15 Things to Know from Our GANGSTER SQUAD Set Visit

by     Posted 1 year, 123 days ago

For the set visit to Gangster Squad, we were driven from Hollywood to the middle of Bellflower, California, which had been dressed to look like 1940’s Hollywood. It was a cold night, but before we can get to set, we were hustled around the hundreds of onlookers near the edges of the shoot. Ryan Gosling was shooting that day, and that meant many of the people from the neighborhood wanted to have a look, and were trying to take picture or film him with their phones. It was impressive to that many people at considering that it was already ten at night and the weather was already cold.

We were on set October 20, 2011, and at the time we had no idea that Gangster Squad would ever become controversial. But how could we know that a shooting in the summer of 2012 would change and delay the film?  Such will explain why they talk about shooting a shooting in Grauman’s Chinese Theater, and why these interviews didn’t run months ago. At the time, spirits were high as they were halfway through the shooting process and Sean Penn has just started filming, though he wasn’t on set that night. To find out more about the things we learned on the set of Gangster Squad, read on after the jump.

If you’re still hungry for more footage from Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and can’t wait until it opens this Friday, then you’ll enjoy this new clip featuring the company of Dwarves singing a melancholy tune. It’s lovely out of context, but becomes much more powerful once you’re in the thick of it and have seen the Dwarves’ backstory.

We’re exactly one month away from the debut of Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad and a new TV spot has been released to remind you of that fact. This piece shows off more footage from the crime drama that sets the villainous gangster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) against the combined handsomeness of Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling. Sean Penn May Star in PRONE GUNMAN to Kick Off Potential Action Franchise

Oscar-winner Sean Penn has played many roles: a gay rights activist in Milk, a no-nonsense crime boss in the upcoming Gangster Squad and even a glam rocker-turned-Nazi hunter in This Must Be the Place. But action star? It looks like that may be the next challenge for Penn to tackle as he’s negotiating to star in Prone Gunman, an action-thriller adaptation of Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel. The French crime story centers on Martin Terrier, an international operative who is betrayed by his organization and is led on a cat-and-mouse chase across Europe. If Penn takes the job, a potential action franchise might also be in the works. Hit the jump for more.

THE GAME and QUADROPHENIA Criterion Blu-ray Reviews

Criterion always delights, and recently they’ve put out two cult classics: David Fincher’s The Game, and Franc Roddam’s Quadrophenia. The former stars Michael Douglas and Sean Penn and came between Se7en and Fight Club in Fincher’s career, and as he made it for a studio (Gramercy) that wasn’t long for distribution it led to it having a tortured home video history – hence it’s cult status. The latter features a soundtrack by The Who, but didn’t star them, so it’s known mostly by fans of the band. Our reviews of both movies on Blu-ray follow after the jump.

Five new character posters for director Ruben Fleischer’s (Zombieland) period crime drama Gangster Squad have landed online.  The movie is set in 1940s Los Angeles and stars Sean Penn as real-life gangster Mickey Cohen, who became the target of special task force known as the “Gangster Squad”.  The pic is undergoing a bit of a marketing reboot after being pushed from its fall release date to January in the wake of the tragic theater shootings this summer.  We saw a new trailer yesterday, and these new posters do a fine job of highlighting Fleischer’s stylish take on the period setting (reminiscent of this previously released banner).  The only issue is that they still carry the old September release date.

New Trailer for GANGSTER SQUAD Starring Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone

A new trailer for director Ruben Fleischer’s crime drama Gangster Squad has been released.  I was interested in checking out Gangster Squad before the reshoots forced the release date to be pushed back and this trailer hasn’t swayed me one way or the other.  Sean Penn looks positively fierce as gangster Mickey Cohen, but Josh Brolin appears hard-boiled enough to take him on.  Ryan Gosling plays it almost too cool for school, bordering on emotionless, and leading lady Emma Stone is just too innocent to make convincing arm candy for a gangster (I’m talking Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface type of girl here).  Penn will dominate his scenes, but I’m interested to see what dramatic turns Gosling and Stone have in store for us.

Sean Penn Goes Full-Emo in First U.S. Trailer for THIS MUST BE THE PLACE

The first U.S. trailer for the emo Nazi-hunter movie This Must Be the Place has been released.  The film stars Sean Penn as an aging-rocker who becomes obsessed with pursuing the Nazi criminal who tormented his father in a concentration camp.  The French trailer for the film showcased Penn’s strange performance, but this new trailer is just straight up bizarre.  I’m not really sure what Penn’s going for, but he’s created one hell of an offbeat character.  There are a couple laughs in the clip, but I honestly don’t know if this movie’s supposed to be a drama or a comedy.  Then there’s that random Talking Heads cameo.

Josh Brolin in Talks to Star in CRAZY FOR THE STORM, Directed by Sean Penn

Earlier this month, we reported that Sean Penn would be directing Crazy for the Storm, an adaptation of the Norman Ollestad memoir scripted by Will Fetters (The Lucky One).  Now, reports have Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) in talks to star.  Ollestad, at age 11, was the only survivor of a plane crash that killed his father, who would be played by Brolin.  His memoir centers on the skills his father taught him, skills that enabled him to survive the crash.  Fetters’ script made the 2011 Black List and its easy to see what makes this story a compelling one.  Hit the jump for more on Crazy for the Storm.

John Goodman to Play a Baddie in THE HANGOVER PART III; Todd Phillips Might Be Eyeing Robert Downey Jr. and Sean Penn for a Role

The Hangover Part III has been filling out its cast for the third installment with Heather Graham, Sasha Barrese, Mike Epps, and Ken Jeong all set to return alongside stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis.  Today, Variety reports that an actor who wasn’t in the first movie will be joining the cast.  John Goodman is in talks to play a bit part as a bad guy in the upcoming sequel.  Variety says the role is “an antagonist in the vein of the character Paul Giamatti played in Hangover II.”  Variety’s article is also a bit confusing when it comes to mentioning big name actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Sean Penn.  The article could be read as those actors being on the wish list for Goodman’s role, or that they’re on director Todd Phillips‘ wish list for a role that hasn’t been revealed.

Filming on the sequel is due to begin in September.  The Hangover Part III is due out May 24, 2013.

Sean Penn to Direct Survival Drama CRAZY FOR THE STORM

by     Posted 1 year, 249 days ago

Sean Penn is adding another directorial project to his docket.  Variety reports that Penn has now entered talks to direct Crazy for the Storm, an adaptation of Norman Ollestad’s memoir.  At only 11 years old, Ollestad was the only survivor of a plane crash that killed his father.  The script by Will Fetters (The Lucky One) landed on the 2011 Black List and revolves around Ollestad’s relationship with his father and how the skills instilled in him by his father helped him survive the crash.

It sounds like a fairly intense story, and the Warner Bros. film will likely necessitate strong performances from the actors playing the young boy and his father.  Penn is not expected to take a role in the film, as he’ll only be handling directing duties.  Hit the jump for more, including a synopsis of the book.
