In keeping with the Halloween spirit, two current horror classic remakes have used the holiday as an opportunity to do a bit of marketing.  First up, Fede Alvarez’s reboot of Evil Dead has released the first images of the Necronomicon, or Book of the Dead.  In Sam Raimi’s 1981 classic, the book was discovered by the friends staying in the cabin and who inadvertently unleashed evil spirits.  This new version isn’t the one that fans are familiar with, possibly due to copyright issues…or perhaps there’s a surprise in store for us once the movie hits.  Evil Dead, starring Jane Levy (Fun Size), opens April 12th, 2013.

In other horror remake news, Kimberly Peirce’s reboot of Carrie has kicked off their viral marketing campaign with a series of disturbing messages that fans can access over the phone.  Starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore, Carrie opens March 15th, 2013. Hit the jump to see the Evil Dead images and how you can access the Carrie messages.

One of the films to premiere footage at this year’s New York Comic-Con was director Kimberly Peirce‘s (Boys Don’t Cry) remake of Carrie.  Based on the book by Stephen King, Screen Gems says Carrie is “a reimagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.”  While many were nervous about the remake, Matt was very impressed with the footage.  Read his recap here and here’s the first trailer.

Shortly before the Comic-Con panel, I did an exclusive interview with Chloë Moretz.  We talked about her experiences with comic-con, why she prefers the PS3 to the XBox 360, video games, how she got the role in Carrie and the audition process, the challenges Hit-Girl faces in the Kick-Ass sequel, whether Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) will make an appearance, what she has planned next, and more.  Hit the jump to watch.

Remaking Carrie is a tough prospect.  Even if it hadn’t been made into a classic horror film in 1976 by director Brian De Palma, you’d still be adapting a beloved book by Stephen King.  However, director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) has a pretty good shot at her new adaptation by finding a new take on the material that goes further in depth regarding the relationship between abused telekinetic teenager Carrie White and her mother Margaret.  The shot at successful remake becomes even higher when you have Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore playing Carrie and Maragret, respectively.  At this year’s New York Comic-Con, we got our first look at Peirce’s remake, and it looks like she may have brought King’s troubled girl back from the dead with more than just an inopportune grave visit.

We previously brought you the first looks at Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) in a new version of his RoboCop suit, but now we have a few more looks at Kinnaman as the 100% human Alex Murphy.  Speaking of superhumans, director Jeff Wadlow recently tweeted a number of photos of the Kick-Ass 2 cast in costume.  Though none are as awesome as the first look at Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars, these set photos do have that “official” ring to them.

Director Jose Padilha’s RoboCop also stars Abbie Cornish, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton and Jackie Earle Haley and opens August 9th, 2013.  Kick-Ass 2, starring Aaron Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, opens June 28th of next year.  Hit the jump to see the new images.

It’s a minor miracle that Kick-Ass 2 is a reality.  Matthew Vaughn’s first film was a respectable success but the R-rated superhero pic was by no means a blockbuster, so few were expecting a follow-up to come to fruition.  But alas, production is currently underway on Kick-Ass 2 in Toronto under the direction of Jeff Wadlow, and some new set photos have surfaced that give us a look at a little older Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl and the actress’ stunt double in full costume.  We also get a peek at Aaron Johnson as the titular Kick-Ass and Hit Girl’s bike, as well as Morris Chestnut who takes over the role of Sergeant Marcus Williams from Omari Hardwick, who played the character in the first film.

Hit the jump to check out the bevy of set images.  The film also stars Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Olga Kurkulina, John Leguizamo, Donald Faison and Jim CarreyKick-Ass 2 opens on June 28th, 2013.

New Synopses for Fede Alvarez’s EVIL DEAD and Kimberly Peirce’s CARRIE Remakes

When Hollywood decides to greenlight a remake, we’re always interested to see if the contemporary director will put an original spin on the project or if it will be a shot-for-shot remake (see: Gus Van Sant’s 1998 Psycho remake).  So now that 2013 will feature remakes of Sam Raimi’s 1981cult classic Evil Dead and Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie, we’re at least curious as to which, if either, will offer moviegoers something new on the big screen.

Fede Alvarez’s The Evil Dead stars Jane Levy (Suburgatory), Shiloh Fernandez (Red Riding Hood), Lou Taylor Pucci (Carriers), Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield) and Elizabeth Blackmore (Burning Man) and opens April 12th, 2013.  Kimberly Perice’s Carrie remake stars Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass) in the title role alongside Judy Greer (13 Going on 30), Portia Doubleday (Youth in Revolt), Alex Russell (Chronicle), Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers), Ansel Elgort and Julianne Moore (Magnolia), opening March 15th, 2013.  Hit the jump to check out the new official synopses.

Chloe Moretz May Reteam with Kodi Smit-McPhee for THE WILDERNESS OF JAMES

A Let Me In reunion may be in the works.  Deadline reports that Chloe Moretz is currently in negotiations to star in the indie The Wilderness of James, where she would star opposite her Let Me In screen partner Kodi Smit-McPhee.  The coming of age story takes place in Portland and centers on a young boy who is dealing with the absence of his father.  Michael Johnson, who wrote the script, is making his directorial debut on the project.

There are a few scheduling issues to work out before Moretz can sign on.  Production on The Wilderness of James is set to begin next month, but Moretz is currently filming Kimberley Peirce’s Carrie remake and will move directly into filming Jeff Wadlow’s sequel Kick-Ass 2 once she wraps.  No word on where James might be shooting, but as the immensely talented Moretz steps into more high-profile roles it’s nice to see that she’s still attracted to small, dramatic indies.

After yesterday’s news that Universal was courting Jim Carrey for Jeff Wadlow’s Kick-Ass 2, now Lindy Booth (Dawn of the Dead) is in talks to star as yet another hero.  Carrey was sought to play Colonel Stars,  who forms the heroic team, Justice Forever.  While Carrey may not take the role, Booth is currently in negotiations to star as the Night Bitch, a member of Justice Forever.

Kick-Ass 2, which features the return of stars Aaron Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, stars filming next month in Toronto and New York.  Hit the jump for more on Booth, Night Bitch and a recap of the casting so far.

Universal reportedly wants Jim Carrey to join the ass kicking in director Jeff Wadlow’s Kick-Ass 2.  The sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s 2010 original film adaptation of the Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. comic already features returning cast members Aaron Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, Nicolas Cage and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.  Carrey is being sought to play the role of Colonel Stars, a founding member of Justice Forever who recruits heroes to the crime fighting group.  Deadline reports that, though Carrey is a fan of Vaughn’s original film, no deals are in place yet.  Do you think Carrey would be a good fit for the Colonel? Let us know in the comments!

Production has officially started in Toronto for Boys Don’t Cry director Kimberly Peirce’s remake of Stephen King’s Carrie, starring Chloe Grace Moretz. Up until now, we’ve only been able to bring you casting news on the horror picture, which stars Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Gabriella Wilde and Ansel Elgort. The new press release provides a few more plot details, which leads us to believe they’re sticking quite closely to the source material.  I’m not 100% up to date on the differences between the novel and the 1976 Brian De Palma film, but Moretz recently stated that the new version will be closer to the book.  Hit the jump for more plot details on Peirce’s version of Carrie, along with a first look at Moretz in the title role.

After more than a decade of directing for television, Ami Canaan Mann (Friday Night Lights, Morning) returns to feature films with the dark crime drama Texas Killing Fields.  The script was first commissioned a decade ago by her father, director Michael Mann (Heat, Public Enemies), who acts as producer here.  At one time director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 127 Hours) was attached to the film, but he backed out, stating that the film was too dark to ever get made.  The film stars Sam Worthington, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jessica Chastain, and Chloe Grace Moretz.  Hit the jump for my review of the Texas Killing Fields Blu-ray.

The cast is really starting to shape up for Kimberley Peirce’s (Boys Don’t Cry) remake of the classic horror film, Carrie.  The new adaptation of the Stephen King source novel already features Chloe Moretz in the title role with Julianne Moore playing Carrie’s conservative and controlling mother.  Now, it looks like one of Carrie’s classmate tormenters are in the process of being cast, with Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers) having recently joined.  Judy Greer (13 Going on 30) is reportedly in talks to play the pivotal role of the girls’ gym teacher.  It’s not known yet whether the Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Big Love) adaptation will follow Brian De Palma’s original to the letter or if some artistic license will be taken.  Hit the jump for more info on the Carrie casting news. [Update: We've received word that Ivana Baquero is no longer in consideration for the role.  Also, no casting decisions have yet been made for the role of the gym teacher.]

Normally, Mark Millar is not the most reliable of sources, but since we recently confirmed the start date of production on Kick-Ass 2, we can lend a bit more credence to the comic writer’s comments in the following interview.  Director Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down spoke recently on the progress and tone of the sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s 2010 original hit, Kick-Ass.  Millar expands on his comments quite a bit, including a candid talk about Wadlow being chosen as director, the use of Hit-Girl in the sequel, the return of the original cast (including Aaron Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and where the franchise will go from here.  Some spoilers lay in wait ahead, but feel free to hit the jump as I’ll move the spoiler-free updates to the head of the line.
