Last week, I admitted to being among those who become hopelessly caught up in the Olympic Summer Games. One week later and things have taken an unexpected turn for the pathetic as I now find myself legitimately concerned with the “Medal Count”. As if it has any sort of bearing on my own life in any way, shape, and/or form, I’m consistently pulling for the U.S. to overtake China not only in total medals, but also in total Gold medals. In short, whether by virtue of patriotism or just sheer boredom, living vicariously through world-class athletes is what my life has come to.
Sports talk aside, awaiting you on the other end of this week’s Top 5 are brief recaps and links to Steve’s Total Recall video interviews with Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, and more, the first full trailer for James Bond’s Skyfall, our multi-part interview with the great Guillermo del Toro, the news that The Hobbit will be a trilogy, and all of our Saturn Awards interviews including talks with writer/director Drew Goddard and Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan.

Opening this Friday is director Len Wiseman‘s remake of Total Recall. Based on the short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale by Philip K. Dick, Total Recall stars Colin Farrell in the role originated by Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the film, Farrell stars as Douglas Quaid, a man who is bored with his life (even though he’s married to Kate Beckinsale) and seeks to have adventurous memories implanted in his brain. However, after visiting Recall, both friends and family are after him for different reasons. But the big problem is he doesn’t know what’s real. The film also stars Jessica Biel, John Cho, Bill Nighy, and Bryan Cranston.
The other day I got to speak with Jessica Biel here in Los Angeles. We talked about how the film is non-stop action, what she did to prepare for the role, the practical sets and how it wasn’t a CG fest, and what it’s like to do so much press. In addition, if you follow me on Twitter you know I always offer our readers the chance to send in questions. When I said I’d be speaking with Biel, people wanted to know if she’d consider playing April O’Neil in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and why she really dropped out of The Wolverine. Both answers are at the end of the interview. Hit the jump to watch.

Director Len Wiseman’s remake of Total Recall hits theaters next weekend, and Sony has released five clips and 15 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage from the film in anticipation of the release. Colin Farrell takes over the role originated by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and judging by these clips and previous trailers, Wiseman’s got a whole lotta sci-fi action in store for moviegoers. So much so that the director recently revealed to Steve that he put together a director’s cut for the Blu-ray that includes 17 minutes of extra footage.
Hit the jump to check out the clips and behind-the-scenes footage, and be sure to check out Steve’s Comic-Con interviews with stars Jessica Biel and Bryan Cranston. The film also stars Kate Beckinsale, Bill Nighy, and John Cho. Total Recall opens on August 3rd.

Emboldened by the success of Valentine’s Day, Garry Marshall took another crack at the holiday-based all-star anthology in 2011, with similarly repulsive results. This time, though, movie-goers commendably ignored him (and hopefully quashed plans for Columbus Day or whatever the hell was coming next). Of course, it’s never a good idea to interpret the commercial failure of a terrible movie as anything more than an aberration. But in this case, there was an encouraging sense that the world had finally revolted against a sub-genre populated by cynical, bald-faced cash-grabs.
And indeed, New Year’s Eve is the romantic comedy distilled to its basest form; a film that trots out a dizzying array of A-listers and expects applause, while abandoning time-consuming chores like character, story and dialogue. Hit the jump for the full review.

Last weekend at Comic-Con, I got to sit down with Jessica Biel for an extended video interview. While she was in San Diego to promote director Len Wiseman‘s Total Recall (she plays Melina), during our wide ranging conversation we talked about her favorite movies, what it was like to make Total Recall, will David O. Russell‘s Nailed every get released, The A-Team‘s disappointing box office, director Sacha Gervasi‘s Hitchcock (she plays Vera Miles), what she collects, and a lot more. Hit the jump to watch.

A few days ago we reported Jessica Biel had been offered the role of Viper in director James Mangold’s (Walk the Line) The Wolverine. However, sources have informed us that talks have broken down between Biel and 20th Century Fox and the studio is now talking to other actresses. With production on The Wolverine set to begin next month in Australia and on location in Japan, you can expect a lot more casting news in the coming weeks. Hit the jump for what we know so far about the film.

Returning to Comic-Con for a big Hall H presentation, with its August 3rd theatrical release imminent, Total Recall is now finished and ready for audiences, and the fans were able to get a good idea of what to expect when it hits the big screen. The film is about a factory worker, named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), who begins to suspect that he is a spy after a visit to Rekall – a company that provides its clients with implanted fake memories of a life they would like to have led – goes wrong and he finds himself on the run.
During a press conference with director Len Wiseman and actors Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel and Bryan Cranston, they spoke about how they decided what to keep from the original, identifying with such over-the-top material, what excited them about the script, Cranston’s horrible case of pink eye in both eyes (that had to later be digitally removed from the film), the theme of paranoia about the invasion of technology in our society, building a futuristic world, and whether the sci-fi genre still has a lower level of respect than other genres. Jessica Biel also said that it’s still a bit too early to say that she’s signed on as Viper for the Wolverine film. Check out what they had to say after the jump. Also, check out our recap of the Total Recall panel.

It’s rare for a film to come to consecutive Comic-Cons, but Total Recall showed up last year at the beginning of production, and now it’s returned with its theatrical release only weeks away. We’ve seen multiple trailers, TV spots, images, and featurettes, so I was curious what a panel would have to offer. It’s return to Comic-Con is part of a final big push. Having seen both panels, and being less-than-impressed the first time around, I was curious to see if a sneak peek at the completed footage would get me on board.

Early reports have 7th Heaven alumna Jessica Biel having been offered a role in The Wolverine. We recently reported on a slew of casting additions to James Mangold’s (Walk the Line) film starring Hugh Jackman in the title role. Now it looks like a major player in the plot may have been cast. Biel is reportedly being offered the role of Viper, a character often found conflicting with The Avengers as a high-ranking officer in Hydra, but one that has a complex backstory with Wolverine as well. Hit the jump for more on Biel’s potential role.

With director Len Wiseman’s Total Recall reboot less than a month away, a new clip has popped up online. Unfortunately, the clip just rehashes the same extended action sequence we’ve seen in the trailer. Colin Farrell stars as Douglas Quaid, a man who is bored with his life and seeks to have adventurous memories implanted in his brain. In the clip, we watch as Farrell’s plans go awry and he goes all Jason Bourne on a number of faceless federal police. It’s much less sexy than Farrell vs co-star Kate Beckinsale, which we saw in this earlier clip. The only thing tempting me to see the movie at this point is some Beckinsale vs Jessica Biel action. Total Recall, also starring Bill Nighy, John Cho and Bryan Cranston, debuts August 3rd. Hit the jump to watch the new(ish) clip.

If you missed yesterday’s poster for director Pascal Laugier’s horror mystery The Tall Man, you’re in luck: today we have a brand new poster along with an international trailer. The picture stars Jessica Biel (The Illusionist) as Julia Denning, a nurse of a small mining town that’s seen better days. When local children keep disappearing, no one seems to be able to solve the mystery and instead blame the shadowy figure known as the Tall Man. When Julia’s son David (Jakob Davies) disappears, she’ll go to any lengths to find him and learn the secret of the abductions. The Tall Man, also starring Jodelle Ferland, Stephen McHattie and William B. Davies, is set to open August 31st. Hit the jump to check out the trailer and new poster.

A new theatrical trailer for director Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake has been released. This trailer includes quite a few nods to the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger-fronted iteration of the story, with everyone’s favorite three-breasted woman making an appearance (kind of). There are a couple of groan worthy one-liners that are apparently a requirement for 90% of action movies, but I’m hoping Colin Farrell’s charisma will outweigh the dialogue flaws. The sci-fi world that Wiseman’s built here looks impressive, and we definitely get the sense that there are going to be a lot of action sequences to marvel at. I’m interested to see what makes Wiseman’s remake a story worth telling and not just a rehash of the original, so hopefully this Total Recall’s a fun ride.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer, and if you missed any of Steve’s set visit coverage click here. The film also stars Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, and Bryan Cranston. Total Recall opens on August 3rd.

Apologies for the lack of a Top 5 last weekend. I was so busy prepping to get married, and eventually getting married, that I had to cash in a “sick day” on the best weekend job a person could ask for. The good news is that I have no intention on making this a routine (either the “sick day” or the getting married) so we should be good to go on the regular Top 5 installments for the foreseeable future. The bad news is that I doubt the substantial pile of wedding cards filled with cash/gift cards will catch on as a routine either. You win some you lose some, I guess.
In this week’s return edition you can find a recap of our Total Recall set visit coverage, a new trailer for Breaking Bad Season 5 alongside a fan-made recap of Seasons 1-4, continuing coverage of Prometheus such as Blu-ray details, a sequel recap and more, the first full trailer for Resident Evil: Retribution, and our Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter set visit. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each.
