Director Guillermo del Toro's 2006 fantasy drama Pan's Labyrinth will be coming to a stage near you as a musical production. Del Toro and Jeremy Ungar have already written the play that centers on a young stepdaughter of a twisted army officer in 1944 Fascist Spain. The girl finds escape in a fantasy world of imaginative creatures that lead her through an old labyrinthine garden. Paul Williams has been signed to write the lyrics and two-time Oscar-winner Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel) will write the music. Deadline reports that development on Pan's Labyrinth is still going steadily along. After four years of interviewing directors, librettists and composers, del Toro commented on the recent additions to the project as follows:

“I admire and love Gustavo and Paul wrote the perfect album in Phantom Of The Paradise, which I have loved for decades."

The Oscar-winning composer Santaolalla also talked about his enthusiasm for the project:

“I’m so excited about translating Guillermo’s magical vision into music and songs. I’m such a longtime fan of both Guillermo and Paul that to work on this with them is truly a dream come true.”

Pan's Labyrinth is certainly rich source material to work with, both in terms of musical score and visual cues. The London-based producer, Fox, has set Bespoke Theatrical’s Nina Lannan and Maggie Brohn as general managers for the project. Fox also commented on the collaboration:

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Guillermo and the terrific creative team that we have put together to bring the wonderful film of Pan’s Labyrinth to the stage as a musical.”
