Welcome to 2013, folks. If you’re reading this it means that you survived the Mayan Apocalypse, the first Dick Clark-less New Year’s Rockin’ Eve celebration in like four decades, likely some sort of mandatory holiday time with your extended family, and incessant political jabber about some sort of “fiscal cliff”, all in a matter of about two weeks. Congratulations on a job well done. In spite of all these accomplishments, though, odds are you still haven’t spent any part of 2013 hanging out with Arnold Schwarzenegger and his tank. So, to this point, our Dave Trumbore still wins 2013.

All tank envy aside, let’s keep our heads up and focus on the first Top 5 installment of the new year. This week’s recap includes Brendan’s editorial plea for giving 48fps the old college try, Justice League rumors, Matt’s Warm Bodies set visit and ensuing zombie transformation, news of Jay-Z being brought on to score Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby, and the results of our first ever readers poll that asked for your top movies of 2012. Brief recaps and links to all of the above are dying for your attention after the jump.

Matt Visits the Set of WARM BODIES and Gets Turned into a Zombie

Being undead isn’t so bad.  Your clothes are filthy, you could probably do with a little more sun, and the quality of conversation is somewhat diminished, but I didn’t mind being a zombie for a day.  I was given this opportunity when Summit Entertainment decided to fly me up to Montreal to the set of Warm Bodies, the new film from director Jonathan Levine (50/50).  The film follows R (Nicholas Hoult), a zombie who falls in love with the non-zombie Julie (Teresa Palmer) after eating her boyfriend’s brains.

I’ve been on a few set visits, but for Warm Bodies, Summit invited me and my fellow movie journalists to be zombie extras.  In addition to interviewing Levine, Hoult, Palmer, co-star Rob Corddry, and producer Bruna Papandrea, we got to go through the zombification process without the nasty biting-and-dying part.  Hit the jump to read about my visit to the set of Warm Bodies.

Teresa Palmer Talks Her Favorite Zombie Movie, Having a Relationship with a Zombie, the Influence of ROMEO AND JULIET & More on the Set of WARM BODIES

In October 2011, I was lucky enough to visit the set of Jonathan Levine‘s Warm Bodies.  The film follows R (Nicholas Hoult), a zombie who falls in love with the non-zombie Julie (Teresa Palmer) after eating her boyfriend’s brains.  Judging by the trailers, it looks like Levine has crafted a sweet, funny rom-zom-com.

In addition to getting zombified on the set, I got the chance to interview Palmer.  We talked about the scene they were filming that day, why R doesn’t eat her, working with John Malkovich (who plays Julie’s father), her favorite zombie movie, the influence of Romeo and Juliet, playing against actors who have a restricted range of emotions since they’re playing zombies, and much more.  Hit the jump to check out the interview.  Warm Bodies opens February 1st.

Summit Entertainment has released five new posters for director Jonathan Levine’s zombie love story Warm Bodies.  The film stars Nicholas Hoult as a zombie named “R” who starts to act more human than zombie when he falls in love with Julie (Teresa Palmer).  Both of the film’s two trailers have been really promising, and these posters play into the tongue-in-cheek tone that Levine seems to have adopted for the film.  Though zombie movies/tv shows/books are a dime a dozen these days, Summit looks to have something special with Warm Bodies.

A new trailer for director Jonathan Levine’s (50/50) zombie love story Warm Bodies has been released.  The film stars Nicholas Hoult as a zombie named “R” who starts to act more human than zombie when he falls in love with Julie (Teresa Palmer).  The film’s excellent first trailer played up the quirky love story angle, and this new trailer is a bit more action-oriented.  Levine looks to have struck a nice balance between the film’s light-hearted “indie” sensibilities and the more visually arresting zombie apocalypse premise, and we see bits of promising new footage with this 60-second trailer.

The first trailer for the zombie love story Warm Bodies has been released.  Directed by Jonathan Levine (50/50), the film stars Nicholas Hoult as “R” a zombie who falls in love with Julie (Teresa Palmer) and starts to act more human than zombie.  This trailer is incredibly charming, promising some really fun performances from the whole cast.  I’m also encouraged by how fresh this looks, which is saying something given the saturation of the undead across every media platform nowadays.  Levine’s 50/50 was a fantastic mix of humor and heart, and it looks like he might have successfully struck a similar tone with a cast full of zombies.

captain america 2 winter soldier

It’s lonely in the future for Captain America, aka Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), so Marvel has reportedly added a new love interest for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Details are scarce as to the actual character and whether or not she’ll appear in future Marvel movies, as the studio has a habit of signing talent to multi-picture deals. What is known is that the role is hotly contested, with some of today’s top female talent vying for it. Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Alison Brie (Community) and Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey) are in the mix. Hit the jump to see who else is competing for Rogers’ affections and to see what Marvel character might make a cameo appearance in the Cap sequel.

We’ve got a few exciting casting stories to share this evening.  First up, though many believed her character would be left out of the sequel, Deadline reports that Kat Dennings is indeed returning for Thor: The Dark World.  Details are thin, but apparently her role of Darcy Lewis has been expanded for the follow-up opposite Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth.  I thought Dennings’ comic relief was spot-on in Thor, so this comes as welcome news for the follow-up.  Production is set to begin imminently with director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) at the helm, Christopher Eccelston as the new baddie, and Tom Hiddleston returning as that pesky Loki.

Hit the jump for casting news concerning Terrence Malick’s upcoming drama Knight of Cups and the Arnold Schwarzenegger thriller Ten.

Armie Hammer, Sir Ben Kingsley, John Malkovich, Michael Sheen and Teresa Palmer to Lead CUT BANK

An incredibly solid cast has been lined up for the crime thriller Cut BankDeadline reports that Armie Hammer, Sir Ben Kingsley, John Malkovich, Michael Sheen and Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) will lead the thriller, based on a Black List script by Roberto Patino.  Television director Matt Shakman (Mad Men, House) will make his feature directorial debut on the project, which takes place in Cut Bank, Montana.  The story centers on “a young auto mechanic and former high school football star who wants to get the hell out of this tiny town frozen in time.  His attempt to do so sets in motion a series of events that will change his life, and the life of Cut Bank, forever.”

Presumably Hammer will be playing the protagonist, but no details are given on what roles the other actors will take on.  I have to say, though, that this cast is incredibly encouraging and I look forward to hearing more about the project.  Hammer is currently filming The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp, and Sir Ben Kingsley has nabbed himself a handful of high profile roles as of late including Ender’s Game and the villain in Iron Man 3.  Production on Cut Bank begins this fall.

Jonathan Levine’s Zombie Movie WARM BODIES Pushed Back to February 1, 2013

One of the projects I was most looking forward to this year was 50/50 director Jonathan Levine’s zombie love story Warm Bodies. The pic stars Nicholas Hoult as “R” a zombie who falls in love with Julie (Teresa Palmer) after he eats her boyfriend’s brains and absorbs his memories. Besides the intriguing love story aspect, the film also features a military revolt led by John Malkovich. The film was slated to open this August, but Summit has decided to push the release date back to February 1st, 2013, per Box Office Mojo.

It’s disappointing that we’ll have to wait longer for the film, but maybe a pre-Valentine’s Day release makes more sense given the romance aspect. Either way, I’m excited to see Levine’s next directorial effort as I thought 50/50 was one of the best films of last year. Warm Bodies currently has no competition on the February 1st date, but the Tom Cruise action pic One Shot hits theaters one week later. Hoult isn’t having the best luck with starring roles lately, as Warner Bros. recently pushed Bryan Singer‘s big-budget fantasy Jack the Giant Killer back to 2013 as well. Nevertheless, the guy’s poised to have a very good 2013.

This past week brought us a story that is near and dear to me. While I briefly give my own thoughts regarding DC Comics’ Watchmen prequel comic series after the jump, I want to use the “Top 5′s” opening paragraph space to invite readers to voice/type their own opinions on the announcement in the comments section. As a fervent fan of the series, I’m always interested to hear fellow fans’ take on Watchmen adaptations, prequels, and the like. So, with that said, what do you think? Does the creative talent involved interest you? Is it the best idea ever? The worst? Somewhere in between? Sound off in the comments.

In addition to DC’s Before Watchmen announcement, this installment of the “Top 5″ includes interviews with the cast and director of superhero/found-footage pic Chronicle, a “What If?” look at a 16-Bit Breaking Bad RPG, ten things to know about Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, and Sundance 2012 video interviews with Bradley Cooper, Paul Dano and more. A brief recap and link to each follows after the jump.

Teresa Palmer Talks WISH YOU WERE HERE and WARM BODIES at Sundance 2012

Teresa Palmer WISH YOU WERE HERE and WARM BODIES interview slice

Kieran Darcy-Smith’s debut feature, Wish You Were Here, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.  Starring Joel Edgerton, Teresa Palmer, Felicity Price and Antony Starr, the film is about four friends (two couples) who embark on a carefree holiday in Cambodia, but only three of them return home.  As the film unfolds, we start to learn more about what happened on the trip and how one of them might know more than they’re letting on.

Shortly after seeing the film, I sat down with Palmer for an exclusive interview.  During our extended conversation we talked about what it means to premiere at Sundance, how the project came together, what the film is about and who she plays, filming in Cambodia, and how the project changed during the writing process.  In addition, we talked about karaoke, video games, and director Jonathan Levine‘s Warm Bodies.  Hit the jump to watch.

I have to say that I can’t wait to check out Steven Soderbergh‘s actioner Haywire. Everything I’ve seen from it thus far has looked great and the positivity pouring out from early reviews only supports my belief that the entire pic will deliver. Whether it be the stellar cast, the proclaimed breakout performance from Gina Carano, or Soderbergh’s top-notch action sequences, I fully expect to be talking about Haywire right here again next week in a little “Before & After” discussion. In the meantime…

…This week’s “Top 5″ brings you some new details regarding the long-gestating Star Wars live-action television series, Contraband interviews with Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi, and more, the first official images from Jonathan Levine‘s (50/50) Warm Bodies, a “Cinemath” feature that analyzes the 2011 box office, and all of our coverage from the 2011 Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter Press Tour.
