I’m not embarrassed to say I’m intrigued by Beautiful Creatures.  I know I’m not the target audience, but that doesn’t mean I’m excluded from enjoying the film.  For those unfamiliar with the movie, it’s supernatural love story centering on Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert) a “caster” (a.k.a. a witch), her relationship with Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich), and her dread at being chosen for good or evil.

I’m pleased to announce that we’re giving away 20 passes to the Atlanta screening of Beautiful Creatures.  Hit the jump to find out how you can check out the film early and for free.  The film also stars Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum, and Emma ThompsonBeautiful Creatures opens February 14th.

A host of new images from director Richard LaGravenese’s supernatural love story adaptation Beautiful Creatures reveal great looks at stars Alice Englert and Alden Ehrenreich.  While the movie may draw comparisons to The Twilight Saga, one thing that stands apart is the amazing costume design for Beautiful Creatures, which really puts an emphasis on Southern Gothic.

Also starring Emmy Rossum, Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emma Thompson and Thomas Mann, Beautiful Creatures opens February 14th.  Hit the jump to check out the new images.

BRAVE Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Review

Would we look at Brave more kindly if it didn’t come from Pixar? Would its flaws and foibles bug us quite so much if another studio took it on? Probably not. It has so much to recommend it – its technical credentials are so strong and its characters sufficiently endearing – that its problems wouldn’t matter so much. Unfortunately, this isn’t another studio and Pixar demands standards far beyond those of mortal men.  They did so well for so long that “good enough” no longer cuts it. Brave, sadly, can’t climb any higher than that. Hit the jump for my full review of the Blu-ray.

New Trailer for BEAUTIFUL CREATURES

A new trailer for the YA adaptation Beautiful Creatures has been released online.  The Southern supernatural romance centers on two mystically charged teens who are mysteriously drawn to one another despite never having met, and uncover some unsettling secrets about their families and the small southern town in which they live.  I found the first trailer intriguing yet a tad confusing, but this clip really digs into the plot and makes Beautiful Creatures look like a lot of fun.  We see a lot more of the characters played by Emma Thompson, Jeremy Irons, and Viola Davis, and it’s starting to make sense why actors of their caliber signed on; Thompson in particular looks to be having a blast chewing the scenery.

15 Things to Know About Richard LaGravenese’s BEAUTIFUL CREATURES From Our Set Visit

by     Posted 1 year, 158 days ago

Stepping out of the van, the heat hits all of us at the same time, and before we’ve even made it halfway up the dirt pathway—to where a sprawling, vine-covered Gothic mansion is quietly redefining the word “imposing”—every one of us is starting to sweat. The person guiding us to our destination points, and we all look around a corner to see what appears to be a checkered ballroom set into the center of a topiary garden. Dozens of elaborately-costumed actors and actresses are milling about: some have foot-tall, brightly-colored hairdos, others have their faces covered in intricate makeup jobs, and all of them must be dying in this swampy heat. Just as we’re starting to make sense of what it is we’re looking at, Jeremy Irons walks by holding a Styrofoam cup of coffee and nods a “Hello” at us.

Earlier this year, I was invited out to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Warner Bros. and director Richard LaGravenese were bringing the YA novel Beautiful Creatures to life. To say the visit was surreal doesn’t quite do it justice, but I’ll give it a shot. Meet me after the jump to find out what I learned on the Beautiful Creatures set…and why Warner Bros. might have the next, big Twilight-sized YA hit on their hands.

If you caught Tom Hanks doing any of the press rounds for Cloud Atlas, you may have noticed his oh-so-regal mustache.  The atypical facial hair was for a high profile role that Hanks is currently filming: that of Walt Disney in the real-life drama Saving Mr. Banks.  The story centers on Disney’s twenty-year pursuit of the film rights to author P.L. Travers’ (Emma Thompson) novel Mary Poppins and the rocky relationship that formed between the two.  Our first images of Hanks and Thompson in character have surfaced today, as the production filmed a few scenes on the grounds of Disneyland.

Hit the jump to take a look at the images.  Directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), the film also stars Colin Farrell, Ruth Wilson, Rachel Griffiths, Bradley Whitford, Paul Giamatti, and Jason SchwartzmanSaving Mr. Banks opens on December 20th, 2013.

First Trailer, Poster, and New Images for the Southern Supernatural Romance BEAUTIFUL CREATURES

The first trailer and poster for director Richard LaGrevenese’s Beautiful Creatures have landed online.  Based on the three-book series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, the story centers on two mystically charged teens who are mysteriously drawn to one another despite never having met, and uncover some unsettling secrets about their families and the small southern town in which they live.  I’m unfamiliar with the book series and found myself a bit lost when watching the teaser, but I dig the atmosphere and Southern Gothic aesthetic.  Moreover, watching Emma Thompson play a disapproving, devoutly religious Southern woman is a delight.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer, poster, and a batch of images, and be sure to take a peek at our set visit preview right here.  The film also stars Alice Englert, Emmy Rossum, Jeremy Irons and Viola Davis.  Beautiful Creatures hits theaters on February 13th, 2013.

Filming has commenced on Disney’s star-studded real life drama Saving Mr. Banks.  The film chronicles Walt Disney’s twenty-year pursuit of the film rights to author P.L. Travers’ novel Mary Poppins, and the rocky relationship that formed between the two.  Tom Hanks will take on the daunting task of portraying Disney (the first time he’s ever been portrayed in a dramatic film), while Emma Thompson is set as Travers.  Director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) has assembled a killer cast that includes Colin Farrell and Ruth Wilson (Anna Karenina) as Travers’ parents, Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under) as Travers’ aunt who was the inspiration for the character of Mary Poppins, Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) as screenwriter Don Dagradi, and Jason Schwartzman and B.J. Novak as the songwriting Sherman Brothers.  Moreover, Paul Giamatti and Kathy Baker also appear in supporting roles.

BRAVE Review

Sometimes meeting in the middle isn’t good enough.  There’s merit in compromise, but it can also foster mediocrity.  In order to be brave and bold, you have to step out of a comfort zone and take a chance on something that may not appeal to the masses.  From 2007 – 2009, Pixar excelled at this risk-taking in the field of animated family films.  They proudly made a movie about a rat and artistic expression.  They showed no qualms in spending an entire first act on a post-apocalyptic Earth.  They embraced an elderly hero who used his walker as a weapon.  Making a fairy tale with a female protagonist wasn’t groundbreaking, but it was new ground for the revered animation studio.  However, their new film Brave, retreats into the timidity of a standard princess narrative, limits the view of young girls to merely the issues they have with their mothers, and then teaches a weak lesson about communication.  The movie is filled with lush visuals, a nice sense of humor, and a good heart, but there’s not much bravery in Brave.

A Fight Breaks Out Between Suitors in New Clip from Pixar’s BRAVE

A new clip from Pixar’s latest feature Brave has been released.  The story centers on Princess Merida, a young girl who accidentally sets loose an evil curse when she wishes for the freedom to escape her restrictive life.  This clip plays straight to the younger audience for the film, as a brawl breaks out between suitors that are trying to win the hand of Merida.  Slapstick abounds and I sincerely hope this kind of humor doesn’t permeate throughout the entire film.  We’ve come to expect a smarter and more nuanced type of humor from Pixar that skillfully plays to all ages of the audience, and this kind of funny business isn’t exactly striking the right chord with me.  That said, there’s a lot to love in the previous Brave trailers so I’m eager to finally catch the full film.

Hit the jump to watch the clip.  The film features the voices of Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane, and Julie Walters. Brave opens in 3D on June 22th.

First Images of Dakota Fanning and Emma Thompson in EFFIE

Following a prolonged development process, the Emma Thompson-scripted period piece Effie is finally in the can.  Dakota Fanning stars in this biopic of Effie Gray that centers on her doomed marriage to art critic John Ruskin (Greg Wise) in 1840’s London. Despite her beauty, Ruskin didn’t consummate the marriage and the devastated Gray eventually fell in love with Ruskin’s protégé, painter John Everett Milias (Tom Sturridge).  The first images from the film have no landed online, and they give us a look at Fanning in her period garb and Thompson as Lady Eastlake, an art critic and historian who was also one of Effie’s friends.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  Directed by Richard Laxton (Englishman in New York), the film doesn’t yet have a release date but is expected to show up at a few festivals later this year.

Four clips from Disney-Pixar’s latest film, Brave, have gone online.  The story centers on Princess Merida, a young girl who accidentally sets loose an evil curse when she wishes for the freedom to escape her restrictive life.  All the footage released from this film has looked excellent, and I’m eager to be whisked away to the Scottish Highlands by another (hopefully) well-crafted and effective story from Pixar.  Moreover, this marks the studio’s first film with a female protagonist and their first fairy tale, so hopefully we’re in for a treat.

Hit the jump to watch the clips.  Brave features the voices of Kelly Macdonald,  Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane, and Julie Walters. Brave opens in 3D on June 22nd.

You’re driving down the street, and it’s suddenly blocked off.  You notice these weird yellow signs with nonsensical letters or numbers.  There’s unusual glow lighting up a neighborhood you can’t usually see from your house.  What you might have here is a film company shooting in your town.  It happens a lot, and you never know where they might pop up…until now.

The following is a semi-comprehensive list of films currently shooting, what they’re shooting, and where they’re shooting.  We’ll be telling you where you might get to see the very famous, the kinda famous and (if all goes well) the soon-to-be famous. While we can’t list every single movie, television show, or student film in production, you’ll get a pretty good idea of what the heck is going on where all those people are buzzing about.  Want to know where in the world are Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Woody Harrelson, and Leonardo DiCaprio?
