Preview night for Comic-Con 2012 doesn’t begin until later tonight, but our partners and Omelete have been able to snap a ton of images from the in-construction convention floor. This gives us early looks at many of the booths that will be available when the convention opens, including Marvel’s Iron Man 3 setup (which includes a great image of multiple Iron Man armors laying on the ground, looking like a bunch of dead Iron Men), The Hobbit, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, The Dark Knight Rises, and much, much more.
Hit the jump to take a look at the images, and click here to catch up on all of our Comic-Con coverage so far.

With director Len Wiseman’s Total Recall reboot less than a month away, a new clip has popped up online. Unfortunately, the clip just rehashes the same extended action sequence we’ve seen in the trailer. Colin Farrell stars as Douglas Quaid, a man who is bored with his life and seeks to have adventurous memories implanted in his brain. In the clip, we watch as Farrell’s plans go awry and he goes all Jason Bourne on a number of faceless federal police. It’s much less sexy than Farrell vs co-star Kate Beckinsale, which we saw in this earlier clip. The only thing tempting me to see the movie at this point is some Beckinsale vs Jessica Biel action. Total Recall, also starring Bill Nighy, John Cho and Bryan Cranston, debuts August 3rd. Hit the jump to watch the new(ish) clip.

With Comic-Con about to begin, many of the studios have already plastered posters over buses, walls, and inside hotel elevators to try and promote their upcoming wares. While the majority of what’s coming will be set up tomorrow, after the jump you can get a sneak peak of what’s already on display including Game of Thrones, Syfy’s Defiance, Black Dynamite, Frankenweenie, Grimm, Looper, the remake of Robocop, Total Recall, Wreck-it-Ralph, True Blood, and more.
However, while all the marketing materials are cool, my favorite image has nothing to with your favorite movie or TV show. Instead it’s a piece of street art telling us not to believe the hype. It’s very well done and definitely worth checking out.

This weekend I find myself deep in the heart of Louisville, KY for Fandomfest Louisville 2012. Part Comic-Con, part pop culture celebration, and part horror film festival, a few guests of note include Bruce Campbell, Sean Astin, Tyler Mane, and slasher icon Kane Hodder. While each of these attendees has a special place in my pop culture heart in one way or another, my mission today is to track down former WCW star Diamond Dallas Page. 10 year-old me loved nothing more than watching DDP and co. weekly on WCW Monday Nitro, and today may be the only opportunity I get to share that joy with someone who was an integral part of it.
All wrestling memories aside, awaiting you on the other side of this week’s Top 5 is a brief recap and link to our Magic Mike interviews with Channing Tatum, Steven Soderbergh and more, the new international and domestic trailers for Rian Johnson‘s Looper, Steve’s People Like Us video interviews with Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks and more, the new Total Recall trailer, and Brendan’s inaugural By the Numbers feature that spans Pixar’s entire filmography to date.

Comic-Con has released the schedule for Friday, July 13th, and it provides further proof of how the convention is moving away from movies and towards TV series. On Friday, three major TV series will be occupying Hall H: The Big Bang Theory, The Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones. However, there will still be plenty of presentations for movies including ParaNorman, Resident Evil: Retribution, Total Recall, Looper, and most exciting of all—a first look at Neill Blomkamp‘s District 9 follow-up, Elysium.
Outside of Hall H, there’s plenty of other great stuff including the panels for Community, Breaking Bad, The Legend of Korra, Firefly, and more. Hit the jump for highlights from Friday’s schedule, and click here for Thursday’s schedule. The 2012 San Diego Comic-Con runs from July 12 – 15th.

A new theatrical trailer for director Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake has been released. This trailer includes quite a few nods to the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger-fronted iteration of the story, with everyone’s favorite three-breasted woman making an appearance (kind of). There are a couple of groan worthy one-liners that are apparently a requirement for 90% of action movies, but I’m hoping Colin Farrell’s charisma will outweigh the dialogue flaws. The sci-fi world that Wiseman’s built here looks impressive, and we definitely get the sense that there are going to be a lot of action sequences to marvel at. I’m interested to see what makes Wiseman’s remake a story worth telling and not just a rehash of the original, so hopefully this Total Recall’s a fun ride.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer, and if you missed any of Steve’s set visit coverage click here. The film also stars Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, and Bryan Cranston. Total Recall opens on August 3rd.

Over the past few weeks, some really cool viral posters for director Len Wiseman’s Total Recall reboot have been popping up in bus shelters and on billboards. They’ve finally landed online in a high resolution capacity, so we can take a closer look at this fun collection. The posters act as advertisements for “Rekall” which, if you’re unfamiliar with the story, is a place in the future where people can go to have false memories implanted in their brains to give them the satisfaction of fulfilling fantasies that have actually never physically been experienced. These posters advertise the fact that you can become a soccer superstar, an astronaut, or even a smiling businessman with a cell phone at Rekall. There’s also one outlier poster that warns of potential dangers at the business, but it’s the wet blanket of the group.

Apologies for the lack of a Top 5 last weekend. I was so busy prepping to get married, and eventually getting married, that I had to cash in a “sick day” on the best weekend job a person could ask for. The good news is that I have no intention on making this a routine (either the “sick day” or the getting married) so we should be good to go on the regular Top 5 installments for the foreseeable future. The bad news is that I doubt the substantial pile of wedding cards filled with cash/gift cards will catch on as a routine either. You win some you lose some, I guess.
In this week’s return edition you can find a recap of our Total Recall set visit coverage, a new trailer for Breaking Bad Season 5 alongside a fan-made recap of Seasons 1-4, continuing coverage of Prometheus such as Blu-ray details, a sequel recap and more, the first full trailer for Resident Evil: Retribution, and our Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter set visit. Keep reading for a brief recap and link to each.

Colin Farrell is holding a futuristic black gun that fires energy rather than bullets. He’s standing behind a sliding white door inside a capsule that travels through the center of the Earth. Inside the room he’s trying to enter, armed Federal soldiers are guarding a valuable prisoner: Melina (Jessica Biel), one of the leaders of the underground resistance, and she’s trying to get rid of Vilos Cohaagen (the leader of the United Federation of Britain, who’s being played by Bryan Cranston). An assistant director calls action, the door slides open and Farrell comes barreling in, firing his weapon and killing three soldiers. After freeing Biel, Farrell explains that Cohaagen is lying and he’s not with him. As he pleads with her, it’s clear Biel is not sure what to believe, but she eventually embraces him with watery eyes. After a long kiss, they race out of the capsule and someone calls cut.
Let me back up a second.
As I type these words, it’s August 11, 2011 and I’m at the Toronto International Airport on my way back home. Yesterday, I spent all day on the Toronto set of director Len Wiseman‘s Total Recall remake. While some set visits might be a few hours, we arrived on set around 10:30am and didn’t leave until 10:30pm. It was a crazy day where we got to see tons of cool production art, interview the cast and filmmakers, and we saw huge practical sets that are going to look amazing on screen. Last summer, on the set of the Total Recall remake, I was able to participate in a group interview with Colin Farrell (Doug Quaid/Hauser) and Jessica Biel (Melina). Even though both had been filming part of an extended action sequence for a number of hours, they came in with big smiles and gave us a lot of time. During the interview they talked about filming the remake, the big action scenes, the violence and physicality of the film, if they wanted to include anything from the original, the futuristic gadgets they get to play with, and a lot more. If you had told me that the dad on Malcolm in the Middle would become one of my favorite actors, I’d never have believed you. But after years of amazing work on AMC’s brilliant drama Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston has shown that he can transform himself into any character and make it believable. It’s probably why during the last few hiatuses he’s landed small but important roles in films like Drive, John Carter, The Lincoln Lawyer, Red Tails, Larry Crowne, and this summer’s remake of Total Recall. In director Len Wiseman’s film, Cranston plays Vilos Cohaagen, who was originally played by the great Ronny Cox. And like the original, Cohaagen is a close friend and ally of Quaid/Hauser (Colin Farrell) who wants to see his friend return home.
Last summer I got to visit the set of Total Recall when the production was filming in Toronto and participated in a group interview with Cranston. He talked about why he wanted to play the role, what’s different about his version of Cohaagen, what are his characters motivations, filming the action, his process as an actor, his thoughts on the end of Breaking Bad, and a lot more. In addition, Cranston reveals that he was offered Kevin Bacon‘s role in X-Men: First Class but turned it down to be in director Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Drive. Hit the jump to either read or listen to what Cranston had to say.

One of the best things about director Paul Verhoeven‘s Total Recall is you don’t know what’s real and what’s in Douglas Quaid/Hauser’s head (Arnold Schwarzenegger). And while you can make a great case for both, there is no definite answer, and I think that’s one of the reasons the film holds up today. So last summer, on the set of the remake, I was able to participate in a group interview with director Len Wiseman and we asked him if the ending will be clear, or if it’ll be like the original. He told us:
“There’s going to be a lot of speculation. I would think — I would hope — some people are going to absolutely think one way, and because of certain details that I’m putting in there, [certain people] may think the other. It is something that I love: the continued conversation about it.”
During the rest of the interview, Wiseman and producer Toby Jaffe talked about referencing the original, lens flares, how much influence the original Philip K. Dick story had on the remake, Easter eggs from the original film, sequel possibilities, if they kept any classic one-liners, and a lot more. Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

As the production designer of I, Robot, Dark City, Independence Day and Underworld: Evolution, Patrick Tatopoulos has shown he can create interesting and unique make-believe worlds. However, in director Len Wiseman‘s remake of Total Recall, Tatopoulos has the difficult challenge of not only creating a cool futuristic setting for today’s moviegoers, he’s also going to have his work compared to William Sandell‘s production design from the original Total Recall that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. And even though it’s a difficult challenge, based on what I saw when I got to visit the set last summer, I think Tatopoulos has done a great job and moviegoers are going to be very happy.
During a group interview on the set of Total Recall, Tatopoulos told us about the differences between the remake and the original, what fictional products they created for the film, the difficulties in creating a realistic version of the future that no one has seen, how many hovercrafts they had to build for the big chase sequence, and a lot more. Hit the jump to either read or listen to the interview.

The first clip and TV spot for director Len Wiseman’s remake of Total Recall have landed online. The clip should be familiar to fans of the 1990 Total Recall starring Arnold Scharzenegger, as it features Colin Farrell’s character coming home to his “wife” played by Kate Beckinsale after some unknown assailants tried to capture him. A fight ensues and, needless to say, Beckinsale’s iteration of Lori appears to be much more lethal (and bendy) than Sharon Stone’s. We’ve also got the first TV spot for the film, which does a nice job of setting up the plot for those unfamiliar with the material. Though I’m still unsure about the pic storywise, the visuals on display in the clip and TV spot promise some intense sci-fi action as well as lens flares that would make J.J. Abrams proud.
Hit the jump to check out the clip, TV spot, and a new image. The film also stars Jessica Biel, John Cho, Bill Nighy, and Bryan Cranston. Total Recall opens on August 3rd.

The Cannes Film Festival is about to get underway, and studios are rolling out their promotional material to make sure that those attending screenings of the festival’s films don’t forget about the studio releases that are still to come later this year. Our correspondent Magdalena (who you can follow on twitter) walked around the area of the festival earlier today and snapped some photos of the posters and billboards that are on display. In addition to a really cool banner for Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, she also brought us our first look at the Tom Cruise thriller One Shot, based on the popular Jack Reacher character book series from author Lee Child. Moreover, there’s a pretty great set-up for the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy The Dictator outside one of the Carlton hotel.
