Sony Pictures Classics has released the first trailer for Woody Allen‘s new film Blue Jasmine.  The pic stars Cate Blanchett as a New York City housewife who travels to San Francisco to be with her sister (Sally Hawkins) after losing all of her money when her husband (Alec Baldwin) turns out to be a white collar criminal.  Jasmine looks to take on a considerably darker tone that Allen’s recent output, but there’s still plenty of humor sprinkled throughout – particularly pertaining to Blanchett’s socialite clashing with her sister’s blue collar friends (played by the likes of Andrew Dice Clay and Bobby Cannavale).  Blanchett looks to be giving an incredibly strong lead performance supported by an unsurprisingly talented ensemble, and I’m definitely enthused by the prospect of Allen once again tackling a character who is in the midst of an emotional crisis.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Louis C.K., Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Stuhlbarg.  Blue Jasmine opens in limited release on July 26th.

Three new images have been released from Woody Allen‘s upcoming film, Blue Jasmine.  The romantic comedy is described as “the story of the final stages of an acute crisis and a life of a fashionable New York housewife.”  Details on the plot remain scarce, but Allen, as always, has amassed an incredible cast.  For Blue Jasmine, he’s got Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Alec Baldwin, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Peter Sarsgaard, and Michael Stuhlbarg.  Wow.  Clay really sticks out like a sore, misogynistic thumb in that line-up.

Hit the jump to check out the images.  Blue Jasmine is due out July 26th.

Today, we’ve learned that Woody Allen‘s upcoming film will be entitled Blue Jasmine.  As we previously reported, the romantic comedy apparently centers on a woman whose “posh New York City lifestyle” comes crashing down so she makes a move to San Francisco.  The press release adds, “It is the story of the final stages of an acute crisis and a life of a fashionable New York housewife.”  As per usual, Allen has lined up a superb cast for his latest feature, which includes Alec Baldwin, Cate Blanchett, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Hit the jump for the press release.  Sony Pictures Classics will distribute Blue Jasmine, which is the sixth Allen picture for the studio.  No word yet on the release date, but I’m willing to bet we’ll see it later this year since Allen manages to get out one new movie per year.

A new U.K. trailer for director Mike Newell’s (Four Weddings and a Funeral) adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations has landed online.  The film stars Jeremy Irvine as Pip, a young man who comes into a fortune, but whose heart is continually broken by Estella (Holliday Grainger), who was taught to do so by her pathetic mother Miss Haversham (Helena Bonham Carter).  Though Dickens’ story has been retold countless times, Newell has assembled a fine cast for this latest iteration that includes Ralph Fiennes, Robbie Coltrane, Jason Flemyng, and Sally Hawkins.

Production is currently underway on Woody Allen’s still untitled next film, and as per the norm plot details have been scarce.  We do know that the cast includes Cate Blanchett, Sally Hawkins, Louis C.K., Alec Baldwin, Peter Sarsgaard, Andrew Dice Clay, Michael Emerson and Bobby Cannavale,  and that the story takes place in San Francisco and New York City.  Now a few more plot details have surfaced, as the romantic comedy apparently centers on a woman whose “posh New York City lifestyle” comes crashing down so she makes a move to San Francisco.  Hit the jump for more.

Louis C.K., Peter Sarsgaard and Andrew Dice Clay Join Woody Allen’s New Film

Woody Allen looks to have finalized the cast for his next film, and a few exciting additions have been announced.  We already knew that Sally Hawkins and Cate Blanchett would be leading a cast that also includes Alec Baldwin, Michael Emerson and Bobby Cannavale, and now Variety reports that Louis C.K., Peter Sarsgaard and Andrew Dice Clay will round out the cast.  Bradley Cooper was mentioned as a possible addition at one point, but he may have run into some scheduling issues.  Max Casella and Alden Ehrenreich are also listed in the announced cast.

Though story details are under wraps, Louis C.K.’s casting is interesting for a number of reasons.  First off, C.K. has great comedic timing as well as dramatic talent so he’s a welcomed addition, but he’s also been hailed as a bit of a successor to Allen with his New York-centric, critically hailed series Louie.  I’m beyond eager to see how he fits into Allen’s next film, and the writer-director has assembled an unsurprisingly impressive ensemble for his next effort.  The untitled film will shoot this summer in San Francisco and New York City.

Sally Hawkins to Star in Woody Allen’s Next Film; Production Starts This Summer in New York and San Francisco

Writer/director Woody Allen’s follow-up to last year’s Midnight in Paris, the Italy-centered To Rome With Love, is due out in theaters this summer, but as he’s wont to do, Allen is already gearing up to start production on his next project.  Last month we learned that Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett were being eyed to star in the currently untitled film, but now some solidified casting has been announced.  Variety reports that Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky) is in talks to play one of two female leads in the dramedy, a “neurotic who’s fun and rough around the edges.”

Hawkins, who was most recently seen in last year’s Jane Eyre and Submarine, has worked with Allen before on 2007’s Cassandra’s Dream.  Though Copenhagen was previously rumored as Allen’s next location, Variety confirms that he’ll return stateside for this effort and shoot in New York and San Francisco this summer.  Blanchett is still eying the other female lead, a sophisticated woman who has her life together, while Cooper is circling a role in the ensemble.

Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd, and Sally Hawkins to Star in Comedy LUCKY DOG

Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd, and Sally Hawkins are set to lead Phil Morrison‘s comedy Lucky Dog.  Per Deadline, “the story centers on a pair of French-Canadian conmen pals who, despite being on the outs with each other, hatch a get-rich-quick scheme to sell Christmas trees in NY.”  I’m not sure what’s quick about selling Christmas trees, but I’ll go along with it even though I thought Morrison’s previous film, Junebug, was an absolute chore with the exception of Amy Adams‘ performance.  Filming on Lucky Dog begins next month in New York City.

As we reported last month, Giamatti is set to play Friar Lawrence (the guy who cooks up the idiotic fake-death potion) in the period adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.  Rudd is leading Errol Morris‘ non-documentary feature Freezing People Is Easy, and he’ll be seen later this year in the comedies Wanderlust and the Knocked Up spinoff, This Is Forty.  As for Hawkins, she’s co-starring in Mike Newell‘s adaptation of Great Expectations.

SUBMARINE Blu-ray Review

For his directorial debut, Richard Ayoade chose to adapt the coming-of-age novel, Submarine by Joe Dunthorne. With his deft application of French New Wave techniques, a spot-on performance by Craig Roberts and original music by Alex Turner, the front man for “The Arctic Monkeys,” Ayoade has given us an endearingly quirky film. Submarine follows 15-year-old Oliver Tate (Roberts) as he makes plans to lose his virginity to his new girlfriend while helping his parents rekindle their romance and attempting not to be dragged underwater by the overwhelming realities of growing up. You can read Matt Goldberg’s review here and see all our previous coverage here. Hit the jump for my review of the Submarine Blu-ray.

U.S. Trailer for SUBMARINE

The domestic trailer for Richard Ayoade’s Submarine has gone online.  It’s not a bad trailer, but it could do a better job of playing up the film’s humor and warmth.  But instead of conveying the movie’s charm, the trailer makes us patiently await the criticism from advocacy groups deriding the use of a character saying that another character looks “mentally retarded”.  The faults of this latest trailer aside, I enjoyed the film when I saw it at Sundance and I strongly encourage you to check it out.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Submarine stars Craig Roberts, Paddy Considine, Noah Taylor, Sally Hawkins, and Yasmin Paige.  The film opens June 3rd.
