The line-up for this year’s Toronto International Film Festival has been announced and it is a doozy.  The festival will play host to some of the year’s biggest world premieres including Rian Johnson‘s Looper (which will be the festival’s opening night film), The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer‘s Cloud Atlas, Ben Affleck‘s Argo, David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook, Derek Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines, Joss Whedon‘s Much Ado About Nothing, Noah Baumbach‘s Frances Ha, and Neil Jordan‘s Byzantium.  Films making their International/North American debuts (which means that they’ll like show up at the Venice Film Festival first) include Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder, Joe Wright‘s Anna Karenina, Robert Redford‘s The Company You Keep, and Billy Bob Thornton‘s Jayne Mansfield’s Car.

The disaster drama The Impossible, the English-language debut of director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage), now finally has a U.S. release date.  Per Deadline, Lionsgate has slated the film for a December 21st release, pitting it against Judd Apatow’s This Is 40, the Tom Cruise-fronted Jack Reacher, and Kathryn Bigelow’s thriller Zero Dark Thirty.  That’s some formidable competition on the wide front, but The Impossible should benefit from the limited debut in New York and Los Angeles on that date.

The pic stars Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts as parents of a family caught in the tsunami that hit Thailand in 2004, with a story that promises “  “true-life terror is tempered by the unexpected displays of compassion, courage and simple kindness that Maria (Watts) and her family encounter during the darkest hours of their lives.”  The level of devastation on display in the film’s trailer is truly massive, and I’m interested in seeing how the drama plays out against the backdrop of this horrific catastrophe.

A batch of new posters have landed online.  Briefly:

• A new poster for director Joe Wright’s (Hanna) adaptation of Anna Karenina.  The visually stirring period pic stars Keira Knightley, Jude Law, and Aaron Johnson.  The film opens on November 9th.
• Two Spanish posters for The Impossible, the English-language debut of director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage), have gone online.  The film centers on the events surrounding the Tsunami of 2004 and stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor.  The film opens on
• An international poster for the stop-motion animated film ParaNorman, featuring the voices of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Casey Affleck and Anna Kendrick.  The film opens on August 17th.
• The first poster for the Sundance drama Hello I Must Be Going.  The film stars Melanie Lynskey as a recent divorcee who retreats to the Connecticut home of her parents and begins an affair.  The film opens in limited release on September 7th.

Around the holidays we posted a striking international teaser trailer for The Impossible, the English-language debut of director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage).  Warner Bros. has followed up with a full trailer, and though broader (and still dubbed in Spanish), it leaves just as much of an impression.  Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor star as the parents of a family caught in the tsunami that hit Thailand in 2004.  The mass destruction is on display here, but the official synopsis promises “true-life terror is tempered by the unexpected displays of compassion, courage and simple kindness that Maria (Watts) and her family encounter during the darkest hours of their lives.”  Watch the trailer after the break.

Summit has released images and synopses for their 2012 line-up.  We already showed you the first image from Warm Bodies, and now we have the first images from Gone starring Amanda Seyfried, Sinister starring Ethan Hawke, The Perks of Being a Wallflower starring Logan Lerman and Emma Watson, and Step Up 4 starring people you probably don’t know.  The studio has released synopses for all of their 2012 movies.  We don’t have images for every one of their films and some of the synopses are really just log-lines, but you’ll know more about these films than you did before.

The Impossible was present at the American Film Market in both 2010 and 2011, but we haven’t heard much outside of AFM.  Warner Bros. has released the first teaser trailer—it is stylish and striking and accomplishes everything you want from a teaser trailer.  Impressively, the teaser does all this while dubbed in Spanish.  The Impossible is the English-language debut of Juan Antonio Bayona, director of The Orphanage, which was a massive hit in Bayona’s homeland Spain.  So it makes sense that the first big promotional push is in Spanish.  Luckily for the rest of us, the disaster genre is a universal language.

Led by Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, The Impossible tells the story of a family caught in the tsunami that hit Thailand seven years ago today.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

We’ve got another batch of posters and synopses from the American Film Market, including promo posters and synopses for Tarzan 3D and The Impossible, as well as an official synopsis for the feature film adaptation of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The new adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic tale Tarzan comes in the form of a 3D animated adaptation. Reinhard Klooss (Animals United) is directing from a script that Klooss co-wrote with Jessica Postigo (The Mortal Instruments). Additionally, The Impossible comes from The Orphanage director J.A. Bayona and stars Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, and Tom Holland. The film tells the true story of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, as Watts races to find and save her family from the ensuing flood.

Finally, we’ve got the official synopsis for the feature film adaptation of the popular teen book series The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The 3D film stars Lily Collins as a girl who is transported to another world when she meets a mysterious half-angel known as a Shadowhunter. Hit the jump to see the promo posters and synopses.
