TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT Review

Do you remember the 80s?  Of course you do.  Everyone remembers the 80s even if you didn’t live through them.  It was pop-art made flesh and then made neon.  There were bright colors, exuberant clothes, and if your song didn’t feature at least one synthesizer, then it wasn’t worth listening to it.  We’ve been to the 80s and it’s tough to find a reason to go back.  Take Me Home Tonight certainly can’t find one and it drowns its affable leads and their charming performances in a sea of nostalgia and iconography.

Funny or Die: CROCODILE TEARS with Topher Grace and Dan Fogler

If you check out Take Me Home Tonight, you’ll notice that stars Topher Grace and Dan Fogler have great chemistry and comic timing.  But what you may not know, and what this new Funny or Die video illustrates, is that they don’t like being interrupted.  Some may see their reactions as disturbingly aggressive, but watching this funny video of them on the set of their upcoming totally-not-real movie Crocodile Tears, I can see that they’re just consummate professionals.

A couple week ago, I got the chance to interview Topher Grace and Teresa Palmer about their new movie Take Me Home Tonight.  The two were on a press tour promoting the film and I got to speak with them at Whiskey Park inside the Midtown W. Hotel in Atlanta.  Grace and Palmer have terrific chemistry in the film and I got to see that chemistry in person.  They spoke about taking the film around the country, sang each other’s praises, revealed some of the deleted scenes that will be on the Blu-ray, and reflected fondly about the music video where they spoofed 80s movies.  Take Me Home Tonight also marks Grace’s first film as a producer and I asked him what he had learned from the experience.

Topher Grace Exclusive Interview TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT

Topher Grace has an unusual name, but that hasn’t stopped him from becoming widely known. Perhaps the name has helped him in that regard, but I like to think his characters have propelled him into the spotlight. He broke out in the TV sitcom hit That ‘70s Show as Eric Forman, and now he is back with a retro film all about the glorious 1980s. Take Me Home Tonight stars Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Teresa Palmer, Dan Fogler, and Chris Pratt in a wild night of drunken partying.

In advance of the March 4th release, Topher dropped by Dallas for a brief press tour in January and I got to sit down with him. Among the topics on the table was the chemistry of the cast, the delay and eventual release, the inspiration for the film, and a ‘80s movie quiz. Hit the jump for my impressions of Take Me Home Tonight, along with the full transcript and audio.

Check Out a Behind the Scenes Featurette for TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT

A behind the scenes featurette for the upcoming comedy Take Me Home Tonight has landed online. Directed by Michael Dowse, the film stars Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, Teresa Palmer, and Chris Pratt. The comedy is set in 1988 and features a recent MIT grad (Grace) who makes a move on his high school crush (Palmer), steals a car, and embarks on numerous other misadventures all in the course of one night. While it very well may have a lot more going for it, I plan on catching the film for no other reason than its nostalgia-ridden 80s soundtrack. Here’s to hoping A-ha’s classic “Take on Me” makes an appearance.

Hit the jump to check out the featurette. Take Me Home Tonight hits theaters next week on March 4th.

TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT Cast Parodies 80s Flicks in Music Video

Take Me Home Tonight revels in its 80s setting, but it’s not a parody.  The cast has saved that for a new music video that has stars Topher Grace, Dan Fogler, Anna Faris, and Teresa Palmer dressing up and referencing as many 80s movies as they can within the span of about four minutes (there’s also a fun cameo by another Take Me Home Tonight cast member).  Grace also does a Michael J. Fox impression that is worth stopping what you’re doing and watching this video now.

Topher Grace Says Featuring Heavy Cocaine Use Was the Reason for Delay of TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT

The 80s comedy Take Me Home Tonight has had a long road to the screen.  Originally titled, Kids in America, the film wrapped shooting back in 2007 and is now set for release on March 4, 2011.  The film centers on a recent MIT grad (Topher Grace) who gets invited, along with his best friend (Dan Fogler) and twin sister (Anna Faris), to an epic, end-of-summer 1988 party by his high-school crush (Teresa Palmer).  That doesn’t sound like such a tough sell…except for all the cocaine.  Grace, who’s also a producer on the film, explained to MTV:

“It tested really well.  It’s an audience film. It’s not drama, but there was a real hesitation because there is so much cocaine in it, and our feeling at the time was, ‘You can’t do a movie about Prohibition without alcohol, and you really can’t do a movie about partying in the ’80s, at the age these kids are, without showing cocaine use.”

TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT Trailer and Poster

by     Posted: December 14th, 2010 at 5:25 pm

The trailer and poster for Take Me Home Tonight have been released.  Set in 1988, the film follows Matt Franklin (Topher Grace) through a crazy Labor Day weekend party as he chases after the girl of his dreams while encountering some bumps along the way (classic formula for a quasi-spiritual coming of age comedy). The trailer’s soundtrack was enough to get me excited, but I’ve also got a feeling that this film might prove to be more than just a Garden State set in the 80’s.  Take Me Home Tonight also stars Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, Teresa Palmer, Chris Pratt, Michelle Trachtenberg, Lucy Punch, Michael Ian Black, and Demetri Martin.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer and a synopsis of the film:

Teresa Palmer Interview I AM NUMBER FOUR; Plus Updates on TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT and Kieran Darcy-Smith’s SAY NOTHING

by     Posted: December 7th, 2010 at 10:53 am

While moviegoers have seen a lot of Teresa Palmer over the past few years in films such as The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Bedtime Stories, for her upcoming sci-fi action thriller I Am Number Four, we’re going to see a new side: action star.  That’s because in director D.J. Caruso’s upcoming movie (produced by Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay), Palmer plays a mysterious outsider who eventually kicks some serious ass on screen.

A few months ago I got to visit the set of I Am Number Four while the production was shooting in Pittsburgh (read about it here).  On set I was able to do a roundtable interview with Palmer (click here to read) where she talked about the challenges of getting ready to film all the action and she also revealed who she plays in the movie and why it’s a cool part.  But with the new trailer getting released, DreamWorks recently held a long lead press day and I got to sit down with Palmer again to talk about the film.  While she covered some of the same subjects in the recent interview, she also talked about seeing some finished footage and her thoughts, the training, some of the cool stuff she got to do and how challenging it was to perform, and she gave some updates on Take Me Home Tonight (her film with Topher Grace, Anna Faris, and Dan Fogler) and revealed she’s about to start filming a movie for director Kieran Darcy-Smith called Say Nothing - which will also star Joel Edgerton.  More after the jump:

Jenna Fischer, Topher Grace, Malin Akerman, and Chris Messina to Star in THE GIANT MECHANICAL MAN

by     Posted: November 5th, 2010 at 2:23 pm

Jenna Fischer (The Office), Topher Grace (Predators), Malin Akerman (Watchmen) and Chris Messina (Julia and Julia) have all signed on to star in The Giant Mechanical Man. The film will be a romantic comedy, which tells the story of “two outsiders — a misunderstood street performer (Chris Messina) and the soft spoken zoo worker who falls for him.”  Fischer will play the role of the zoo keeper, while Akerman will play her older sister, who pushes her towards dating a pompous motivational speaker (Topher Grace).  The film will be written and directed by acclaimed playwright Lee Kirk.  You can hit the jump to check out the full press release.

PREDATORS Blu-ray Review

by     Posted: October 28th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Predator is one of the great action movies of the 1980’s. John McTiernan directed the hell out of it, and it is one of the great signature Arnold Schwarzenegger roles. They tried sequelizing it, and then there were the pathetic Alien vs. Predator films – Fox knew there was a franchise here, they just didn’t know how to pull it off. So they hired Robert Rodriguez to produce a new sequel that ignored all the other spin-offs, and to class it up, they ripped off James Cameron by naming it Predators. Nimrod Antal directs Adrian Brody, Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins, Laurence Fishburne, Alice Braga, Topher Grace, Louis Ozawa Changchein, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Oleg Taktarov as a group of killers rounded up by Predators, and let loose on an Alien planet to defend themselves. In this case, the hunters become the hunted until they become hunters hunting the hunters who are hunting them. My review of Predators on Blu-ray after the jump.
