Alice Finch’s Massive and Detailed Lego Hogwarts Sculpture is Absolutely Magical

by     Posted 1 year, 55 days ago

Lego released an official Harry Potter Hogwarts playset.  It’s okay.  I’m sure it would take a while to build, and it would be nice to have.  It doesn’t hold a candle to what Flickr user Alice Finch did.  I am in absolute awe of what she’s built.  On her Flickr page, she says “It took 400,000 bricks and took 12 months to build.”  I can only imagine how much it cost since so many of the bricks had to be special ordered.  Furthermore, the amount of trial and error must have been staggering.  And the attention to detail is astounding.  Scenes from the books/movies have been recreated throughout sculpture.  Oh, and the castle also lights up.

For our final Toy Fair image article, we’re doing a huge roundup of NECA toy images.  While they’re making figures/toys for all the regular movies and TV shows you’d expect, the highlight of NECA’s 2013 lineup is the 60′s Batman featuring Adam West!  The reason it’s taken so long to get an Adam West Batman is lawyers.  From what I’ve been told, Warner Bros. owns Batman, while 20th Century Fox owns the show.  For years the two companies have been trying to work out an agreement to release DVDs/Blu-rays and new merchandise with little success.  However, late last year, the two companies finally worked out a deal and 2013 should see a lot of new toys and hopefully a home video release.  Which is great news for the fans.

In addition to checking out the first 60′s Batman toy in quite some time, you can also see new toys for Aliens, A Christmas Story, Captain America, Michael Keaton’s Batman, Carrie, Gremlins, E.T., Harry Potter, Hulk, Iron Man, Pacific Rim, Predator, Prometheus, Scarface, Rambo, The Hobbit, The Hunger Games, Thor, and a lot more.

Over 30 Pics from the New HARRY POTTER Platform 9 3/4 Shop at Kings Cross Station in London

by     Posted 1 year, 109 days ago

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you know Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross Station in London is extremely important to young wizards, as that’s where one departs for Hogwarts via the Hogwarts Express.  In response to the worldwide popularity of Harry Potter, years ago Kings Cross installed an actual 9 3/4 sign and a half trolley lodged in a wall so fans could visit the station and take fun pictures.  However, with the station doing a massive renovation over the past few years, they just opened a new Harry Potter themed shop near the Platform 9 3/4 sign that’s loaded with Potter paraphernalia.  Since I’m in London right now, I decided to check out the shop and take a bunch of pictures.  Hit the jump to check them out.

Do you think you’re a Harry Potter fan?  Did you pay $350 for that 31-disc Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection box set?  You’re not a fan.  Warner Bros. is going to find the true fans (that have lots of money).  EW reports that the studio is releasing Harry Potter: Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey (never mind that I’m pretty sure can’t have two colons in the same title).  The eight-volume collection is designed to resemble a bookshelf at Hogwarts; “Six of the books focus on the workings of the creative departments behind the films — wardrobe, props, special effects, and the like — while the seventh is a commemorative keepsake offering an intimate look at the relationships that developed between the cast and crew over the decade it took to produce all eight films. But the best part by far is the eighth book: a scale replica of The Monster Book of Monsters (don’t worry, it doesn’t bite — I hope).”  I have no idea how that’s worth $1,000.

But maybe it’s worth $600?  The set is currently 40% off at Amazon, and you can click here to pre-order it.  The set is limited to 3,000 editions worldwide, and will be released on December 4th.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

Cosplay at London Comic-Con: Check Out Over 100 Pictures Featuring STAR WARS, DOCTOR WHO, BATMAN, PORTAL and More

by     Posted 1 year, 177 days ago

One of my favorite things about Comic-Con are all the people that cosplay.  Since I’d never been to a convention outside the United States, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I went to London Comic-Con yesterday afternoon.  Would anyone dress up?  Are fans in London the same as the rest of the world?  After spending hours walking around the convention, I’m happy to report geeks and nerds are the same no matter where you live.

However, while many at London Comic-Con cosplay, I found more people dressed up as their favorite anime/manga/video game character instead of a movie/TV show character.  Since I only attended London Comic-Con yesterday, it’s possible that over the weekend, the percentage would be the same.  Either way, some of the costumes were pretty great, so hit the jump to check out about 100 pictures including Doctor Who, The Last Airbender, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Thor, Portal, Batman, Zelda, Mortal Kombat, and a lot more.

Toby Jones Talks THE GIRL, the Process of Finding Alfred Hitchcock, THE HUNGER GAMES, HARRY POTTER, and More

by     Posted 1 year, 184 days ago

Starring Toby Jones as Alfred Hitchcock and Sienna Miller as Tippi Hedren, HBO’s The Girl tells the unnerving story of the director’s obsessive relationship with his leading lady, during the making of The Birds and Marnie, with stunning and spot-on performances from its two leads.  As Hitchcock became obsessed with the impossible dream of winning the real woman’s love, her rejection of his misguided attempts only added to his obsession, putting both their careers and personal lives in jeopardy.

During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, actor Toby Jones talked about how he approached playing the iconic filmmaker, what most helped him in bringing the mysterious and eclectic man to life, the process of finding the right look, working with his co-star Sienna Miller, what a relief it was to get Tippi Hedren’s support of the film, if he’s curious to see Anthony Hopkins’ performance of Hitchcock, his first exposure to the filmmaker’s work, and why he thinks there’s such a fascination with what goes on behind the scenes in Hollywood.  He also talked about his involvement in the Harry Potter and The Hunger Games franchises, and how lucky he feels to have the career that he has.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

September turns out to be D-Day for sexy Blu-ray sets. Even with the unfortunate delay of The Avengers Phase 1, we’ve still got giant collections for Titanic, James Bond, Indiana Jones and Alfred Hitchcock. The good people at Warner Bros – prepping the Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection to kick off the fun – likely realized early on that they needed to bring their A-game to compete, especially with the series so recently ending and a glut of other Potter DVDs and Blu-rays readily available. Looking at the new set, however, “A-game” is an understatement. It’s more like “exercising the nuclear option.” Good luck making a splash with this 600-pound gorilla in the room. HARRY POTTER Retrospective Video Recaps the Entire Film Series

by     Posted 1 year, 230 days ago

The most successful film franchise of all time will be available on home video in one nifty box set early next week with the release of the Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection, and a devoted fan has put together a rather impressive video retrospective to mark the occasion.  Titled “Mischief Managed,” the video goes through all eight film adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s wondrous series, with scenes accompanied by the franchise’s various scores.  It’s a great watch for Harry Potter fans, but it’s also interesting to see the different directors’ visions back-to-back.  The story gets dark quite fast, but it’s neat to see it progress from the colorful, faithful touch of Chris Columbus on the first two films, to Alfonso Cuaron’s inventive and playful twist on Azkaban, to the bombastic Britishness of Mike Newell’s Goblet of Fire, and finally David Yates’ grounded yet haunting stamp on the final four films.

Hit the jump to watch the fan-made video retrospective.  The Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection will be available on September 7th.

Guillermo del Toro Talks HAUNTED MANSION and His Love of HARRY POTTER

by     Posted 1 year, 258 days ago

As most of you know, I recently did an epic hour-long video interview with director Guillermo del Toro, and over the past week I’ve been breaking it down into smaller segments. For today’s installment, del Toro talks about the status of Disney’s Haunted Mansion and his love of Harry Potter.  While it’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything on Haunted Mansion, del Toro said:

“I delivered my last draft five weeks ago. I have a meeting with them in three weeks.  I know they like the screenplay.  I need to meet with them in three weeks. That’s what I know. I know their reaction to the draft was good.  We have a bunch of conceptualist art, but you never know, to predict anything else is hard for me to know.”

He goes on to say that while he came on board as a writer and producer, he thinks Disney is waiting for him to say he wants to direct it.  But according to del Toro, “I’m in the middle of Pacific Rim and I don’t know what I’m going to do next.”  More after the jump.

New Clip From the HARRY POTTER WIZARD’S COLLECTION Blu-ray Set; J.K. Rowling to Participate in Live Webcast

by     Posted 1 year, 265 days ago

A new clip from the upcoming Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection Blu-ray and DVD has made it online, featuring Daniel Radcliff (Harry), Rupert Grint (Ron) and director Alfonso Cuarón discussing the third film the series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which Cuarón took over after original director Chris Columbus stepped down.  The clip is part of an epic collection that will span 31 discs, available September 7th.  However, if you want a piece of it immediately, your orders have to be in by Harry’s birthday (meaning today): July 31st.

The film discussed in the clip is a polarizing one for fans, some of whom (myself included) see it as an artistic achievement, and though it is long, it’s exceptionally engaging.  Others simply find it just long, too artsy, and very dark (especially compared to the first two films in the series).  To see the video and learn more behind-the-scenes info about the film and the upcoming collection, hit the jump.  Also, get the scoop on the all-new Harry Potter Reading Club.

A Clip of a Conversation Between J.K. Rowling and Steve Kloves from the Upcoming HARRY POTTER Wizard’s Collection Blu-ray

by     Posted 1 year, 285 days ago

The upcoming Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection Blu-ray box set will cost you a pretty penny ($349.96 worth of pretty pennies on Amazon), but it’s got some exclusive special features you won’t find anywhere else.  One such feature is a conversation between author J.K. Rowling and screenwriter Steve Kloves, who penned all of the movies except for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.  A clip from their conversation has gone online, and now I wish I could watch the whole thing.  I’m not sure I’d pay $349.96 to watch the whole thing, but at least we know there’s going to be worthwhile content in this set.

Hit the jump to watch the clip.  The Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection Blu-ray box set will be available to own on September 7th.

J.K. Rowling’s THE CASUAL VACANCY Book Cover Revealed and New Synopsis

by     Posted 1 year, 293 days ago

We don’t often cover books here at Collider, but when we do, we prefer to talk about J.K. Rowling.  The author of the Harry Potter series and creative mind behind a lot of the franchise’s expanded marketing has a new novel that will be released September 27th.  Rowling’s first adult novel, The Casual Vacancy, concerns a veritable war over an empty seat on the council of the small fictional town of Pagford.  The book is basically guaranteed to be a best-seller, but I’m curious to see how fans will react to a non-Potter story.  The Casual Vacancy promises to be a good test of Rowling’s creative story-telling ability.  Hit the jump to check out the full cover and read the novel’s updated synopsis.
