TOP 5: ENDER’S GAME Set Visit, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB Trailer, Stop Asking for Bryan Cranston to Play Lex Luthor, DIVERGENT Trailer, INTERSTELLAR Plot Info

After weeks of deliberation, last night I made the decision to resume my Netflix subscription. Today, after having watched the pilot episode of its original series Orange is the New Black, I can say with confidence that was $7.99 well spent. Only one episode in and I can absolutely see myself spending the rest of this Labor Day weekend devouring the remaining 12 episodes with ease. While you’ve likely read some of the show’s rave reviews elsewhere already, I’ll lend my own endorsement by saying that the pilot offers a near-perfect balance of humor and drama. Moreover, the pace is never slowed by consistent cutting between Piper Chapman’s (Taylor Schilling) past transgressions and present consequences. If anything, it serves to heighten the depressing reality of the situation we find Chapman in. All said, I give the pilot high marks all around and myself a disappointed facepalm for not having got in on the series sooner.

My reintroduction to Netflix aside, this week’s Top 5 highlights part one of our Ender’s Game set visit, the first trailer for Dallas Buyers Club, an editorial by Matt imploring all of us to stop asking for Bryan Cranston to play Lex Luthor, the first trailer for Divergent, and a little bit of extra plot info regarding Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar. As you may expect, a brief recap and link to everything I just mentioned can be found after the jump.

New Featurette for DIVERGENT Explains the World of the Dystopian Adaptation

If you’re having trouble keeping all of your dystopian YA adaptations straight, you’re in luck.  Summit Entertainment has released a featurette for director Neil Burger’s new film Divergent, clearly explaining the world of the film and how it stands apart from other YA fare.  Based on the novel by Veronica Roth, the futuristic thriller takes place in a society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities. Tris (Shailene Woodley) is a young girl who doesn’t fit into any of the pre-assigned groups and faces grave consequences due to her status as a “Divergent.”  This featurette further illuminates the intriguing world of Divergent, as Roth and stars Kate Winslet, Shailene Woodley, and Theo James offer their thoughts on the film.  Roth’s novel is a really fun page-turner that’s surprisingly violent, so hopefully Burger’s film adaptation delivers.

Summit Entertainment premiered the first trailer for director Neil Burger’s (Limitless) adaptation of the Veronica Roth novel Divergent on MTV’s VMA’s tonight, and we have it here for your viewing pleasure. The futuristic thriller takes place in a society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities. Tris (Shailene Woodley) is a young girl who doesn’t fit into any of the pre-assigned groups and faces grave consequences due to her status as a “Divergent.”  This trailer is incredibly brief, and while it’s very clearly aimed at a younger audience, we do get a hint of the more violent aspects of the story and the severity of Tris’ situation.  Roth’s novel is quite a compelling page-turner, and my hope is that Burger has successfully transferred the book’s more intriguing aspects to the screen.  It’s tough to suss out much from this short trailer, but Kate Winslet definitely looks to be on point as the stern Jeanine.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer and to check out a handy infographic that clearly explains the world of Divergent. The film also stars Theo James, Miles TellerJai Courtney, Ashley Judd, Tony Goldwyn, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, Ansel Elgort, Christian Madsen, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Ben Lamb, and Amy Newbold. Divergent opens in traditional theaters and IMAX on March 21, 2014.

First Footage from DIVERGENT Starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet

The first footage from director Neil Burger’s (Limitless) adaptation of the Veronica Roth novel Divergent has landed online ahead of the full trailer debut this coming Sunday, August 25th.  The futuristic thriller takes place in a society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities.  Tris (Shailene Woodley) is a young girl who doesn’t fit into any of the pre-assigned groups and faces grave consequences due to her status as a “Divergent.”  This brief teaser doesn’t reveal much, but fans of the book will be happy to finally see the characters in action.  I was able to visit the Chicago set of the film earlier this year, and as a fan of the book I was encouraged by the direction Burger has taken.  It’s biggest obstacle, however, will be avoiding being labeled as a Hunger Games copycat.  Hopefully the full trailer does a nice job of distinguishing this as a wholly separate–and thoroughly entertaining–dystopian adventure.

Hit the jump to watch the teaser, and check back to see the trailer after its debut on MTV’s VMA’s on Sunday, August 25th.  If you missed Steve’s interview with Burger and Roth from Comic-Con, click here.  The film also stars Kate WinsletTheo James, Miles TellerJai CourtneyAshley JuddTony GoldwynRay StevensonZoe KravitzMaggie QMekhi PhiferAnsel ElgortChristian MadsenBen Lloyd-HughesBen Lamb, and Amy Newbold.  Divergent opens on March 21, 2014.

It may only be August, but studios are already starting to make moves with regards to their awards fare.  Today, the first official image from Thank You for Smoking and Up in the Air writer/director Jason Reitman’s upcoming drama Labor Day has been released.  Based on the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name, the film takes place over the course of a Labor Day weekend and tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who convinces his reclusive mother to take in a drifter, who turns out to be an escaped convict on the run.  Kate Winslet plays the mother and Josh Brolin plays the convict, and Labor Day sees Reitman navigating decidedly different territory as he weaves the character drama with shades of a thriller.  The film also involves flashback and flashforwards, with Tobey Maguire playing the grown-up version of the young boy.  Given its pedigree, the pic is sure to be a contender in this year’s awards race.

Hit the jump to check out the image.  The film also stars Gattlin Griffith, J.K. Simmons, Clark Gregg, and James Van Der BeekLabor Day opens in limited release on December 25th before expanding wide on January 31st.

Always a nice casting report when you can open with Kate Winslet:

  • Kate Winslet and Judy Davis have signed on to star in The Dressmaker, a project that Australian writer/director Jocelyn Moorhouse (Proof) describes as “Unforgiven with a sewing machine.”
  • Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class), Joel Courtney (Super 8), and Ally Sheedy have signed on to star opposite Mitchel Musso, Bridger Zadina, Grant Harvey, and newcomer Dani Knights in Sins of Our Youth, the story of four teenage boys who accidentally murder a young boy.  Twin brothers Edmund Entin and Gary Entin will write and direct.

Theo James Lands Male Lead in DIVERGENT; Aaron Eckhart, Miles Teller, and Ray Stevenson Circling Roles

by     Posted 1 year, 39 days ago

It’s a casting bonanza for director Neil Burger’s (The Illusionist) anticipated adaptation of the popular YA novel Divergent.  The past couple of days have seen the likes of Jai Courtney (A Good Day to Die Hard), Maggie Q (Nikita), Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class), and Ansel Elgort (Carrie remake) join the film’s cast, and now another slew of actors are signing on.  The story takes place in a futuristic society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities, and Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) has long been set in the lead role of Tris Prior, a young girl who doesn’t fit into any of the pre-assigned groups and faces termination due to her status as a “Divergent.”

Though the film’s plot has drawn similarities to The Hunger Games, the book received a fair amount of praise from critics, and it’s telling that the film has attracted such talent as Woodley and Kate Winslet.  Now some other impressive actors are signing on, including Theo James who has nabbed the highly coveted male lead.  Hit the jump for more.

Six-time Oscar nominee and Oscar-winner Kate Winslet is negotiating for a role in Divergent, the adaptation of the young adult novel from author Veronica Roth.  Directed by Neil Burger (Limitless), Divergent is a dystopian tale that stars Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) as a sixteen-year-old girl who is forced to compete in a ritual that divides her family and just so happens to fall in love with a frustrating young man along the way. This would mark the first franchise starter for Winslet as Summit is planning a trilogy, but it is still unknown which part she would play.  Divergent is set to open March 21, 2014.  Hit the jump for more.

The first images from the R-rated comedy omnibus Movie 43 have gone online.  The film has been in development for years since it takes a while to find time in the schedules of a gigantic cast whose ranks include Emma Stone, Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, Terrence Howard, Halle Berry, and Jason Sudeikis just to name a few.  The films in the collection were directed by Brett Ratner, Elizabeth Banks, Mike Judge, Peter Farrelly, Bob Odenkirk, Steve Baker, Damon Escot, and more.  While I’m sure the collection will be a mixed bag, these images show off the potential for some hilarious short films.  There will also be a major plotline, but Farrelly, who also produced the film with Charlie Wessler, wouldn’t tell EW what it is.

Jason Reitman’s LABOR DAY Starts Production; Updated Synopsis Released

by     Posted 1 year, 313 days ago

jason-reitman-labor-day

Director Jason Reitman has commenced production on his next feature, the drama Labor Day.  The film is based on the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name and centers on a 13-year-old boy who convinces his reclusive mother to take in a drifter over Labor Day weekend.  It’s later revealed that the man is an escaped convict and the three spend a weekend together that will “shape them for the rest of their lives.”  Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin star as the two leads, and Reitman felt so strongly about his cast that he pushed the production schedule back a year until both Winslet and Brolin were free.

Reitman wrote the screenplay himself and is directing Labor Day as his follow-up to last year’s Young Adult.  As a big fan of Reitman’s past work (Thank You For Smoking, Juno, Up in the Air), I’m eager to see him tackle this weighty dramatic material. Clark Gregg and James Van Der Beek also star in the film.  Hit the jump to read the full press release, which includes the updated synopsis.
