When you think of a modern day take on Stephen King’s classic horror novel Carrie, the actress Judy Greer doesn’t immediately come to mind.  The actress is best known for her scene-stealing comedic work on Arrested Development and Archer and in films like 13 Going on 30 and Elizabethtown, but she’s also stretched her dramatic chops to great effect, most recently in 2011’s The Descendants.  For director Kimberly Peirce’s Carrie, Greer plays the role of the sympathetic gym teacher Miss Desjardin, a character who goes out of her way to try and aid the shy and bullied Carrie, played by Chloe Grace Moretz.  Of course, things don’t exactly go smoothly.

Last summer I visited the set Toronto set of Carrie along with a handful of other journalists, and Greer sat down with us to discuss her work on the project.  The actress talked about her unlikely casting, how she altered her performance after seeing Moretz’s portrayal of Carrie, how the new film differs in tone and focus from De Palma’s adaptation, what Peirce brings to the pic as a female director, arguing to change her character’s fate, and more.  Hit the jump to read on.

First Full Trailer for CARRIE Starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore

Screen Gems has released the first full trailer for director Kimberly Peirce’s (Boys Don’t Cry) upcoming remake Carrie.  Based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, the film revolves around a young girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) who discovers she has telekinetic powers and who is abused at home by her ultra-religious mother (Julianne Moore) and tormented at school by her peers.  This full trailer gives us a much better idea of what Peirce’s vision for the story looks like (it’s almost too revealing), and it’s clear that this Carrie is going to be quite intense.  There’s a bit of a superhero bent to the scenes in which Carrie is discovering her powers, and Peirce doesn’t look to be holding back when it comes to the more violent aspects of the story.  The highlight, though, is the scenes between Moretz and Moore, which promise to be sufficiently disturbing.  Matching the quality of Brian De Palma‘s masterful 1976 adaptation is a tall order, but hopefully Peirce brings an intriguing angle to her iteration of the King classic.

Director Matt Reeves (Let Me In) has added yet another cast member to his sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but this time it’s on the side of the apes.  Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) and Keri Russell are already set as the human leads in the follow-up, which takes place 15 years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but now Judy Greer (The Descendants) has been tapped to play the female ape lead opposite Andy Serkis’ Caesar.  Greer’s character, Cornelia, was briefly introduced in the first film as a potential love interest for Caesar, but it’s been expanded for the follow-up where Greer will handle the performance capture duties.  Hit the jump for more.

Back in 2003, Mordechai Jefferson Carver (Adam Goldberg) took on the nefarious plan of Damian Claus (Andy Dick), the evil Gentile son of Santa Claus who sought to destroy Hanukkah (and Kwanzaa) in order to claim December for Christians as a Christmas-only month.  Ten years later, The Hebrew Hammer has plans to return in order to take on an even greater threat to the Chosen People: Hitler himself.  Goldberg will return in the appropriately titled The Hebrew Hammer vs Hitler, along with Judy Greer, who plays his wife, Esther Bloomenbergensteinenthal.  Hit the jump to see what Goldberg had to say about the project.

Believe it or not, the only time the voice cast of FX’s animated spy series Archer gets together is during events like Comic-Con or the TCA press tour.  So it’s a special treat for them to participate in Archer Live!, an in-person event that not only lets the cast members get out of the recording booth and riff on each other in person, but lets them interact with their rabid fanbase in a variety of ways.  Outstanding vocal talent H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Chris Parnell, Amber Nash and Lucky Yates were on hand along with executive producer Matt Thompson to hold a fan Q&A, reenact some favorite scenes, preview episodes of the upcoming fourth season and take us all into the danger zone.

Season three of Archer will be available on DVD and Blu-ray starting January 8th.  The season four premiere of Archer debuts on FX at 10PM ET/PT on Thursday, January 17th.  Hit the jump for a recap of Archer Live! and a preview of season four.

First Trailer for CARRIE Remake Starring Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore

The first trailer for director Kimberly Peirce’s remake of Carrie has been released and it’s a doozy!  The ending of the original Brian De Palma picture is famous in its own right, not to mention everyone who has read the Stephen King novel on which the films are based.  But clearly Peirce knew that the stakes had been raised.  As a disembodied voice sings over scenes of devastation, we hear bits of dialogue from the film, the speakers referring to the source of the destruction just as the camera inexorably races toward it.  When we see her, we realize, this ain’t your Mama’s Carrie.

JEFF, WHO LIVES AT HOME Blu-ray Review

I have yet to embrace fully the mumblecore genre. I want to love it, having come of age as a filmmaker working on the indies of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, but perhaps that is my problem: I see mumblecore as the natural progression of so many films on which I crewed that never saw the light of day. Like any other genre, simply creating a movie and actually executing a good movie are two different things, and too often mumblecore-type pics feel like a means to an end rather than well-crafted films. Which does not mean the best of the bunch are not good, entertaining films, exactly how I felt about Jeff, Who Lives At Home (and I was not a fan of the Duplass brothers’ break-out picture, The Puffy Chair).  Hit the jump for my review of the Blu-ray.

Comic-Con: ARCHER Panel Screens Season 4 Episode with Creator Adam Reed, H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Chris Parnell, and Amber Nash

I’m ready to say that Archer is the funniest show on television.  There is no show that makes me laugh harder and more often.  The panel was billed as a screening—given that season three just ended and there is no premiere date set for season 4, I had accepted the fact they would probably show one of the better season three episodes.  But I was pleasantly surprised they somehow got “Coyote Lovely,”  an episode from the upcoming season, ready in time to show us.

Production has officially started in Toronto for Boys Don’t Cry director Kimberly Peirce’s remake of Stephen King’s Carrie, starring Chloe Grace Moretz. Up until now, we’ve only been able to bring you casting news on the horror picture, which stars Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday, Gabriella Wilde and Ansel Elgort. The new press release provides a few more plot details, which leads us to believe they’re sticking quite closely to the source material.  I’m not 100% up to date on the differences between the novel and the 1976 Brian De Palma film, but Moretz recently stated that the new version will be closer to the book.  Hit the jump for more plot details on Peirce’s version of Carrie, along with a first look at Moretz in the title role.

We’ve got a couple of casting stories to share this afternoon.  First up, Judy Greer and Portia Doubleday (Youth in Revolt) have been added to the cast of director Kimberly Peirce’s Carrie remake. Chloe Moretz is set as the lead in the adaptation, which will apparently adhere closer to Stephen King’s novel than Brian De Palma’s 1976 adaptation.  We first heard about Greer being considered for a role a few weeks ago, but the studio denied that any casting decisions had been made at the time.  Now MGM/Screen Gems has confirmed that Greer will play gym teacher Miss Desjardin while Doubleday will take on the role of bad girl Chris Hargensen.  Julianne Moore is set to play Moretz’s troubled mother in the pic, which begins production in a few short weeks.

The cast is really starting to shape up for Kimberley Peirce’s (Boys Don’t Cry) remake of the classic horror film, Carrie.  The new adaptation of the Stephen King source novel already features Chloe Moretz in the title role with Julianne Moore playing Carrie’s conservative and controlling mother.  Now, it looks like one of Carrie’s classmate tormenters are in the process of being cast, with Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers) having recently joined.  Judy Greer (13 Going on 30) is reportedly in talks to play the pivotal role of the girls’ gym teacher.  It’s not known yet whether the Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Big Love) adaptation will follow Brian De Palma’s original to the letter or if some artistic license will be taken.  Hit the jump for more info on the Carrie casting news. [Update: We've received word that Ivana Baquero is no longer in consideration for the role.  Also, no casting decisions have yet been made for the role of the gym teacher.]

THE DESCENDANTS Blu-ray Review

descendants-movie-image-slice-01

Living in paradise is not as glamorous or care free as many outsiders may believe, and the King family is a perfect example of it.  The Descendants, an Alexander Payne film adapted from the novel of the same name by Kaui Hart Hemmings, follows Hawaii-based lawyer Matt King (George Clooney) on his painful, yet often comedic quest to reunite his family after his wife suffers a tragic accident.  While the film tugs on heart strings towards the end, it mostly infuses audiences with almost uncomfortable laughter and anticipation for when the story will kick into gear.  Hit the jump for our review of The Descendants on Blu-ray.

3 Clips from JEFF WHO LIVES AT HOME Starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms

From writers/directors Jay and Mark Duplass (Cyrus) comes Jeff Who Lives at Home, a coming of age comedy for two men who are already well beyond their youth.  Starring Jason Segel (The Muppets) and Ed Helms (The Hangover) as two brothers, with Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise) as their mother, Jeff Who Lives at Home follows Jeff (Segel) as he searches for meaning in his life and inadvertently helps his brother, Pat (Helms) discover a truth of his own. We have three clips from the film that highlight the very funny rapport between Helms and his onscreen wife Judy Greer, a fairly awkward phone conversation between Segel and Sarandon, and the giant Segel uncomfortably riding in a tiny Porche. I was already pretty sold on the dramatic stuff from the trailers, but these clips focus on the lighter side of things and the jokes land solidly, so hopefully that carries over through the entirety of the movie. Jeff Who Lives at Home opens March 16th.  Hit the jump to check out the clips.

Fans of Party Down will be happy to see Ken Marino once again returning to the small screen in ABC’s comedy pilot American Judy by Judy Greer (Archer). The project follows Greer’s character, a newly married suburban housewife who struggles to raise her step-kids, deal with her mother-in-law and stay out of the line of fire of her husband’s ex-wife, who happens to be the town sheriff. Marino will star as Greer’s husband. Based on Greer’s real-life events, American Judy will be written and executive produced by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont.

In other casting news, The Descendants’ Amara Miller will be moving to 1600 Penn in the NBC presidential family comedy pilot. Starring as Marigold, the youngest daughter of the President (Bill Pullman), Miller will play one half of the family’s twins. Hit the jump for more on each project.
