  The film centers on a young girl (Mia Wasikowska) who encounters her mysterious uncle (Matthew Goode) while mourning the death of her father (Dermot Mulroney).  The plot seems to have a mix of Lolita and The Professional, although it’s not paid assassinations as much as serial killing (money makes all the difference!).  There are also some strange layers going on between the girl and her mother (Nicole Kidman).  Even though I’ve now seen two trailers for the movie, I still have no idea what to expect, and that makes me very excited to see it.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Jacki Weaver, Lucas Till, and Alden EhrenreichStoker opens on March 1st, 2013.
