Disney has released a new TV spot and character poster for director Gore Verbinski’s upcoming iteration of The Lone Ranger.  Based on the classic TV series of the same name, the film stars Armie Hammer as the titular hero and Johnny Depp as the sidekick Tonto.  This TV spot has a very heavy focus on the pic’s train-centered action sequences, and admittedly the CG looks a bit spotty.  Verbinski delivered some swell set pieces in his Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, though, so hopefully we’ll see the same quality on display in The Lone Ranger.  Additionally, on the heels of a couple of character posters for Hammer and Depp, Disney has released a new poster for Helena Bonham Carter’s character Red Harrington, who is described as a “dramatically coiffed, straight-talking, ivory-legged proprietor of a mobile establishment of lavish entertainments.”  I’m pretty sure that’s fancy talk for Madam.

Warner Bros. released the first TV spot for Man of Steel tonight during the college basketball championship*.  It confirms the main takeways of the trailers: director Zack Snyder makes stylish use of a couple hundred million dollars, and star Henry Cavill sure does look the part.  (Cavill, casually aflame, shirtless, is the coolest thing I’ve seen all week.)  It’s the story that will make or break the movie, but Superman comes pre-made as a compelling character, so I have high hopes for Man of Steel when it opens on June 14.

Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Ayelet Zurer, and Russell Crowe also star.  Watch the spot after the break.

The first TV spot for Todd Phillips’ The Hangover Part III is now available.  The short teaser shows glimpses of where the Wolfpack is headed for the concluding chapter in their trilogy and it ain’t all in Vegas.  Instead of a bachelor party blowout or a wedding to attend at the last second, the guys appear to start off at a funeral before participating in a prison riot, running for their lives in the desert and buying a giraffe.  Classic.

Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Ken Jeong, Justin Bartha, Heather Graham, Jeffrey Tambor and John Goodman, The Hangover Part III opens May 24th.  Hit the jump to watch the TV spot.

Warner Bros. has released the first TV spot for director Baz Luhrmann’s (Moulin Rouge) adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby.  For those unfamiliar with the source material, the story centers on a would-be writer (Tobey Maguire) chasing the American dream who moves to New York City in the spring of 1922 and encounters a mysterious millionaire named Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio).  This TV spot features quite a bit of new footage, and I’m incredibly eager to see Fitzgerald’s novel adapted for the screen by way of Luhrmann’s bombastic, colorful, and vibrant vision.

Universal has unveiled a bounty of goodies from director Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming sci-fi pic Oblivion.  The featurettes focus on Kosinski’s desire to do as many of the film’s visual effects in camera as possible, and it’s absolutely fascinating to see how he pulled off some of these tricks.  For scenes in the film’s skytower, instead of using a blue screen to fill out the sky background, Kosinski actually projected footage of the real sky (which he shot in Maui) 360 degrees around the set, so everything the audience sees in the background is practical.  The other featurette focuses on the creation of the pic’s “bubble ship,” and it’s another interesting look into Kosinski’s strong flair for design.

With the season premiere of Game of Thrones less than a week away, HBO has continued their marketing onslaught by releasing a new promo and a new featurette.  The promo once again reminds us that the dragons are going to be a big factor in the new season, and as for the featurette, I highly encourage you to watch it.  It goes into detail about creating the world of the Wildlings, and the amount of effort and detail that makes the world come alive.  You probably won’t notice these details when watching the show, but subconsciously they make the world believable.  This is the case for all of the settings on the series, but showing the technical work in creating the life beyond The Wall is a fine example of how the show’s technical departments work their magic.  The featurette also devotes time to new character Mance Rayder (played by the great Ciaran Hinds).

A couple of new TV spots have landed online for two upcoming animated films.  The new spot for Pixar’s Monsters University shows a bit of a new footage and makes excellent use of Andrew W.K.’s “Party Hard,” as we’re treated to a montage of clips from this monster-infused look at college life.  The prequel focuses on the budding friendship between Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James P. Sullivan (John Goodman).  The film opens in 3D on June 21st.

The other TV spot shines some light on Universal and Illumination Entertainment’s sequel Despicable Me 2.  We recently saw a new full-length trailer for the follow-up, but this TV spot primarily centers on an elaborate fart joke constructed by those adorable minions.  Featuring the voices of Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, and Al Pacino, the film opens in 3D on July 3rd.  Hit the jump to watch both TV spots, which debuted during the Kid’s Choice Awards.

An international TV spot for Iron Man 3 has gone online.  The spot still has the grim tone of almost everything we’ve seen so far, but it also has the same amount of action.  It also has a very cool ending, and fans of the comics will enjoy the reference even if the reference will probably be unnamed in the actual film.  That’s all I’m going to say because some might consider what happens to be a minor spoiler.

Hit the jump to check out the TV spot, but again be warned that it contains a minor spoiler.  The film stars he film stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, and Ben Kingsley.  Iron Man 3 opens in 3D on May 3rd.

Paramount has released a new TV spot for director Michael Bay’s incredibly promising black comedy Pain & Gain.  Based on a true story, the film stars Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson as two bodybuilders who get caught up in an extortion ring and kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.  The film’s first trailer is fantastic, and this TV spot does a great job of showcasing that pic’s charm and comedy.  Pain & Gain looks like it could actually be Bay’s most entertaining film yet, but I have a feeling they’re keeping some of the story’s more sordid details under wraps.  The real life ordeal is fairly horrific, though I expect Wahlberg and Johnson will bring enough levity/ridiculousness to the film to make it palatable.

The new season of Game of Thrones will soon be upon us, and HBO has seriously cranked up their marketing.  Two new TV spots have been released along with another full-length trailer.  All of the ads convey two important facts.  First, the show is as epic and sprawling as ever, and maybe it’s time to start killing off some characters just as a matter of brevity.  Second, it’s time for dragons, baby.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation wants audiences back in the fight, especially since the film was delayed for nine months.  As part of the film’s viral marketing campaign, Paramount is inviting fans to become part of the bad guys and join up with the Cobra Special Forces.  A fake ad for the fighting force has gone online, and it’s a direct parody of almost every real military recruitment ad (personally, I like the one for the Marines where the guy got a sword to fight a dragon).  But who can resist the call of duty when Keith David is providing the narration?

First TV Spot for EVIL DEAD

evil dead remake

The first TV spot for director Fede Alvarez’s horror remake Evil Dead has been released online.  There’s not much new footage to be found, as the TV spot’s focus is on audience reactions to the film’s incredibly bloody red-band trailers.  Fans of Sam Raimi’s original film are likely already sold on at least checking out the redo—Raimi and Bruce Campbell were intricately involved as producers on the film—so this TV spot seems aimed squarely at young moviegoers who have no idea who Sam Raimi is but sure do like those jump scare movies like Paranormal Activity.  The pic is set to premiere at the SXSW Film Festival this weekend, so expect to hear first reactions soon.

Notoriously tight-lipped Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner has allowed AMC to drop a few more tidbits about the upcoming sixth season of the juggernaut drama in a new on-air promo.  The spot features some of the recently released black and white images that show all of the principle cast draped in late 1960s fashion, but now made slightly 3D (ok, AMC).  It also features the tagline, “You’re invited to the affair of the year.”

Like Season Five, the upcoming season will kick off with a two-hour premiere (without a title as of yet) that will be written by Weiner and directed by executive producer Scott Hornbacher.  The show will also start an hour earlier than its regular time slot (9 p.m.) which it will return to the following week (10 p.m.) with an episode written by Jonathan Igla and Weiner, and directed by series star Jon Hamm.  For the promo spot and more, hit the jump.
