The first trailer for director Taylor Hackford’s (Ray) crime thriller Parker has been released. Based on the novel series by Donald E. Westlake, the film stars Jason Statham as a professional thief who lives by a set of rules: don’t steal from people who can’t afford it and don’t hurt people who don’t deserve it. When his crew double crosses him and leaves him for dead, he sets out to seek revenge during their biggest heist ever. The pic is a slight departure from Statham’s standard shoot-em-up action fare, but this trailer still has its share of clichés. Moreover, Statham inexplicably plays a lot of dress-up for his heists, disguising himself as a priest and as a rich Texan (with a terrible accent). If you’re a fan of Statham and his films, this is probably right up your alley. If not, Parker looks unlikely to change your mind.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Jennifer Lopez, Michael Chiklis, Wendell Pierce, and Nick Nolte. Parker opens on January 25th, 2013.
Here’s the synopsis for Parker:
Parker (Jason Statham) is a professional thief who lives by a personal code of ethics: Don’t steal from people who can’t afford it and don’t hurt people who don’t deserve it. But on his latest heist, his crew double crosses him, steals his stash, and leaves him for dead.
Determined to make sure they regret it, Parker tracks them to PalmBeach, playground of the rich and famous, where the crew is planning their biggest heist ever. Donning the disguise of a rich Texan, Parker takes on an unlikely partner, Leslie (Jennifer Lopez), a savvy insider, who’s short on cash, but big on looks, smarts and ambition. Together, they devise a plan to hijack the score, take everyone down and get away clean.

Donald E. Westlake is stirring in his grave…

I have the “Out of Sight” poster sitting right behind me, and this poster made me turn around immediately. It’s not the same–but it is.
Wasn’t Payback with Mel Gibson based on the same novels?
Yes, as was the vastly superior — and groundbreaking– “Point Blank.” Donald E. Westlake’s Parker novels, written under the pen name Richard Stark, are as consistently thrilling as the Jack Reacher series. Stathan’s an unlikely choice, particularly cause he’s a Brit. But he’s got lots more potential for measuring up to Parker, shall we say, than Tom Cruise has shown as Reacher. Here’s hoping the movie works and, if nothing else create a new audience for Westlake’s original.
When did Jlo have time to make this movie?
Will be in and out the theatre in a month.
Looks pretty horrible, but bizarrely entertaining. I’m sure it’ll be on dvd in no time for me to check out.
The poster also looks like the one for Law Abiding Citizen: http://tinyurl.com/9mtaato
Damn…those are some embarrassingly bad casting decisions…
I guess we wont have a good Parker adaptation with this one with these one either.
Statham is awesome, but this is not something I’ll spend to go to the theatre for. Wait for it on DVD.
After going and seeing Statham’s last turd ‘Safe’ I think I’ll pass on this dross. RIP Frank Martin.

Sorry for the double post, this site’s comment system leaves a lot to be desired.

And again here.
If you want a good – by which I mean great – Parker adaptation, get the Darwyn Cooke graphic novels. They are beautiful and actually do the novels justice.
Lopez is a great looker but to be honest it should be Chiklis who get’s second billing on that poster. Great actor. Bring back The Shield in some way or form. Please!
