After recently pushing the film out of summer and into a fall release, Warner Bros. has unveiled a new Pan trailer for director Joe Wright’s (Hanna, Pride & Prejudice) upcoming re-imagining of the classic J.M. Barrie story. The film takes an origin approach to Peter Pan, as we follow newcomer Levi Miller and other young wartime orphans being kidnapped by the men of the dreaded pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman), thus beginning a series of adventures in Neverland that shape the boy into the hero known to generations as Peter Pan.

If nothing else, Pan will almost certainly be a feast for the eyes. This trailer finally shows off some of the big visuals, and they're as great/insane as I was expecting from Wright's first fantasy/blockbuster film. All of the actors appear be going really out there with their performances, which I think is smart. We've seen Peter Pan many, many, many times now, so what's the point in doing a new big screen version if you're not going to be doing something different? I'm also enthused to see that How to Train Your Dragon composer John Powell is behind the score. Some may be cynical, but my hopes are high for this one.

If you missed our set visit coverage, be sure to check out 50 Things to Know, plus interviews with Wright and Rooney Mara, Garrett Hedlund who plays Hook, and Levi Miller who plays Pan.

Watch the trailer below, which Jackman debuted on The Tonight Show. The film also stars Amanda Seyfried, Cara Delevigne, Adeel Akhtar, Jack Charles, Taejoo Na, Nonso Anozie, Kathy Burke, Kurt Egyiawan, Lewis Macdougall, and Leni Zieglmeier. Pan opens in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on October 9th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Pan:

Peter (Levi Miller) is a mischievous 12-year-old boy with an irrepressible rebellious streak, but in the bleak London orphanage where he has lived his whole life those qualities do not exactly fly.  Then one incredible night, Peter is whisked away from the orphanage and spirited off to a fantastical world of pirates, warriors and fairies called Neverland.  There, he finds amazing adventures and fights life-or-death battles while trying to uncover the secret of his mother, who left him at the orphanage so long ago, and his rightful place in this magical land.  Teamed with the warrior Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) and a new friend named James Hook (Garrett Hedlund), Peter must defeat the ruthless pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) to save Neverland and discover his true destiny—to become the hero who will forever be known as Peter Pan.
