I was completely blown away by how far the fourth episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead decided to go. This was an unbelievable episode that showcased everything the fans have asked for and then some: dramatic character development, incredible tension across the board, plenty of gore to go around and more than its fair share of heartbreak. My only complaint with this brilliant episode is, being this early in the season, how can they hope to top it?
Starring Andrew Lincoln, Sarah Wayne Callies, Chandler Riggs, IronE Singleton, Melissa McBride, Laurie Holden, Danai Gurira, David Morrissey, Michael Rooker, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson and Emily Kinney, AMC’s The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9. Last week on The Walking Dead, we saw Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the crew deal with a life-threatening injury to one of their own, a prison swarming with Walkers and the arrival of a group of strangers that did not have the best of intentions. We’ll have to wait at least another week to see how they’re doing because tonight’s episode is all about Andrea (Laurie Holden) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). We also get a great introduction to season three’s most anticipated new character and a warm welcome for a character from the past. Last week, we got a a good look at our zombie apocalypse survivors working as a team in the season three premiere of The Walking Dead on AMC. The crew stormed a prison, cleared the grounds of Walkers and prepared to hole up in the secure and defensible cell blocks. Unfortunately, one of their own took a Walker bite to the ankle in the process and the gang found out that they were not the only survivors seeking refuge in the prison. The second episode, “Sick,” picks up right where we left off. After the solid opening episode, the follow-up has managed to ratchet up the tension while satiating the audience’s appetite for Walker (and non-Walker) deaths alike. It’s finally here: the season three premiere of The Walking Dead on AMC (but not on Dish…I promise that’s the last time I’ll say that). The last season found our survivors of the zombie apocalypse holed up at the Greene family barn for the duration, until a host of walkers (and some dramatic deaths) drove them from the land. Tonight’s opener showed us that the long winter has hardened the team into a well-oiled machine, but they’re in dire need of shelter for a very pregnant Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies). Hit the jump to check out our recap and review, plus bonus items like body counts, best kill, best zombie/effect and number of casualties in the season three premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead.

The hit AMC drama series The Walking Dead returns for season three, with higher stakes, more threatening human villains and, of course, plenty of zombies. When things pick back up, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his fellow survivors continue to seek refuge, this time in an abandoned prison, but soon discover that there are greater forces to fear than just the walking dead. The struggle to survive has never been so perilous, especially considering that Rick’s wife, Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), is close to the due date of her pregnancy. Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, the show also stars Laurie Holden, Steven Yeun, Norman Reedus, Chandler Riggs, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, IronE Singleton, Melissa McBride, Danai Gurira and David Morrissey.
At the show’s press day, co-stars Andrew Lincoln and Sarah Wayne Callies talked about where the relationship between Rick and Lori is at now, the dynamic with their son Carl (Riggs) this season, how different the philosophies are of both Rick and The Governor (Morrissey), and what it was like to shoot the entire opening sequence with no dialogue. Check out what they had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

Tonight, the third season of The Walking Dead premieres. The show seems poised to make it to the next level with fan-favorite storylines from the books finally being used for the TV series. More importantly, the show now seems ready for these storylines by becoming a popular television series in its own right rather than coasting on name recognition and being the only zombie-horror show on television. At yesterday’s New York Comic-Con panel for the show, it was all about the fans and letting them pick the brains of the cast and creators before the walkers come shambling back into our homes.

Summer is great and all, but it just delays the arrival of the next season of AMC’s epic zombie series, The Walking Dead (though the network is airing a marathon of the first two seasons this July). A new character will join the show when it returns for its third season this fall, a villainous man known as The Governor. We already brought you the first look of another new character, the katana-wielding Michonne (Danai Gurira). And we also brought you the casting news when BAFTA-nominated British actor David Morrissey (State of Play) won the role of the Governor. Now, we’re pleased to share the first look of Morrissey in Governor get-up with you!
