The dramatic thriller Red Lights, from writer/director Rodrigo Cortes (Buried), follows a pair of top paranormal researchers facing their greatest challenge, as they set out to discredit a powerful psychic.  Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and her partner, Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) are the world’s foremost investigators of paranormal phenomena.  When legendary blind psychic Simon Silver (Robert DeNiro) comes out of retirement after 30 years, Tom becomes determined to discredit the seemingly genuine showman, regardless of the consequences.

At the film’s press day, actor Cillian Murphy talked about creating this character and the world he lives in, how skeptical he personally is of paranormal activity, working with his esteemed co-stars, how his nationality affects him as an individual, and the type of work that he looks to do.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Exclusive Clip from Rodrigo Cortes’ Thriller Red Lights Starring Robert De Niro and Cillian Murphy

Today, we have an exclusive clip for Rodrigo Cortes‘ thriller Red Lights. The story focuses on two physicists (Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver) who investigate hoaxes, but must wrestle with the possibility of the supernatural when they encounter renowned psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro).  In this clip, we see Silver talking up his audience before he performs some seemingly supernatural healing ability, but what the clip really showcases is how De Niro can still turn in a strong performance when he wants to.

Following the release of these character posters earlier this week, a new trailer for director Rodrigo Cortes’ supernatural thriller, Red Lights, has gone online.  The picture stars Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver as two paranormal investigators with a long track record of debunked psychics, faith healers and outright frauds.  One such mystic who has escaped their deductive logic is the blind psychic, Simon Silver (Robert De Niro).  When Silver comes out of retirement, the junior investigator sees a chance for a big win for science and recruits his star pupil (Elizabeth Olsen) to help, even while being warned to back off by his partner.  The new trailer features a bit more footage than the previous one and highlights the stand-off between Murphy and De Niro.  As a bonus, it’s introduced by the lovely Ms. Weaver.  Hit the jump to check it out.

Millennium has released four character posters for Rodrigo Cortés‘ supernatural thriller Red Lights.  The story focuses on two physicists (Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver) who investigate hoaxes, but must wrestle with the possibility of the supernatural when they encounter renowned psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro).  I dug almost the entire film when I saw it at Sundance, but the ending really leaves a bad taste in the mouth, and I’m hoping Cortés will have tweaked it when the film opens this summer.

Josh Brolin Talks OLDBOY Remake; Says Film Has Chan-wook Park’s Blessing and Includes Hammerfight and Octopus Scenes

Like most of you, I’m incredibly excited/nervous about Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake.  Director Chan-wook Park’s 2003 South Korean revenge pic is an instant classic, and though I think Lee is certainly capable of great filmmaking, he’s had more than his fair share of flops.  Josh Brolin is set as the lead, Elizabeth Olsen has signed on as the female lead, and District 9 star Sharlto Copley recently landed the villain role.  We haven’t heard much about what Lee’s remake entails other than a promised “darker ending,” but Brolin recently talked quite a bit about the film and his hesitation to remake such a brilliant piece of work.  Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE Blu-ray Review

Martha Marcy May Marelene is the ultimate Sundance movie (not an insult). It offers a breakout performance by a new performer (here Elizabeth Olsen) familiar character actor faces from the supporting cast (Sarah Paulson, John Hawkes), and a strong directorial tone and style from first timer Sean Durkin. It’s also a small movie – but not in a bad way – that tells of how a woman survived the cult she was in, and how she tries to adjust to the outside world. Our review of Martha Marcy May Marlene on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

TOP 5: JOHN CARTER, Topher Grace Edits STAR WARS Prequels, THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, SILENT HOUSE, First Image from THE LONE RANGER

I’ll use this week’s opening paragraph to offer a bit of foreshadowing. There’s a great chance that I’m going to be talking about 21 Jump Street here next week. Now, I’ll admit, I’ve never been one to laud the work of Channing Tatum. For the first time ever, though, I’m going into a film with high expectations for his performance. I think that everything I’ve seen of the film thus far looks terrific and Matt’s review and this NSFW extended trailer are just icing on the cake at this point.

On tap in this week’s “Top 5″ is a plethora of John Carter coverage including interviews with Taylor Kitsch, Andrew Stanton and more, a video blog recap of Topher Grace‘s Star Wars prequels edit, new images and a new trailer for The Cabin in the Woods, Silent House interviews with Elizabeth Olsen and co-directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, and the first image of Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in The Lone Ranger. Per usual, a brief recap and link to each await after the jump.

SILENT HOUSE Review

An interesting concept is all well and good, but without proper execution, it’s worthless.  The concept behind Chris Kentis and Laura Lau‘s horror film Silent House is to look like one unbroken, 88-minute shot (in reality, there are ten hidden cuts).  Theoretically, it’s a great approach to horror film.  If you don’t break the shot, then you don’t break the tension, and we never leave the side of the terrified protagonist.  But Kentis and Lau completely bungle their intriguing concept through cheap scares, paper-thin characters, an irritating lead performance, and a confusing, exploitative ending.

Elizabeth Olsen Talks SILENT HOUSE, LIBERAL ARTS, KILL YOUR DARLINGS, and More

Opening this weekend is Chris Kentis and Laura Lau‘s horror thriller Silent House.  Based on the Uruguayan pic La Casa Muda, Silent House centers on a young woman (Elizabeth Olsen) trapped in her family’s crumbling, secluded lakeside house.  The twist that makes Silent House stand out from your standard horror fare is that the movie was designed to make it look like it was shot in a single take. The story plays out in real time over 88 minutes as we follow Olsen’s character through the house.  Adam Trese, Eric Sheffer Stevens, Julia Taylor Ross, Haley Murphy, and Adam Barnett also star.  For more on the film, here’s the trailer, motion poster and a TV spot.

The other day I got to sit down with Elizabeth Olsen for an exclusive interview.  We talked about how she prepared for the role, the challenges of being in every frame, what was it like to do reshoots after premiering at Sundance, karaoke, and her favorite movie, director and actor.  In addition, we talked about two of her upcoming projects: Josh Radnor‘s Liberal Arts and John KrokidasKill Your Darlings (she plays Jack Kerouac‘s first love Edie Parker).  Hit the jump to watch.

New Motion Poster for the Horror Film SILENT HOUSE Starring Elizabeth Olsen

If you’ve seen Martha Marcy May Marlene, you are probably a fan of Elizabeth Olsen.  Her performance in that film is breathtaking, and now we’re going to see her movie from psychological horror to slightly-more conventional horror with Silent House.  However, Silent House (which, like Martha Marcy, also premiered at Sundance 2011), isn’t a standard haunted house movie.  The entire film is done (or at least made to look like it was done) in one take, and I’m interested to see if that approach adds tension or just comes off as a gimmicky.  Either way, I’m still happy to see a new film with Olsen in the lead role.

Hit the jump to check out the motion poster [Warning: it auto-plays with audio so adjust your speakers accordingly].  Silent House opens March 9th.

Elizabeth Olsen May Star in Spike Lee’s OLDBOY

Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) has reportedly been offered the role of the female lead in Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake. The part of Marie was previously turned down by Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland), but could be a major role for Olsen. Having quickly risen through the ranks of most-sought-after actresses, Olsen has a number of projects lined up for 2013 but may yet have time to work Oldboy into her schedule. If Oldboy can manage to pin down someone to play the villain (Clive Owen, Colin Firth and Christian Bale have already declined the role), Lee may be able to start filming late this summer as planned. Olsen would be joining Josh Brolin (W.) in the remake of the 2003 Korean revenge film by Park Chan-Wook. Hit the jump for more.

Exclusive TV Spot for Horror Thriller SILENT HOUSE

We’re happy to bring you an exclusive TV spot for the real time horror thriller Silent House today. The film stars Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) as a young woman trapped in her family’s crumbling, secluded lakeside house. The twist that makes Silent House stand out from your standard horror fare is that the movie was designed to make it look like it was shot in a single take. The story plays out in real time over 88 minutes as we follow Olsen’s character through the house, and this new TV spot makes that point very, very clear. I think it’s a fun concept for a horror film and should provide for some pretty abrupt jumps and scares.
