Nicolas Cage Talks SNL’s GET IN THE CAGE WITH NIC CAGE

One of my favorite Saturday Night Live sketches from the past few years was “Get in the Cage.”  The sketch featured Andy Samberg as Nicolas Cage, and each episode would have “Cage” talking with fellow thespians about their craft and their recent work.  Some of the episodes included Bradley CooperJude LawJake GyllenhaalLiam Neeson, and would you believe the real Nicolas Cage. About a year ago, when Cage was promoting Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance, he stopped by SNL and did the sketch with Samberg.  Not only was it a huge surprise, it was also incredibly funny.

At the recent New York City press day for DreamWorks Animations The Croods, I asked Cage about appearing in the sketch and mentioned how funny it was.  While I was a bit nervous that he wouldn’t want to talk about it, this was not the case at all.  In fact, it seemed like he might have been waiting for someone to ask him about it, as he wanted to go on record that not everything he says is a whisper or a scream.   Hit the jump to watch the sketch and to see Cage talk about appearing on SNL.  Look for my full interview with Cage tomorrow.

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.  The plot revolves around Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) and Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) returning to Swallow Falls to clean up the mess created by the FLDSMDFR, only to find that food is now taking on the form of mutant beasts.  I laughed a lot during this trailer, but keep in mind that I love puns, so I crack up when the beasts are called “Mosquitoast” and “Shrimpanzees”.  The trailer also shows off the strange, offbeat humor that made the first film such a delight.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also features the voices of Andy Samberg, Benjamin Bratt, Terry Crews, and Neil Patrick HarrisCloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 opens in 3D on September 27th.

After stepping away from NBC’s Saturday Night Live, many wondered what Andy Samberg had in store for his future career.  It looks like one of his upcoming projects will be a return to television in a pilot for an untitled Fox comedy series written by Parks and Recreation co-creators, Mike Schur and Dan Goor.  The comedy centers on a motley group of detectives stationed near the outskirts of New York City.  Samberg would play the lead detective in a role that show creators say is a perfect match.  Hit the jump to hear what else Schur and Goor had to say, in addition to news on Brendan Fraser toplining the TNT pilot, Legends

Let’s all do the release date shuffle, courtesy of Sony!

  • RoboCop, the Jose Padilha-directed remake starring Joel Kinnaman, has been bumped from its August 9th, 2013 spot to February 7th, 2014.
  • Taking over the former RoboCop spot will be Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, starring Matt Damon.  The picture moves from March 1st, 2013 to August 9th, 2013. (Fun fact: Blomkamp’s District 9 was released that same week in 2009.)
  • Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers will move up from its previous spot of February 7th, 2014 to September 27th, 2013.  The animated feature will land on roughly the same weekend as this year’s hit, Hotel Transylvania.
  • Pixels, the Happy Madison production based on an 8-bit French short, is listed as “in development” and won’t make a 2014 release, though it was previously pegged for May 17, 2013.

THAT’S MY BOY Blu-ray Review

by     Posted 1 year, 183 days ago

It has to be said that That’s My Boy has brilliant casting. When Andy Samberg hit Saturday Night Live he felt like the second Adam Sandler clone to hit the show (Jimmy Fallon was first), and so casting him as the son of Sandler feels right. Unfortunately, That’s My Boy is like most recent Sandler movies in that it’s scattershot, and not as funny as it should be. It is R rated, which means we get a darker Sandler than late, but that only helps so much. Our review of That’s My Boy on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

For the first time, I’m writing from the comfort of my newly remodeled “mancave” or, as my wife likes to lovingly refer to it, the “nerdcave”. For a space that used to be an attached garage/dungeon, I have to say that the end result is pretty cozy. I guess there really are no living quarters that a substantial amount of time, money, and framed movie prints can’t fix. Now, if only I could find a way to fit and/or afford a mini-fridge, classic stand-up arcade games (i.e. The Simpsons, and X-Men), theater-style seating, and a projection screen that comes down from the ceiling via hand-clap command, I may finally be able to fulfill my dream of never leaving home again.

All praises of my new space aside, this week’s incarnation of the Top 5 brings a look back at our Fantastic Fest 2012 coverage, Looper interviews with writer/director Rian Johnson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt, The Avengers Blu-ray interviews with members of the pic’s visual effects team, The Perks of Being a Wallflower interviews with Emma Watson, writer/director Stephen Chbosky and more, and Hotel Transylvania interviews with Andy Samberg and Selena Gomez just to name a few. As you might expect, a brief recap and link to each is holding down the fort after the jump.

Opening this weekend is the animated film Hotel Transylvania.  Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack), the story centers on Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) trying to throw a party for his daughter Mavis’ (Selena Gomez) 118th birthday, but his plans go haywire when a human (Andy Samberg) comes to the monsters-only hotel and develops a crush on Mavis.  The film also features the voices of David Spade (Griffin the Invisible Man), Steve Buscemi (Wayne the Werewolf), Kevin James (Frankenstein), Molly Shannon (Wanda the Werewolf) and Cee Lo Green (Murray the Mummy). For more on the film, here’s six clips and all our previous coverage.

At this year’s Toronto International Film Festival I got to speak with Samberg and Gomez.  During our very loose interview, we talked about how they got involved in Hotel Transylvania, the recording process, how things changed during production, and more.  In addition, we joked about future touring plans, how this year’s Oscar race is be between The Master and Hotel Transylvania, Samberg’s upcoming BBC show Cuckoo, and Gomez talks about Feed the Dog which she just finished filming.  Hit the jump to watch.

MACGRUBER Director Jorma Taccone to Helm SPY GUYS for New Line; The Lonely Island Producing

by     Posted 1 year, 208 days ago

New Line has picked up the action-comedy pitch Spy GuysJorma Taccone (MacGruber) is attached to direct from a script by Adam Sztykiel (Due Date).  The story centers on a framed CIA agent who becomes an enemy of the state while attending a friend’s European wedding.  The spy reveals his undercover identity to his civilian friends, and they go on the run to clear his name.  That’s a solid premise, and it is encouraging that the skewed mind behind MacGruber is in charge.  Plus it is nice to see Taccone get a second chance after his feature directorial debut failed to gross even $10 million worldwide in 2010.

Heat Vision reports that Taccone’s Lonely Island collaborators Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer will produce along with John Rickard (Horrible Bosses).

Hilariously Dirty Red-Band Trailer for THE TO DO LIST Starring Aubrey Plaza, Donald Glover, and Rachel Bilson

The debut red-band trailer for the R-rated comedy The To Do List (previously titled The Hand Job) has landed online, and it’s wonderfully filthy.  The film stars Aubrey Plaza as a sexually inexperienced teenager with a type-A personality who decides to engage in numerous sex acts before she goes to college.  The trailer is very explicit about said acts, but never veers into “too awkward to watch” territory.  Plaza is spot-on as the lead, and she’s buoyed by a ridiculously amazing supporting cast that includes Donald Glover, Rachel Bilson, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Alia Shawkat, Mae Whitman, Johnny Simmons, Connie Britton, Clark Gregg, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Scott Porter.  Seriously, this ensemble is stacked and they all look to be bringing their A-game.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer, then make your Valentine’s Day plans accordingly.  Written and directed by Maggie Carey, the film opens on February 14th, 2013.

I love Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and I have high expectations for the upcoming sequel, Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers.  Details on the film have been scarce, but now EW is reporting that the plot revolves around Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) and Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) returning to Swallow Falls to clean up the mess created by the FLDSMDFR only to find that food is now taking on the form of mutant beasts.  “Magically, every creature is a combination of a food item and an animal that results in just a cringeworthy pun,” says producer Kirk Bodyfelt.  As a fan of cringeworthy puns, this makes me even more excited for the flick.

With director Lee Toland Krieger‘s romantic comedy/drama Celeste and Jesse Forever opening today, I recently got to sit down with Andy Samberg for an extended video interview.  In the film, Samberg stars with Rashida Jones as a divorcing couple who are having trouble maintaining their intense friendship while living together and pursuing other relationships.  In addition, Jones co-wrote the script with Will McCormack, and it’s a great mix of realistic comedy and drama.  It’s definitely recommended.

Anyway, if you’re a fan of Andy Samberg, you’re about to be very happy.  During my exclusive interview we talked about his entire career, what’s coming up, and so much more.  Some of the subjects we covered were Saturday Night Live, whether he’ll still do any digital shorts, Sundance, Hot Rod (and why it’s out of print on Blu-ray?!), getting to do “Get in the Cage” with Nicolas Cage, his upcoming BBC3 TV series, Cuckoo, the future of The Lonely Island and if they would ever tour, Arrested Development, and we even talked about Lord of the Rings.  Hit the jump to watch.
