You know a movie is getting close to opening when the studio releases an app.  Welcome to Warner Bros.’ “Hobbit Movies,” the official app for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, starting with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.  The program is chock full of behind-the-scenes media, story information, a ton of character images and production stills and even the famous map of Middle Earth.  We’ve wrangled up an image gallery, which features a lot of great looks at the dwarves in the party and the first look at Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies) as the Elvish king, Thranduil (and Legolas’ father).  Hit the jump to check out the images and to find out where you can download the app.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Benedict Cumberbatch, Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving and Andy Serkis, opens December 14th.

We’re only a few short months away from the release of what is now the first in a trilogy adaptation of The Hobbit, and a few images from Peter Jackson’s film have surfaced by way of a calendar tie-in for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.  The front cover features Martin Freeman’s Bilbo flanked by a few of his dwarven companions and Ian McKellan as our old friend Gandalf.  The inside of the calendar, however, includes some more close-up images of the film’s characters, including Hugo Weaving’s Elrond, Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel, and Orlando Bloom as Legolas, as well as our first look at Sylvester McCoy as Radagast the Brown.  Some of the backgrounds are a bit cheesy, and I would have enjoyed a more old-fashioned look to the pictures inside the calendar, but I guess the kids enjoy flashier versions of the Middle Earth heroes.

High Frame Rate Version of THE HOBBIT to See Limited Release, May Not Appear in All Major Cities

When director Peter Jackson touted the high frame rate of 48 frames per second for his upcoming fantasy epic, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, we were understandably excited.  However, the reality of the technology had the unexpected consequence of looking too real, as if one were standing on set watching a movie being filmed.  While Warner Bros. still believes that 48fps is the way of cinematic future, they’re being careful with their first major release by limiting the sites that will screen The Hobbit at the higher frame rate.  There is talk of expanding the release of future installments in 48fps dependent on audience reaction.  Hit the jump for more.

A new trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has gone online.  As it’s only subtly different from the one that was previously released, folks are referring to this one as The Hobbit 1.1.  Regardless, I’ll take any new footage of Martin Freeman and Ian McKellan I can get at this point.

The film also stars Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, and Stephen FryThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012.  Hit the jump to check out the new trailer.

Comic-con may be the first place that a lot of us will get to see Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit in motion before we get closer to its December 14th release, but for now we’ll have to settle for this new image of Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and Gandalf (Ian McKellen) on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.  The magazine’s annual Comic-Con issue also features interviews from Jackson and the actors.  The story of The Hobbit, which will be split into two parts (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and December 13, 2013′s The Hobbit: There and Back Again) tells the story of a younger Bilbo Baggins, before the adventures of his nephew Frodo (Elijah Wood) in The Lord of the Rings. New Trailer and Poster for THE GOOD DOCTOR Starring Orlando Bloom

by     Posted 1 year, 337 days ago

the good doctor orlando bloom

Orlando Bloom is a charming guy, but I’ve always believed his on-screen persona suffered because his talent is always chasing his unbelievable beauty.  The Good Doctor may have found a way around that problem.  First, director Lance Daly gave him a flat haircut, downgrading his looks from A to A-.  Second, the lead character, “an ambitious but anxious young doctor, eager to impress his superiors and colleagues,” is reserved and buttoned down.  So any perceived woodenness may well be in service of the performance.  The Good Doctor spent the last few months touring the festival circuit, receiving mostly good reviews and positive notices for Bloom’s performance.  A new trailer paints a vivid picture of the thriller, including some heavy lifting on Bloom’s part once “things take a dark turn as his enthusiasm begins to become an obsession.”  If Bloom pulls that off, I’m eager to check it out.

Riley Keough, Rob Morrow, Taraji P. Henson, and Michael Peña also star.  The Good Doctor opens on August 31.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

Orlando Bloom and Djimon Hounsou to Star in Crime Thriller ZULU

Orlando Bloom and Djimon Hounsou are set to lead Jerome Salle‘s crime thriller Zulu.  Not to be confused with the 1964 Michael Caine movie of the same name, Zulu is based on the novel by Caryl Férey and centers on two Cape Town cops (Bloom, Hounsou) who are called in to investigate the murder of Sprikboks’ rugby team player’s 18-year-old daughter.  While I haven’t seen Salle’s previous films (The Tourist was based on his movie Anthony Zimmer, but he can’t be blamed for that), I like the pairing of Bloom and Hounsou, and this sounds like it could be a good set-up for a nice little thriller.  Screen Daily reports that filming will take place in July.

Hounsou was previously set to play the Angel of Death in the adaptation of Paradise Lost, but Legendary Pictures decided to scrap the picture due to budget concerns, and I assume that’s what made the actor available for Zulu.  Bloom recently signed on to re-team with Kirsten Dunst in the drama Cities, and he’ll be seen at the end of the year reprising his role as Legolas in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Finally, the first trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been released. Peter Jackson returns to direct the adventure of young Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) who sets out on an adventure with a company of dwarves. This trailer really is like a warm embrace from an old friend. While most trailers this far out from release show very little in the way of footage, Jackson shows off a great deal. Freeman looks excellent as Bilbo, the dwarves are fantastic (they sing!), and the tag brought a big smile to my face. While a year is a very long time to wait, this snippet is a swell look into the wonder to come.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, and Stephen FryThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 14, 2012.

Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst Join Clive Owen and Anil Kapoor in CITIES

by     Posted 2 years, 170 days ago

orlando-bloom-kirsten-dunst

Last time Kirsten Dunst and Orlando Bloom got together, it was for 2005′s disastrous Elizabethtown, whose greatest legacy is inspiring the mostly pejorative term “Manic Pixie Dream Girl.”  That failure should be attributed to Cameron Crowe being excessively Cameron Crowe-y, though, rather than the Dunst/Bloom team.  So when, Dunst and Bloom reunite in Cities, the form a solid cast with fellow stars Clive Owen and Anil Kapoor (Slumdog Millionaire).  The script from writer/director Roger Donaldson (The Bank Job) follows three international stories, interwoven by the financial ties between strangers. In New York, a hedge fund manager (Owen) chases money and power.  In London, a young couple is trying to buy their first home.  In Mumbai, a cop fights against corruption between property speculators and his shady colleague (Kapoor).  Dunst is part of the New York storyline; Bloom’s role is not specified, but I am guessing the Englishman is half of the London couple.

I’m writing to you this week in full “World Series Mode.” While there are plenty of things going on around the Midwest this time of year (homemade haunted houses are always a welcomed annual treat), a majority of my focus is on trying to will my beloved Cardinals to Fall Classic glory. Combine that with the fact that Batman: Arkham City is consistently calling my name and it’s a wonder that I’m even writing this right now. Hold on, what’s that, Arkham City? Okay, okay…I’ll be there in a second…

…In this week’s installment, you’ll find talk of Transformers 4 and Transformers 5 shooting back-to-back with Jason Statham potentially starring, a six-minute prologue for The Dark Knight Rises being attached to Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol‘s IMAX release, interviews with director Paul W.S. SYMPATHY FOR DELICIOUS Blu-ray Review

The long-in-development directorial debut of Mark “the Fourth Avenger” Ruffalo, Sympathy For Delicious tells the story of a gifted DJ who’s fallen on hard times in the wake of an accident that’s left him confined to a wheelchair. Living out of his car, relying on the charity of a do-gooding priest (Ruffalo), things are pretty bleak for Delicious D (that’s his name!) until he finds that he has the power to heal the sick with a laying on of hands—a power that  cannot be applied to his own devastating malady. Further embittered by this cruel twist of fate, D nonetheless offers his healing hands to the downtrodden masses of the streets, but it isn’t long before an opportunistic indie rock band offers him a second shot at stardom if he’ll exploit his gift on-stage for a lucrative music/evangelism fest called Healapalooza. But does his salvation lie in the soulless glow of the limelight or back in the squalor of skid row?

Writer-star Christopher Thornton gets points for a divertingly quirky set-up and for treading into some intriguing conceptual territory. Unfortunately, we’ll have to dock more than a few for the flick’s overriding incoherence and the insurmountable fact that, in the end, Delicious D just ain’t all that sympathetic. Orlando Bloom Talks THE THREE MUSKETEERS and Playing Legolas Again in THE HOBBIT

With director Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers opening October 21, Summit Entertainment held a big press junket in London and I got the chance to head across the pond to interview the cast.  Based on Alexandre Dumas’ classic story, The Three Musketeers stars Logan Lerman, Luke Evans, Ray Stevenson, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz, Matthew Macfayden and Mads Mikkelsen.  In the reboot, “the hot-headed young D’Artagnan (Lerman) joins forces with three rogue Musketeers (MacFadyen, Evans and Stevenson). They must stop the evil Richlieu (Waltz) and face off with Buckingham (Bloom) and the treacherous Milady (Jovovich).”  And unlike many films that have been post converted for a 3D release, the Musketeers was shot in 3D and it looks great.  For more on the film, here’s eight clips.

During my wide ranging interview with Bloom, he talked about getting involved in Musketeers and what it was like to play a villain, the amazing real world locations, 3D, the last video game he’s played, karaoke and you can see him try and flip the interview around on me.  In addition, Bloom talked about what it’s like to play Legolas again in Peter Jackson’s upcoming Hobbit movies (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again) and when he’ll be filming.  Hit the jump to watch.

Orlando Bloom Talks THE HOBBIT, Filming in 3D with the RED Epic, and Almost Tells Us About His New Costume

Orlando-Bloom-Three-Musketeers-interview-hobbit-slice

At this weekend’s London junket for Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers, I was able to speak with Orlando Bloom about playing the Duke of Buckingham.  While I’ll be posting the full interview next week, since I got an update on The Hobbit I figured you’d like to hear his comments immediately.  As most of you know, Peter Jackson is currently directing the two prequels to the Lord of the Rings in New Zealand. Part one is titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and it’ll be released on December 14, 2012.  Part two is titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again and it will hit theaters on December 13, 2013.  Both films are set sixty years before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and tell the story of a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) who joins up with a band of dwarfs to retrieve a great treasure from the lair of a powerful dragon.

While we already knew Bloom would be reprising his role as Legolas in The Hobbit, no one was sure how big of a part he’ll play in one or both of the films.  But according to Bloom, he’s already done some filming and will be “on and off all next year.” With that kind of schedule, his appearance is clearly more than just a cameo.  Hit the jump for more.
