Though we still have a couple of weeks to go before the highly anticipated release of The Avengers, the film has already screened for a number of audiences.  Given the fact that Marvel has to corral a number of busy schedules for its actors to appear at the film’s premieres across the globe, they got a head start a few weeks ago with the U.S. premiere in Los Angeles.  The cast is now making its way across the globe for the films various premieres, and we’re now starting to see the first full reviews of the film (we previously brought you Twitter reactions to the U.S. premiere).

So what’s the verdict?  Well, early reaction is extremely positive.  Though we only have a handful of reviews to sift through at the moment, the top trades like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have very nice things to say about Joss Whedon’s all-star superhero movie, with many outlets calling it the best Marvel movie yet and one of the best superhero movies ever.  Hit the jump for a roundup of some quotes.

Though you may be suffering a bit from Avengers marketing fatigue (I feel your pain), I assure you this piece of material is a breath of fresh air.  Mondo, the glorious collectible boutique arm of the Alamo Drafthouse, has kicked off their series of Avengers posters with one sheets for Black Widow and Hawkeye.  The latter has a 60s spy vibe, while the Black Widow poster is at once elegant and dangerous.  Though I think the Hawkeye design is a lot of fun, I’m kind of in love with the Black Widow poster.  The brushstrokes, the gun, the tagline; it’s all fantastic.  I seriously can’t wait to see Mondo’s designs for the five remaining characters.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  Black Widow was designed by Olly Moss and goes on sale on April 19th, while Hawkeye was designed by Tom Whalen and goes on sale on April 20th.  As always, follow @MondoNews for on sale announcements.  The posters will be available for purchase at a random time on their respective days.  The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.

Loki and Nick Fury Square Off in New Clip from THE AVENGERS, Plus Over 20 New Images

Yet another clip from The Avengers has landed online.  Following the action-packed clip from last week featuring Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Chris Evans’ Captain America going to battle, this bit from the film focuses on a tense dialogue-driven scene between Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki.  Watching the clip, I’m reminded that Hiddleston was easily the best thing about Thor and I’m eager to see him reprise his complex villain role in The Avengers.  Every word rolls off his tongue with such power, but Hiddleston’s performance infers a great deal of personal anguish behind Loki’s nefarious façade.  Whedon recently revealed to Steve that the Blu-ray/DVD of the film will include 30 minutes of deleted scenes, so I’m sure there’s no lack of great Hiddleston material to be found.

In addition to the clip, we’ve also got a bevy of new images from the film to share with you, so hit the jump to check out the goods.  If you’ve missed any of our bountiful coverage of the film from last week (including clips, interviews, tidbits on upcoming Marvel films, reactions to the movie itself, and more) click hereThe Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.

Sacha Gervasi‘s Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho has picked up a new title, and begun principal photography.  The film will now simply be entitled “Hitchock“, which is probably better since the previous title sounds more fitting for a documentary.  Hitchcock is being billed as a love story between the legendary director (played by Anthony Hopkings) and his wife and partner Alma Reville (Helen Mirren).  The movie also stars Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg, Kurtwood Smith, Wallace Langham, Richard Portnow, and Michael Wincott.

Though the Internet has given way to plenty of nasty and terrible things over the years, one of the most fruitful recent trends has been Q&A sessions with writers/directors/actors/etc. on Reddit.  Mr. Joss Whedon (who’s technically royalty here on the internets) participated in a Reddit AMA recently, touching on everything from a Dr. Horrible sequel to season two of Firefly, to Scarlett Johansson’s prevalence as a “sex object” in much of the marketing for The Avengers.

TOP 5: THE AVENGERS Set Visit, TOTAL RECALL Trailer, AMERICAN REUNION Interviews, TED Trailer and Images, New PROMETHEUS Images

by     Posted: April 7th, 2012 at 12:20 pm

collider-top-5-slice

I feel compelled this week to use the Top 5 opening paragraph to ask our readers a moderately sized favor: if you have any interest whatsoever in the American horror genre and its future, please do your best to find a way to catch The Cabin in the Woods in theaters when it officially opens next weekend. I’m not asking this as a way of manufacturing some hyperbolic scenario in which the success or failure of said film will literally make or break the genre as we know it. Rather, I’m hoping to use it as a reminder that opening weekend box office dollars are one of the best ways that a moviegoer can have his/her voice heard by the film industry’s powers that be. If you’re tired of remakes of remakes and reboots of those remakes, then do your best to financially support something that isn’t afraid to turn genre conventions on their respective heads. Now, all favors aside…

Waiting on the other side of the Top 5 jump this week is a recap of our visit to the set of The Avengers, the first Total Recall trailer, video interviews with the cast of American Reunion, the first trailer/images from Seth MacFarlane‘s Ted, and a batch of new images from Prometheus. You know the drill, a brief recap and link to each of the above awaits…

Marvel has released a new TV spot for The Avengers.  I try not to get excited over 30 seconds of carefully selected, strategically edited advertising footage, but I’ll admit I geeked out over this spot.  I particularly love the moment where Captain America issues a very specific instruction to the Hulk.

Hot on the heels of release date news for Captain America 2 and a new image of Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Disney has released a new 60-second TV spot for The Avengers.  It focuses mainly on Steve Rogers’ story, with a few seconds of action thrown in for good measure.  I’m excited for The Avengers as much as the next guy, but with the bounty of TV spots, trailers, and images that have been thrown our way I feel like I’ve seen half the movie already.  Hopefully they’re keeping at least the last 1/3 of the movie away from the promotional material so I’m not recognizing every other scene from the marketing spots.

Hit the jump to watch the TV spot.  The film also stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. JacksonThe Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.
