Relativity has released a new trailer for writer/director Scott Cooper’s (Crazy Heart) upcoming drama Out of the Furnace.  The film stars Christian Bale as an ex-con steel worker who seeks vengeance when his brother (Casey Affleck) disappears after getting involved with a local crime ring.  The pic finally premiered at AFI Fest last week to a fairly positive if somewhat muted response, with many nothing that the pic is very, very dark.  That’s completely fine by me, and I’m still very much impressed with everything we’ve seen thus far.  This latest trailer has some bits of new footage scattered throughout, and it still seems to be driving home the film’s theme of familial bonds with regards to Bale and Affleck’s characters.

Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.  The film also stars Zoe SaldanaWillem DafoeSam Shepard, and Forest Whitaker.  Out of the Furnace opens in theaters December 6th.

Four new images have been released for Scott Cooper’s drama Out of the Furnace.  The film stars Christian Bale as an ex-con steel worker who seeks vengeance when his brother (Casey Affleck) disappears after getting involved with a local crime ring.  The pic seems to be flying under the radar when it comes to awards prognostication.  Perhaps that’s because of early buzz amongst Oscar bloggers (where’s Adam when you need him?!) or because the plot doesn’t reach for something as lofty as other contenders even thought it looks like a compelling character drama.  Perhaps its awards fortunes will change when it premieres at AFI Fest later this month.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film also stars Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson, Willem Dafoe, Sam Shepard, and Forest WhitakerOut of the Furnace opens in theaters December 6th.

God’s Gonna Cut You Down in New Trailer for HBO’s TRUE DETECTIVE Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson; Plus New Poster and Images

HBO has released a new trailer, clips, and poster for their upcoming “elevate serial narrative”, True DetectiveWoody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey star as two detectives whose lives collide and entwine during a seventeen-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. The investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 is framed and interlaced with testimony from the detectives in 2012, when the case has been reopened.  Judging by this trailer, the show is going to be ridiculously dark with not only the criminal’s deeds, but the deeply messed up detectives trying to solve the case.  HBO is known for their edgy programming, but this looks unlike anything they’ve done before.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, clips, and poster.  True Detective premieres Sunday, January 12th at 9/8c.

Lionsgate has released the final trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.  I’m sure the TV spots will probably have a little new footage, but this trailer gives us good pieces of the new arena, but also doesn’t forget to sell the major conflict, which is between Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and President Snow (Donald Sutherland).  It’s almost entirely summed up in the shot where points an arrow at the sky and lets it fly.  Ultimately, this does what every good trailer should do: shows off some good stuff, but doesn’t give away anything major.

5 Unnerving Teasers for HBO’s TRUE DETECTIVE Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson

HBO’s True Detective is one my most-anticipated TV shows.  Per our previous description of the unique series, “Directed by Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre), the series is described as an “elevated serial narrative” that uses multiple perspectives and time frames.  Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey star as two detectives whose lives collide and entwine during a seventeen-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. The investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 is framed and interlaced with testimony from the detectives in 2012, when the case has been reopened.  The show is envisioned as an anthology, and these first eight episodes will tell a complete story involving McConaughey and Harrelson’s characters.”  What I like about these teasers is that they’re not really selling the marquee stars.  They’re selling the tone, and it’s a tone that looks excitingly off-kilter.

Hit the jump to check out the teasers.  True Detective premieres in January 2014.

Relativity Media has released a new trailer for director Scott Cooper’s (Crazy Heart) upcoming drama Out of the Furnace, and the film looks fantastic.  The pic stars Christian Bale as an ex-con steel worker who seeks vengeance when his brother (Casey Affleck) disappears after getting involved with a local crime ring.  This new trailer has a stronger focus on Woody Harrelson’s character, who promises to be a rather menacing force in the film.  The performances look great all around, and like the first trailer, this new look teases a character-focused story with a strong thematic undercurrent of redemption and family told through the lens of America’s working class.  No wonder the pic landed on our Most Anticipated list of fall films.

AFI Fest was put in bit of a bind last week when the disappointing news broke that Sony Pictures Classic was opting to push director Bennett Miller’s excellent-looking drama Foxcatcher to 2014.  The film had been poised to be AFI Fest’s centerpiece premiere film, and so the festival organizers were no doubt left scrambling to find a replacement.  In Foxcatcher’s stead, AFI Fest announced today that director Scott Cooper’s (Crazy Heart) new film Out of the Furnace will now make its world premiere at the festival.  The promising pic stars Christian Bale as an ex-con steel worker who seeks vengeance when his brother (Casey Affleck) disappears after getting involved with a local crime ring.  Additionally, Nebraska and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty have been added to the AFI Fest slate.

Hit the jump to check out some new images from Out of the Furnace.  The film also stars Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana, Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker, and Sam Shepard and opens in theaters on December 6th.

A batch of new images from director Francis Lawrence’s sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has landed online, giving us a closer look at the film’s large ensemble cast.  The story finds President Snow (Donald Sutherland) trying to crush a budding rebellion that was ignited by Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) actions in the previous film, as the 75th Hunger Games (aka Quarter Quell) finds past victors competing against each other.  I’m eager to see what Lawrence brings to the table as the new overseer of the franchise (he’s also directing Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2), and the previous trailers have been promising.

NOW YOU SEE ME Sequel in the Works; Filming Planned for 2014

now-you-see-me-2-sequel

One of the biggest box office surprises of 2013 thus far has been director Louis Leterrier’s magician heist pic Now You See Me.  The $75 million film went on to gross $115.6 million domestically, and it’s international total now stands at $119.3.  When you consider that some major studio tentpoles (ahem The Lone Ranger) have failed to cross the $100 million mark stateside, that is an incredibly impressive performance; obviously this means it’s time to make a sequel.  THR reports that Lionsgate and Summit are moving forward with a follow-up film, with production currently “penciled in” for 2014.  Should that plan stick, we could expect to possibly see Now You See Me 2 hit theaters in 2015.  Hit the jump for more.

New Trailer for THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson

Lionsgate premiered a new trailer for at the Comic-Con panel for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and just posted it online.  The sequel finds Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) dealing with the after-effects of the first film as a nationwide uprising begins to swell.  The trailer does a good job of showing such an abstract idea as “stirring rebellion” with a variety of impressive crowd shots, and I like the tease of the new battlefield at the very end.  The books do a good job of upping the stakes with each new book, and I have every reason to believe so far that director Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) captures that in the adaptation.

Liam HemsworthSam ClaflinElizabeth BanksWoody HarrelsonDonald Sutherland, Philip Seymour HoffmanJena MaloneJeffrey Wright, and Amanda Plummer also star.  The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens on November 22.  Click here for our recap of the Comic-Con panel, and watch the trailer after the break.
