The first trailer for director Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby has gone online. While I’m not the biggest fan of the source material, I do happen to be a fan of Luhrmann’s. Having this phenomenal cast lined up for the production doesn’t hurt either and this new trailer gives us a glimpse at each of them in turn. There are no 3D effects on display as of yet, but the first trailer highlights all of the bravura, hyperbole and flair we’ve come to expect from the Moulin Rouge! director. While I was a little put off by the choice of music for the trailer, I’ve got faith that the soundtrack will be exemplary as always.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke and Isla Fisher. The Great Gatsby opens in 3D on December 25th. [Update: We've now added the teaser poster, which you can find after the jump.]

Some new set photos from The Great Gatsby have surfaced, giving us a great look at the three leads in costume. Leonardo DiCaprio looks positively dapper as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan is lovely as Daisy, and Tobey Maguire looks like….well, Tobey Maguire. The images are pretty fantastic, and if you weren’t won over by the casting decisions alone, these costume pics should entice you. We got glances of Maguire before (as well as Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher), but this is our first look at DiCaprio and Mulligan. I’m anxiously looking forward to the adaptation not only because it’s The Great Gatsby, but also because I’m highly intrigued as to what director Baz Luhrmann has in store for his 3D iteration.

Director Baz Luhrmann continues to fill out the cast for his 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby. His primary cast of Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy is set, and he’s now turned his attention to the crucial role of Tom Buchanan. Ben Affleck was previously circling the part, but was ultimately unable to fit the film into his schedule as his next directorial effort Argo starts production in September and Gatbsy is poised to roll in August. Now it looks like Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom) and Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) have emerged as frontrunners for the role. Hit the jump for more, as well as a synopsis of the book.

Baz Luhrmann has taken his time to figure out what he wants to do with this Great Gatsby adaptation. He bought the rights to the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel in 2008. Luhrmann began to workshop the project with a number of A-listers late last year. He mulled long and hard over all of Hollywood’s prettiest starlets for the role of Daisy, and wondered if Daisy might look more fetching in 3D. Throughout the process, Lurhmann never officially decided The Great Gatsby is his next project, saying at the DGA Awards, “I gotta make a decision in three days’ time.”
A fortnight (and then some) has passed since that statement, and THR has the verdict. Luhrmann will film The Great Gatsby in 3D this August in his hometown Syndey Australia. Leonardo DiCaprio will play Jay Gatsby, and Carey Mulligan has been offered the role of Daisy Buchanan. Details after the break.

Baz Luhrmann may be reconsidering an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Speaking to Vulture at the DGA Awards on Saturday, Luhrmann said he has to “make a decision in three days’ time,” on “Whether to do it or not.” Only a few weeks ago it looked like a “Go” project with filming expected to begin this summer and Carey Mulligan attached to play Daisy. Luhrmann was even considering whether or not to make the movie in 3D. The director had been previously work-shopping the film with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire in the roles of Gatsby and Nick Carraway, respectively.
Luhrmann says “I think I’ve been a bit shaded out because I want everything to be perfectly positioned on it,” and that we should expect news on the project “by the end of the week.” Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Baz Luhrmann is considering shooting his adaptation of The Great Gatsby in 3D. THR reports that the filmmaker has workshopped the project in 3D, but is still in the process of making a decision. I’m not exactly sure why The Great Gatsby needs to be in 3D unless you want an infinite depth of field when you watch boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
Carey Mulligan is attached to play Daisy in the film with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire as the front runners to play Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway, respectively. Filming is expected to begin this summer. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

The frenetic, color-infused world of Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge has now descended upon the Blu-ray shelves, where Nicole Kidman’s Satine and Ewan McGregor’s Christian find impossible love in courtesan-filled streets of late nineteenth century Paris. Though it’s the sort of film that demands to be seen on Blu-ray, this is a release just as pleasing for its cohesive extras as it is for the color-amped proceedings that unravel throughout the film. One of the most coveted roles in Hollywood has just been filled. Last week we told you that Carey Mulligan was the frontrunner to star in Director Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby, and now he’s made it official. In a statement to Deadline, Luhrmann wrote, “I was thrilled to pick up the phone an hour ago to the young Oscar-nominated British actress Carey Mulligan and say to her: ‘Hello, Daisy Buchanan.’” Mulligan was on a long list of candidates who were considered for the role that included her Never Let Me Go co-star Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman, and Rebecca Hall.
Joining Mulligan will most likely be Leonardo Dicaprio as Gatsby himself, and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway. Luhrmann is known to workshop his films well before they go into production and Gatsby was no exception. Dicaprio and Maguire had been joined by a few of the actresses shortlisted for the role of Daisy, including Mulligan, in recent weeks. It’s not known how soon the film will go into production, however, as Luhrmann said there are still a few elements that need to be resolved before he decides that this is his next film. The Moulin Rouge! director is currently deciding between Gatsby and an unknown musical said to be set in New York. Either one sounds like fantastic territory for the Australian director.

There’s been heavy speculation over who will play the role of Daisy in Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. While it looks like the director has set his eye on having Leonardo DiCaprio play Gatsby and Tobey Maguire play Nick Carraway, actresses rumored for the role of Daisy have included Rebecca Hall, Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams, Scarlett Johansson, and Natalie Portman. Now Vulture is reporting that Carey Mulligan is the front-runner to nab the role. Johansson was the top choice, but her decision to star in Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo created a scheduling conflict. Shooting on Gatsby is scheduled to begin next summer.

William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” has been told countless times, in pretty much every form possible. Director Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 adaptation updated the tragic love story to present day, with one kicker: he retained much of Shakespeare’s original dialogue. The result is the dizzying, highly ambitious Romeo + Juliet. This iteration stars a pre-Titanic Leonardo DiCaprio and a fresh-faced Claire Danes as the titular characters. For my review of the film, as well as the various new bonus features included on the Blu-ray, hit the jump.
