Opening this weekend is writer/director Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy.  For those unfamiliar with the franchise reboot, this time around, a government task force led by Edward Norton‘s character is assassinating all their genetically-modified assets to prevent another Bourne situation.  However, one member of the program, Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), manages to escape with a scientist (Rachel Weisz), and the two go on the run for their lives.  The film also stars Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Albert Finney, Stacy Keach, Scott Glenn, Corey Stoll, and Donna Murphy.  For more on the film, here’s five clips.

At the recent Los Angeles press day, I landed an exclusive interview with producer Frank Marshall (insane resume here).  During our wide ranging conversation, we talked about  making The Bourne Legacy, deleted scenes, extended cuts, test screenings, and more.  In addition, since Marshall has produced so many awesome movies, we also talked about how close Who Framed Roger Rabbit came to getting a sequel, the likelihood of Indiana Jones 5 happening, Jurassic Park 3D and Jurassic Park 4, whether anyone has talked about rebooting the Back to the Future movies, the amazing Nike Back to the Future sneakers, The Secret Life of Houdini, the remake of Tell No One, and so much more.  Hit the jump for what he had to say.

Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton Talk THE BOURNE LEGACY and Where the Franchise Could Go from Here

The Bourne Legacy is the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise, that this time exposes a darker layer of intrigue and a deeper mythology than anyone ever suspected. This time around, Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) is in a fight for his life, when his program because as much of a liability as Treadstone, after Jason Bourne’s public exposure threatens decades of research and development into the building of better soldiers.

During a press conference to promote the film’s August 10th release, co-stars Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz (who plays top-security research scientist Dr. Marta Shearing) and Edward Norton (who plays Ret. Col. Eric Byer, the man who built these programs) talked about where the franchise could be headed in the future, the challenges of this type of physical action, riding a motorcycle through the very crowded streets of Manila, shooting in the freezing cold, and staying focused on the work without thinking about how daunting the entire process is. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Five clips and over 15 new images from writer/director Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy have been released. It’s clear that there’s some timeline overlap between Legacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, so I’m eager to see how everything fits together in the finished film.

Yesteday, Universal released the first clip from The Bourne Legacy, and they’ve released another one today. The previous clip showed the two running away, and this clip shows them motorcycling away.  Writer-director Tony Gilroy looks like he’s done a good job of carrying over previous director Paul Greengrass‘ handheld kinetic style while still retaining the clarity of the set pieces.  The stunts look like they’ll be a lot of fun, but now I want to see how the great cast performs outside of chase scenes.

Hit the jump to check out the clip.  The film also stars Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Albert Finney, Stacy Keach, Scott Glenn, Corey Stoll, and Donna MurphyThe Bourne Legacy opens August 10th.

Even though it’s less than a month away, I keep forgetting The Bourne Legacy exists.  It’s not because I’m uninterested in the film.  It’s just positioned near the end of the summer, and has been overshadowed by some movie involving a crime fighter dressed as a rodent.  But with The Dark Knight Rises finally set to open on Friday, Universal is now beginning to remind audiences that there’s a new Jason Bourne aka “Aaron Cross” (Jeremy Renner) on the block.  The studio has released the first clip from the film, and it features a lot of running and screaming before finishing up with an awesome take down of a couple hapless cops.

Hit the jump to check out the clip.  The film also stars Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Albert Finney, Stacy Keach, Scott Glenn, Corey Stoll and Donna Murphy.  The Bourne Legacy opens August 10th.

New Posters for THE BOURNE LEGACY and CHASING MAVERICKS

A couple of new posters have hit the interwebs.  First up, Gallery 1988 has fashioned a limited edition print for The Bourne Legacy that will be available exclusively at Comic-Con.  Beginning Fridy, July 13th, this limited edition of 200.  No further information is given besides the instruction to follow @OperationIntel for more information on where to snag one of these, so best of luck.  It’s actually a pretty cool poster with a nice nod to the spy films of the 1960s.

Additionally, the first poster from the surfer film Chasing Mavericks (previously titled Of Men and Mavericks) has landed online.  Directed by Curtis Hanson, the film stars Gerard Butler as mentor to Moriarty (played by newcomer Jonny Weston), a soul surfer who made his name on the waves over Mavericks in Northern California.  Hit the jump to check out the posters.  The Bourne Legacy opens on August 10th, while Chasing Mavericks opens on October 26th.

3 New TV Spots for THE BOURNE LEGACY

Three new TV spots for The Bourne Legacy have gone online.  Despite the constant need to remind audiences that this is still a Bourne movie in lieu of Matt Damon’s absence, the footage actually looks pretty good.  It’s reassuring to know that Tony Gilroy, who scripted the three previous Bourne movies, is taking over the franchise.  I’m a fan of his past directorial efforts (Michael Clayton, Duplicity), and hopefully he can maintain the character-centered tone of the other Bourne films while providing a fresh and engaging story that stands on its own.  This footage hammers home the idea that Jeremy Renner’s character is some kind of genetic supersoldier, and I’m eager to see how Legacy‘s story plays out within the universe of the first three films.

THE BOURNE LEGACY Sequel May Team Jeremy Renner with Matt Damon

Fans of the Bourne movies may finally get to see which action star is better: Matt Damon or Jeremy Renner.  In a recent interview, The Bourne Legacy producer Frank Marshall commented about a potential follow-up film as follows:

“My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up.”

While that may certainly be an unstoppable duo (or a clash of titans, depending upon their alliance), audiences will have to wait until August 10th to see Renner step into Damon’s shoes.  The Bourne Legacy was recently pushed back a week due to fear of competing for audiences with Total Recall and, more likely, a desire to step out from under the shadow of The Dark Knight Rises. Hit the jump for more from Marshall, Renner and director Tony Gilroy, in addition to new images of Renner as Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy.

TOP 5: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Set Visit, LES MISERABLES, THE BOURNE LEGACY, ROCK OF AGES Set Visit, Limited Paper #1

Every so often, there is a story throughout the week that finds itself right on the cusp of Top 5 inclusion before ultimately missing the cut. For whatever reason, today I feel compelled to give one of these said stories an “Honorable Mention” tip of the cap. This write-up from a few days back regarding the chronology of Quentin Tarantino‘s filmography and how Inglorious Basterds influences the entire lineage of his “movieverse” is one that I found incredibly cool and definitely worth your time (even if we’re not bestowing upon it the career-validating honor of making the Top 5).

As for those stories that did make this week’s cut, we have a plethora of coverage from Steve’s visit to the set of The Dark Knight Rises, the first trailer, poster, and new images from Les Miserables, a new trailer for The Bourne Legacy, more set visit goodness for Rock of Ages, and the first installment of our movie poster lovefest column, Limited Paper. A brief recap and link to each awaits.

New Trailer for THE BOURNE LEGACY

A new trailer for The Bourne Legacy has gone online. Rather than just a reboot, this feels like a direct sequel with Jason Bourne’s actions from the previous films creating the conflict for the new movie.  This time around, a government task force led by Edward Norton‘s character is assassinating all their genetically-modified assets to prevent another Bourne situation.  However, one member of the program (Jeremy Renner) manages to escape with a scientist (Rachel Weisz), and the two go on the run for their lives.  There are some cool stunts in the trailer, but I want to see more of the characters’ personalities rather than just the conspiracy/chase angle.

A new image from Tony Gilroy‘s The Bourne Legacy has gone online.  We had previously seen set photos of co-star Rachel Weisz, but this is the first official image of Weisz’ mysterious character, Marta, and we see her standing next to the new Jason Bourne (Jeremy Renner).  Wesiz is tight-lipped about her character details, telling EW “What am I allowed to say? I think almost nothing at all.”  I didn’t really think the veil of super-secrecy extended to a Bourne movie (it’s not like she’s playing a character we already know from some other medium), but perhaps she has a more complex role than simply a love-interest who gets swept up in Bourne’s intrigue (a la Franke Potente in The Bourne Identity).

Hit the jump to check out the image.  The film also stars Edward Norton, Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Albert Finney, Stacy Keach, Scott Glenn, Corey Stoll and Donna Murphy.  The Bourne Legacy opens August 3rd.

While Universal Pictures skipped CinemaCon/ShoWest the past couple of years, they more than made up for it with the best presentation of 2012.   While all the studios have great-looking movies arriving in 2012 and 2013, I wanted to see every single movie Universal talked about at CinemaCon  In addition, not only did they bring in the movie stars and directors, they world premiered footage from nine movies including Les Miserables, Ted, Savages, This is 40, R.I.P.D., Oblivion, The Bourne Legacy, Snow White and the Huntsman, and 47 Ronin.  In addition, they made sure to remind attendees that while filming hasn’t started on Fast and Furious 6 (the working title), it’s arriving next May, and Despicable Me 2 opens in July.  For what I thought about all the movies plus a complete video blog recap, hit the jump.

International Trailer for THE BOURNE LEGACY

A Japanese trailer for The Bourne Legacy has gone online.  It’s not incredibly different from the US trailer we saw previously, but there are a couple bits of new footage and some more looks at Edward Norton that make it worth a gander.  Writer/director Tony Gilroy recently talked about how the film sets itself apart from the previous three films while maintaining a strong throughline, adding that “what happens in Ultimatum is really the spark that’s blowing open the door to this movie because the Jason Bourne story is exploding out into the public.”  I’m excited to see how Gilroy executes this “separate but connected” film and how Jeremy Renner’s character differs from Jason Bourne.  I really liked the US trailer and I think the cast is swell, so hopefully Legacy delivers.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Rachel Weisz, Stacy Keach, Oscar Isaac, Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn, and Scott GlennThe Bourne Legacy opens on August 3rd.
