Sony Pictures has unveiled a new trailer and a few clips from the upcoming sci-fi film Passengers. Directed by Oscar-nominated The Imitation Game helmer Morten Tyldum, the film is a rarity in Hollywood: a bona fide 100% original sci-fi story. Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts penned the script years ago, and after a few different permutations, the movie finally came together with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt in the lead roles. They play a pair of passengers aboard a spaceship that is traveling towards a new life on a new planet who are suddenly woken up from hypersleep 90 years too early. After roaming around the ship for a bit and presumably making whoopie, they soon realize they may have been woken up for a reason.

This new trailer really plays up the Titanic angle of the story in that it’s a sweeping epic romance about two possibly doomed lovers aboard a giant ship that’s barreling towards a horrific crash. Unlike Titanic, however, these people are in space, and there ain’t no lifeboats comin’.

This looks like a big, splashy Hollywood blockbuster with smarts and heart, so that’s something to be excited about this holiday season. Moreover, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto—whose credits include Brokeback Mountain, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Argo—looks to have crafted some absolutely stunning imagery that I can’t wait to see on the big screen.

Check out the new Passengers trailer and clips below. he film also stars Michael Sheen, Andy Garcia, and Laurence Fishburne. Passengers opens in theaters on December 21st.
