The first trailer for Oscar-winning Juno and Young Adult scribe Diablo Cody’s directorial debut Paradise has landed online.  Formerly titled Lamb of God, the film centers on a young woman (Julianne Hough) who loses her faith after a plane crash and decides to go to Las Vegas to experience the wild side of life.  Once there, she encounters a couple of unlikely companions—a bartender (Russell Brand) and a card dealer (Octavia Spencer)—who aid her on her “journey of sin.”  Though this trailer doesn’t really tease anything too spectacular, Cody appears to have crafted an entertaining and heartfelt little dramedy for her first foray behind the camera.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Nick Offerman and Holly HunterParadise will be available VOD on DirecTV starting August 8th before hitting theaters on October 18th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Paradise:

After a nearly fatal accident, 21-year-old Lamb Mannerheim (Hough) is beginning to realize that the world is much bigger than her small, God-fearing Montana town. Armed with a big, fat insurance payout and a checklist of untried sins, there’s only one place for her first taste of temptation…Las Vegas! And, with the help of a few new friends (Brand and Spencer), Lamb embarks on an oddball odyssey of lost souls, broken faith and cheap cocktails…a true journey of the heart.

Like We’re the Millers, this looks like a cute character comedy that I’d enjoy on Netflix, but not necessarily want to make the effort to sit in the theater for. I don’t mean this as a put-down to this movie either. Maybe I’ve just become jaded, old toward the theatrical experience! :

Paradise was what ridley scott wanted to call prometheus 2. Hope this helps persuade him to drop it all together cuz that movie was garbage imo

Just remember those who believe in Christ as a messiah are to be mocked. Those who’s political leanings are not liberal are to be laughed at and growth is defined as moving away from those things into hedonistic behaviour. There’s playing to your audience and then there’s this.

Diablo Cody is a pandering hack who must have had sex with or has blackmail information on someone powerful in the movie industry. OR MAYBE: She had sex with someone and is using that info to blackmail someone. :O

But she won an Academy Award! That means she’s good, right?

“Just remember those who believe in Christ as a messiah are to be mocked.”

Yes. This is true. I’d be mocked if I still believed in Santa Claus.

“Those who’s political leanings are not liberal are to be laughed at…”

Yes, in this political climate. Mostly, but not always.

“…and growth is defined as moving away from those things into hedonistic behaviour.”

Yes, for the first half of that statement and maybe for the second. As long as you’re not hurting others in the process.

Diablo Cody could not write to save her life – and Juno was average at best. But she use to take her clothes off so that makes her an A list writer and director in Hollywood – pathetic
