Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies), Tamsin Egerton (Camelot), and Imogen Poots (Fright Night) have joined Steve Coogan in Michael Winterbottom‘s King of Soho.  Coogan will play real-life club proprietor, real estate developer, and porn publisher Paul Raymond and the comedy drama will focus on his business and personal life.  Per Variety, Raymond earned the name “King of Soho” because his business ventures earned him billions of pounds.  The movie will be Winterbottom and Coogan’s fourth collaboration after 24 Hour Party People, Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, and The Trip.  Winterbottom’s latest film, Trishna, opens in limited release on May 18th.

With many of the major bases covered (Freddy, Michael, Jason), there’s not a lot of great and/or successful horror movies from the 1970’s and 1980’s left to be remade. Oh, there are still tons of films from that era of genre, but it seems that name recognition is a greater driving factor than the films themselves. So it’s no surprise they got around to remaking 1985’s Fright Night, a film that did for vampires what Scream did for slasher films by gently playing with the conventions while reinventing it for a new generation (albeit much more subtly).

And with True Blood, etc. there’s a lot of vampirism in modern culture, so on that level it’s a fitting time for the remake. Craig Gillespie directs the 2011 version, which takes the premise of the original in some interesting and not so interesting directions. Anton Yelchin stars as the boy next door who sees his neighbor (Colin Ferrell) as something of a threat, only for him to be a real life vampire. Imogene Poots, Toni Collette, David Tenant and Christopher Mintz-Plasse co-star. Our review of the 3-D Blu-ray follows after the jump.

With the Toronto International Film Festival in full swing, we have some acquisition news to bring your way tonight. First up, Magnet Releasing announced that it has acquired the worldwide rights to director Bobcat Goldthwait’s God Bless America. Per the press release, Magnet is planning a 2012 theatrical release for the film through Magnolia Pictures’ Ultra VOD program. Starring Joel Murray, Tara Lynne Barr and Mackenzie Brooke Smith, the film follows Frank (Murray), a jobless and potentially dying man whose frustrations manifest themselves via dispatching generally unlikable people. Up next, Celluloid Dreams announced that it has picked up worldwide rights to co-writer/director Dan Algrant’s drama Greetings from Tim Buckley. Starring Penn Badgley, Imogen Poots, Frank Wood, Jessica Stone and Frank Bello, the pic follows Jeff Buckley (Badgley) as he romances a young woman (Poots) while attempting to understanding the father who abandoned him. The film is currently shooting in New York which means that a 2012 release could well be within reach. There’s plenty to like about the original 1985 version of Fright Night: the performances from Chris Sarandon and Roddy McDowall, the great practical horror effects, and the thoughtful subtext about teens coming to grips with their burgeoning sexuality and the familiar inadequacies that come with it.  The remake of Fright Night ditches almost all of these aspects but still manages to be an entertaining creature feature filled with excellent performances, plenty of humor, and some nice surprises as it tries update the film for a new audience.

In the re-imagining of Fright Night, teenager Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) learns that his new next door neighbor, Jerry Dandrige (Colin Farrell), is really a vicious vampire, slaughtering people for their blood. Only problem is that no one, including his mother (Toni Collette) and girlfriend Amy (Imogen Poots), believe him. Unable to convince anyone of the imminent danger, Charley looks to popular Las Vegas illusionist and self-proclaimed vampire expert Peter Vincent (David Tennant) for help, before finally taking matters into his own hands.

At the film’s press day, co-stars Anton Yelchin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (who plays Evil Ed) and Imogen Poots talked about updating the Fright Night story and characters for a Twilight world, the appeal of making a scary vampire film, hanging out with each other and bonding while shooting in Albuquerque, and the freedom that director Craig Gillespie embraces in the performances from his actors. Comes a Bright Day has all the ingredients to be a great product of the UK independent film system.  First of all, it’s a crime drama with a dark sense of humor—”an offbeat, coming-of age love-story set during the armed robbery of London’s most exclusive jewelers.”  The cast is led by up-and-comers Craig Roberts (Submarine) and Imogen Poots (Fright Night), surrounded by veteran actors Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy) and Timothy Spall (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) and fresh face Anthony Welsh.  And the official website is packed with material to spread the word about the film, including images, featurettes, and a production blog.

A number of images from director Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night remake have been released. The film centers on a teenager (Anton Yelchin) whose neighbor (Colin Farrell) turns out to be a vampire. We’ve seen some of these images before, but a few of them are new. When Farrell’s in the right movie, he can be great, and the supporting cast isn’t too shabby. I’m interested to see the actor’s take on the vampire craze.

In addition to Farrell and Yelchin, Fright Night also stars Toni Collette, David Tennant, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Dave Franco and Imogen Poots. The film hits theaters in 3D on August 19^th.

Four international character banners for Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night remake have gone online.  The film stars Anton Yelchin as a suburban teenager who must combat his sinister new neighbor (Colin Farrell) because said neighbor is a murderous vampire.  The posters feature corny taglines but I’ve heard good things about Marti Noxon’s script and I like the cast (which also includes David Tennant, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintze-Plasse, and Toni Collette) so I don’t really mind if the advertising is unimpressive.

DreamWorks Pictures is bringing their 3D reimagining of Fright Night to Comic-Con this year in a big way. The studio announced today that in addition to a Hall H panel featuring stars Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Imogen Poots, as well as director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Marti Noxon, a special advance screening of the film will take place at the convention. If that’s not enough, they’re also throwing a “fan appreciation party,” which I can only assume involves people dressing up as vampires. Oh and punch. Lots of punch.

In celebration of the event, the studio is offering two fans the chance to win a VIP trip to San Diego for the convention. As a tie-in to their “Fright Night Feeding Frenzy” social media campaign, the fan that “spreads the frenzy the farthest” each week wins a prize. Hit the jump to read the full press release. A new trailer for Fright Night has gone online.  I’m not really sure what to expect from the film.  Yes, it looks like there’s a lot more action than the original and while I would be slightly worried that the update may be trying too hard to be cool, I’ve heard positive word both on the script and reports from the set.  Here’s hoping it all comes together.

When you remake a movie that almost every horror fan loves, you’re playing with fire and it’s almost impossible not get burned.  After all, if you stick too close to the original, people will say, “why did you remake it.”  And if you decide to change too much, fans will complain about what was left out.  However, after watching twenty minutes of director Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night remake in his editing suite last week, I’m very confident he’s walking the fine line that will make the large majority very happy.  More about the footage after the jump and here’s the just released trailer.

DreamWorks has released the first trailer for Craig Gillespie’s 3D remake of Fright Night which stars Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Toni Collette, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, David Tennant and Imogen Poots,  I did a set visit for Fright Night and recently watched twenty minutes of the film in a Santa Monica editing suite.  I’m confident the remake is going to be cool.  Judge for yourself by checking out the trailer after the jump along with the poster.  Fright Night hits theaters August 19th.

The first images from Craig Gillespie’s 3D remake of Fright Night have gone online.  The story centers on a teenager (Anton Yelchin) who discovers that his neighbor (Colin Farrell) is a vampire.  And not a cuddly Twilight vampire.  A he’s-murdering-people-because-he’s-a-vampire vampire. There’s nothing too spectacular in the shots aside from a fangy Colin Farrell threatening Anton Yelchin, but there’s also some shots of co-stars Imogen Poots and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

A couple casting stories for you today. Orlando Bloom, Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later) and Kerry Condon (The Last Station) have joined the cast of writer/director William Nunez’s feature film debut The Laureate. The film tracks the open love triangle between war poet Robert Graves (Bloom), his artist wife Nancy Nicholson (Condon) and American poet Laura Riding (Poots). Screen Daily (via The Playlist) reports that Bloom will topline the film for Media 8, which plans to look for financiers at the European Film Market next month.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Jeremy Northam, and Christopher Walken will star in the indie drama A Late Quartet.  Last August, we reported that Ethan Hawke had joined the project, but it now appears that he has dropped out.  The Playlist previously reported that Hoffman and Keener were on board.  According to the press release, the four actors will play “a world-renowned string quartet struggling to stay together as they mark their 25th anniversary in the face of illness, competing egos and insuppressible lust.”  Imogen Poots (Centurion) and Liraz Charhi (Fair Game) will also star.  Filming is set to begin later this month in New York City.  Yaron Zilberman will make his feature film directing debut from his own script.
