A couple of new trailers have been released for two new pay cable drama series.  Showtime has unveiled an extended look at its new series Ray Donovan, which stars Liev Schreiber as a “fixer” for the rich and famous in Los Angeles whose life is complicated when his powerful father—whom he may or may not have framed—is unexpectedly released from prison.  Despite the bland title, the show actually looks like a fairly interesting character drama with a pair of strong performances by Schreiber and Jon Voight.  The series premieres on Showtime on Sunday, June 30th.

Additionally, Starz has unveiled a new look at its period series Da Vinci’s Demons.  From executive producer David S. Goyer (Batman Begins), the show stars Tom Riley as the titular artist/inventor/swordsman/idealist living in Renaissance Florence, struggling to exist within the confines of his own reality and time as he begins to not only see the future, but invent it.  The series premieres on Starz on Friday, April 12th.  Hit the jump to watch the trailers for Ray Donovan and Da Vinci’s Demons.

The ever-busy William Monahan is looking to dip his toe into the world of television.  The Oscar-winning The Departed scribe is currently gearing up to direct his second feature film, Mojave, with Oscar Isaac and Jason Clarke in the lead roles, and now word comes that he’s poised to delve into pay-cable TV as well.  THR reports that Monahan is developing the 1960s Britain-set drama Crime for Starz.  Monahan will write the script, and the project is described as “a study of criminal enterprises and scandal across 1960s Britain.”

Crime was originally developed as a feature film from a treatment by Vanessa Sadler, but Monahan will take the reins to turn the property into a television series.  The scribe has been keeping plenty busy as of late, recently signing on to pen a remake of Park Chan-wook’s 2005 film Sympathy for Lady Vengeance as a star vehicle for Charlize Theron.  He also penned the sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and a remake of The Gambler.

Sarz has announced that its gladiatorial series Spartacus will come to its conclusion with its third season, Spartacus: War of the Damned, which will premiere on Friday, January 25th 2013 at 9pm.  Spartacus fashioned itself initially as a kind of response to HBO’s great but gone-too-soon series Rome, also piggybacking on the popularity of 300, but distinguished itself for being particularly violent, with lots of explicit sexual content.

Aside from having to establish itself among a bevy of currently running period dramas, the series faced difficulties during its first season when its star Andy Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which lead Starz to produce a prequel mini-series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.  Liam McIntyre then replaced Whitfield for the following season, Spartacus: Vengeance, and will finish out the series’ run.  Hit the jump for more on Spartacus, including a sneak peek video of War of the Damned.

Premiering on Starz in the first half of 2013 is David S. Goyer‘s Da Vinci’s Demons.   Starring Tom Riley (as Leonardo Da Vinci), Laura Haddock and Lara Pulver, the show is a “historical fantasy, following the ‘untold’ story of the world’s greatest genius during his turbulent youth in Renaissance.”

At this year’s New York Comic-Con, I was able to talk with Goyer before his panel.  During both a roundtable and exclusive interview he talked about how he got attached to the project, how Da Vinci’s Demons could never air on network TV, the exciting visuals for the show, the fact that he “shamelessly pillaged the crews of Luther, Sherlock and Game of Thrones,” getting Bear McCreary to do the score, and more.  In addition, I also asked when we might see the next trailer for Man of Steel (which he wrote), the difference between working on cable and network TV and why he became frustrated with Flash Forward, and he set the record straight regarding whether there were a lot of deleted scenes from The Dark Knight Rises.  Hit the jump for more.

On Season 2 of the Starz original series Boss, Tip “T.I.” Harris plays Trey Rogers, a former gangbanger with designs on a career in City Hall. He is the cousin that Darius (Rotimi) turns to when struggling with his love for Emma (Hannah Ware), Mayor Tom Kane’s (Kelsey Grammer) daughter, and he is the conduit between a local Alderman and the gang that is powerful enough to function as a grassroots organization in the projects.

During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, rapper T.I. talked about the opportunity to be a part of this acclaimed show, how his character will fit into the story, being able to understand who Trey Rogers is, working with Rotimi who also aspires to get into music, what it was like to do a scene with Kelsey Grammer, and how different acting has been from what he expected. He also talked about working in TV versus film, breaking the stereotypes of his rapper persona, having just done his first comedy (Identity Thief with Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman), becoming an entrepreneur, and his eighth album, Trouble Man, which he hopes to release by the end of the year. Comic-Con: SPARTACUS: WAR OF THE DAMNED Panel Recap Plus New Images from the Show

In an effort of full disclosure, I am a fan of the Spartacus series.  It’s not the blood and guts, though there’s plenty of both.  It’s not the hyper sexuality/sensuality, though that’s also available in spades.  It’s the character performances that make this series stand out for me.  I couldn’t pass up the chance to get a glimpse at what’s to come in the the final season Spartacus: War of the Damned, airing on STARZ in January 2013.  This panel really brought out the dead.  Find out what I mean after the break.

There’s been three whole seasons of swords, sandals, sex and bloodshed in the Spartacus series (remember there’s a marathon coming later this summer), each jumping around in different time periods, but now it sounds like Starz is bringing it to an end. Today to cable network announced a new season of the series called Spartacus: War of the Damned which will be the final season of the series.

In fact, the new season is already in production in New Zealand with Liam McIntyre reprising the title role and Manu Bennett (Crixus), Dustin Clare (Gannicus), Dan Feuerriegel (Agron), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Naevia) and Ellen Hollman (Saxa) all returning as well. The final chapter of the series takes place following the defeat of Roman commander Gaius Claudius Glaber. Spartacus and his men have amassed major victories against the Romans after the Battle of Vesuvius.  These victories have not only forged the legend of Spartacus, but have greatly increased the ranks of the rebellion slaves to more than 30,000. Rome is indeed beginning to tremble at the threat Spartacus now represents.  Hit the jump for more.

spartacus-all-seasons-slice

With the most recent season Spartacus all wrapped up and aired on Starz, the network has decided to have a little fun with their epic series. Starting this summer on June 8th, the cable network will air each and every episode of their series in chronological order. That doesn’t mean they will be airing in the order in which the seasons were released, but airing according to the historical timeline in which each season takes place. Therefore Gods of the Arena will kick off the event on June 8th, Blood and Sand will begin on June 22nd and Vengeance will air all over again starting July 20th. This would be a great way for anyone to catch up who doesn’t want to go renting a bunch of DVD’s from Netflix. There’s plenty of blood, sex, drama and more awaiting if you decide to partake. Check out the full press release and episode schedule after the jump.
