The Weinstein Company has released the poster for Killing Them Softly.  While the teaser poster was memorable, this one is a misfire.  I can see what they were going for with the big font (is that Helvetica?  Help me graphic designers!) to give it a retro-feel, but it just comes off as lazy (Russ Fischer of /Film points out that it looks really similar to the game Cards Against Humanity).  Also, this film has a great cast, and while Brad Pitt is the A-lister, that doesn’t mean everyone else’s name should get stuffed down at the bottom in tiny-type.

Hit the jump to check out the poster.  The film also stars Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, Scoot McNairy, and Ben MendelsohnKilling Them Softly opens October 19th.

First Trailer for Andrew Dominik’s KILLING THEM SOFTLY Starring Brad Pitt

The first trailer for Killing Them Softly has been released.  Directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James), the film stars Brad Pitt as a mob enforcer hired to restore order following the robbery of a mob-protected card game.  We knew going in that Dominik was unlikely to make a straightforward crime pic, and this trailer promises something special.  There’s some great humor, strange characters, and a wonderful backing track provided by the one and only Johnny Cash.  We even get a shade of those political undertones that were singled out when the film premiered to a wildly positive response at the Cannes Film Festival.  As a big fan of Jesse James this one was already high on my list of anticipated films, but seeing Pitt, Richard JenkinsRay Liotta and co. in action I can already tell it’s gonna be an excruciating next few months waiting for this to hit theaters.

TOP 5: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, JACK REACHER, Most Anticipated July to September Movies, SAVAGES, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

As much as I enjoy film, my first entertainment love will always be music. As such, this weekend finds me in Chicago in anticipation of what could be my final Warped Tour appearance. That’s right, I’m a 26 year-old man (I use the term “man” lightly, of course) who still finds immense joy in the pop-punk genre. Nevertheless, it’s becoming harder and harder for my oldness to blend in with a predominantly sub-18 crowd without looking like a total creep and, therefore, today may very well be my last Warped experience. On the bright side, I still have XBox Live to remind me that I’ve never completely grown up.

Maturity issues aside, on tap in this week’s version of the Top 5 is a slew of interviews for The Amazing Spider-Man, the first trailer and new images for Tom Cruise‘s Jack Reacher, our most anticipated movies from July to September, Savages interviews with Oliver Stone, Blake Lively, etc., and more The Dark Knight Rises coverage than most humans are capable of comprehending. Links and brief recaps for each reside after the break.

We’re halfway into summer 2012 and, with the exception of The Avengers, it’s been a bit of a disappointing blur.  The third-quarter of 2012 is now upon us and we hope that the second half of the summer season will turn around (possibly with the help of a caped crusader) and then lead us into a fall packed with the smaller dramas that signal the beginning of the awards race.

There’s a lot to look forward to in the next three months, so hit the jump for lists of our most-anticipated films from July to September.

New images have been released for the action flick Dredd and Andrew Dominik‘s crime drama Killing Them Softly.  For those unfamiliar with the films, Dredd is an attempt to faithfully adapt the 2000AD comics character Judge Dredd, and stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey.  As for Killing Them Softly, the movie stars Brad Pitt as a mob enforcer who’s tasked with investigating the robbery of a high-stakes card game.  The film also stars stars James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta, Ben Mendelsohn, Scoot McNairy, Bella Heathcote, and Sam Shepard.

A new clip from director Andrew Dominik’s (The Assassination of Jesse James) crime drama Killing Them Softly has been released.  The film stars Brad Pitt as a mob enforcer who’s tasked with investigating the robbery of a high-stakes poker game.  The pic premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this week to a widlly enthusiastic response, and apparently Dominik has crafted the crime drama as a not-so-subtle critique of capitalism.  We got a look at the excellent minimalist teaser poster a few days ago, and this clip features a funny scene between Pitt’s character and Richard Jenkins in which the title of the film becomes crystal clear.  If you missed the Ray Liotta-enhanced first clip from the film, click here.

Earlier today we got our first look at director Paul Thomas Anderson’s highly anticipated new film The Master.  The Weinstein Company showed off the first footage from the drama at the Cannes Film Festival today, where they’re also set to debut another incredibly promising property that’s set for release later this year: Killing Them Softly.  The film marks director Andrew Dominik’s follow up to his phenomenal 2007 film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and stars Brad Pitt as a mob enforcer who’s tasked with investigating the robbery of a high-stakes poker game.

The first clip for Killing Them Softly debuted earlier this month, but a stylish new teaser poster has just gone online.  It’s minimalist yet enticing, and I love the juxtaposition of the American flag with the pistol aimed right at the onlooker’s face.  Hit the jump to check the poster out in all its glory.  Killing Them Softly hits theaters on September 21st.

The first clip from Andrew Dominik‘s Killing Them Softly has gone online.  The film (formerly titled Cogan’s Trade) stars Brad Pitt as a mob enforcer who’s tasked with investigating the robbery of a high-stakes poker game.  The terrific cast also includes Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins, Richard Jenkins, Ben Mendelsohn, Scoot McNairy, Bella Heathcote, and Sam Shepard.  The clip shows Shepard’s character roughing up Liotta, and it gives an indication of the tone Dominik’s trying to strike.  There’s some clever camerawork culminating in a bit of dark comedy, and I’m curious to see if the rest of the film has the same attitude.

Hit the jump to check out the clip, and click here to check out some images from the movie.  Killing Them Softly will premiere at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, and hit theaters stateside on September 21st.
