While The Evil Dead remake recently lost its star as Lily Collins was forced to drop out due to scheduling issues, director Fede Alvarez has settled on his male lead. Variety reports that Shiloh Fernandez (Red Riding Hood) is set to star in the pic, which is an update of the 1981 horror film which centered on a group of teens holed up in a remote cabin who discover the Book of the Dead. The remake will maintain the same central plot device of the original, but Bruce Campbell’s character of Ash will not appear. The project is in good hands, as Campbell, Sam Raimi, and Rob Tapert are all onboard as producers. Now Alvarez and Co. will move on to casting the female lead of the project.

In addition to The Evil Dead, Variety also reports that Fernandez has landed the starring role in Deep Powder. Mo Ogrodnik (Uptown Girls) is set to direct, but plot details are being kept firmly under wraps (though I’m assuming it’s not the long-awaited sequel to 1995′s Powder). He’s set to shoot Deep Powder later this month before moving on to The Evil Dead later this year. The Evil Dead opens April 12th, 2013.

Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge) is directing the pic from a script by Craig Rosenberg (The Uninvited). Yesterday we brought you some first synopses from a number of films being sold at AFM this week, and 7500 was among them. The pic tells the story of a group of passengers who begin to experience frightening supernatural phenomena after a passenger mysteriously dies in flight. Those remaining are left to wonder if they’re next. Variety reports that Kwanten and Smart will play a married couple who board the flight with two of their longtime friends for a trip to Japan, while Bibb will play “a stewardess involved in a complicated and secret relationship.”

SKATELAND Blu-ray Review

skateland-slice

Many films embrace nostalgia, but few are swallowed whole by it the way Skateland is. It bends itself towards evoking the late 70s/early 80s in painstaking detail and then – having achieved the illusion – doesn’t have the first idea what to do with it. It mistakes pointless meandering for slow meditation, spinning a single dramatic event into an endless stumble through parties, parking lots and rehashed American Graffiti tropes in a vain effort to evoke a specific mood. We have a couple of casting stories to send your way tonight. First up, Charlie Hunnam (FX’s Sons of Anarchy) has landed the starring role in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Heat Vision reports that details regarding Hunnam’s role are under wraps but speculates that the turn may be as a pilot of a mecha (from the Japanese genre which involves humans manning “robotic constructs”) that “needs to climb back into the driver’s chair.” You may remember that the director decided to pursue Pacific Rim as his next project shortly after Universal failed to greenlight his R-rated take on At the Mountains of Madness. Back in March, we filled you in on some of the film’s potential plot elements and described the project as a monster-pic that takes place in “two worlds.” Hunnam’s casting reiterates that synopsis and describes Pacific Rim as “monster movie that sees powerful extraterrestrial aliens threaten the Earth’s existence, attacking cities and nations neighboring the Pacific Ocean.”

A couple of new posters have been released today. First up, the international poster for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has hit the web. It’s pretty much a combination of all the separate character posters that have been released so far, as it puts all the four main characters together on the same poster. The film hits theaters in 3D on May 20th.

Secondly, a new poster for Skateland has been released. The film, starring Ashley Greene, is set in the 80’s and centers on high schoolers and their local roller skating rink. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festvial. Directed by Anthony Burns, Skateland stars Greene, Shiloh Fernandez, Heath Freeman, Brett Cullen, and Taylor Handley. RED RIDING HOOD Review

There’s a strangeness that creeps along the edges of Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood.  It’s a PG-13 teen soap opera that wants to sneak in some surprisingly R-rated content like cannibalism and torturing the mentally handicapped.  But what’s surprising and creative in the film is always smothered beneath convention, simplistic design, and insulting themes.  There are directors who could blend a classic fairy tale with a teen drama and a modern attitude, but Hardwicke is not one those directors.  Red Riding Hood feels unbalanced and its stranger elements never feel organically blended into the larger narrative.  The result is an off-putting affair that owes more to Twilight than it does to the Brothers Grimm.

Shiloh Fernandez Exclusive Interview RED RIDING HOOD

In the mystery thriller Red Riding Hood, actor Shiloh Fernandez plays Peter, a poor woodcutter in the village of Daggerhorn, who is in love with the beautiful Valerie (Amanda Seyfried). However, Valerie’s parents (Billy Burke and Virginia Madsen) have arranged for her to marry Henry (Max Irons), the blacksmith son of the town’s wealthiest family. In love with him since she was very young, Valerie is not willing to be forcibly separated from Peter, and the two plan to run away together, until the village’s feared beast – the werewolf – takes the life of Valerie’s sister, changing their lives forever.

During the press day for the film, Shiloh Fernandez did this exclusive interview with Collider and talked about how he had wanted to work with Catherine Hardwicke since auditioning for Twilight and Hamlet, what it was like to work with Amanda Seyfried, and why he thinks fairy tales endure for generations. He also talked about working with Ashley Greene on Skateland (which opens in theaters in May), how he’d like to branch out and do a comedy like 21 Jump Street, for which he recently read the script, admitted that he would like to do a musical, and said he hopes to do a film that his friend, actor Thomas Dekker, will be directing. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

7 Clips from Catherine Hardwicke’s RED RIDING HOOD

by     Posted: March 4th, 2011 at 10:41 am

Warner Bros. has sent over seven clips from director Catherine Hardwicke’s (Twilight, Thirteen) thriller Red Riding Hood. Amanda Seyfried (Letters to Juliet) stars as Valerie, a beautiful young woman torn between a brooding outsider (Shiloh Fernandez) and the wealthy man of her parents’ dreams (Max Irons).  Unfortunately, one of them may be the wolf that terrorizes her village.  (Such virility is a turn-on, but werewolves are notorious commitment-phobes.)  Gary Oldman, Billy Burke, Virginia Madsen, and Julie Christie also star.  Hit the jump for the full synopsis and clips:

43 Images from RED RIDING HOOD Starring Amanda Seyfried

by     Posted: March 1st, 2011 at 11:40 am

I can’t watch the trailer for Red Riding Hood without laughing.  It looks like a parody of a real movie with its overly sinister take on the Red Riding Hood fairy tale.  I know the Brothers Grimm’s original tales were dark, but you’re not going to turn “My, what big eyes you have,” into a chilling piece of horror dialogue.  While the story may turn out to be a problem, cinematographer Mandy Walker has done a solid job capturing the gothic tone that director Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) wanted to convey.

Hit the jump to check out 43 images from the movie.  Red Riding Hood stars Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Shiloh Fernandez, Billy Burke, Virginia Madsen, and Julie Christie.  It opens March 11th.

Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) directed the gothic re-imagining of the familiar tale; Red Riding Hood is due in theaters March 11.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

First Trailer and Poster for Catherine Hardwicke’s RED RIDING HOOD Starring Amanda Seyfried

by     Posted: November 16th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Today is officially “trailer day” as the recent teaser for Pixar’s Cars 2 and the trailer to Jason Statham’s actioner The Mechanic can attest. Next up is the official premier of the trailer to Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood starring the lovely Amanda Seyfried in the titular role. The trailer is actually quite impressive from a visual standpoint, very reminiscent of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, what with its creepy Hammer-esque designs, and heavily contrasted colors. It goes without saying the film boasts a decidedly Twilight-ish vibe, complete with leading man Shiloh Fernandez doing his best Robert Pattinson impersonation (he even has the hair).

Red Riding Hood also stars Gary Oldman, Lukas Haas and Virginia Madsen, and is set for release March 11, 2011. Hit the jump to see the trailer, the first poster, and the official synopsis:

First Look at Catherine Hardwicke’s RED RIDING HOOD Starring Amanda Seyfried

Classic reimaginings are a hot property these days. There are two different live-action films in pre-production covering Snow White, and another covering Cinderella, but before those steal headlines down the road there is Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood. The film is already shooting and stars Amanda Seyfried as the innocent girl just wanting to visit grandma. We reported in July about behind-the-scenes pictures showing off Seyfried, co-star Gary Oldman, and many more dressed in period attire. Now we have the first glimpse of the film in the proper context, i.e. not walking through a concrete parking lot, so hit the jump to check them out along with more updates on the film.

Max Irons, Julie Christie, and Gary Oldman Join Catherine Hardwicke’s GIRL WITH THE RED RIDING HOOD

Max Irons (son of Jeremy Irons) has joined Amanda Seyfried and Shiloh Fernandez in Catherine Hardwicke’s Girl with the Red Riding HoodHeat Vision also reports that Julie Christie and Gary Oldman are in talks to come on board the flick, which is a gothic retelling of the “Little Red Riding Hood” fairy tale.  This version is set in a medieval village that’s trying to fend off a werewolf.

Irons will play “Henri, the son of a blacksmith who, through an arrangement, is to marry Seyfried’s character.”  However, we learned earlier this week that Fernandez was cast as, “an orphaned woodcutter for whom Seyfried falls, much to the displeasure of her family.”  This likely means that Henri is a jerk and/or is going to die horribly so Seyfried and Fernandez can be together.  As for Christie, she would play Seyfried’s grandmother.  As for Oldman, he would be “Father Soloman, a man whose title is the Witchfinder General and whose job is to find and kill the werewolf.”  One of the coolest things you can put on a resume or business card is “Witchfinder General.”
