Director Patty Jenkins Drops Out of THOR 2

Thor 2 is quickly becoming the ugly stepchild of the Marvel universe. First director Kenneth Branagh declined to return, then Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk entered negotiations only to be quickly swapped out for Monster director Patty Jenkins. Now Jenkins has left the project over creative differences, and Marvel is already canvassing agencies looking for a replacement. Hit the jump for more, including a list of possible replacements and Jenkins’ likely future at Marvel Studios.
Deadline reports that a new director is expected to be found quickly, and given Kirk and Jenkins’ backgrounds it’s probably safe to say that they’re looking into the TV world (ie. not too expensive). The report notes that while Jenkins wasn’t the right fit for Thor 2, “the feeling is that she’ll probably end up working on one of these superhero films, but perhaps not on a sequel.” Given that Marvel has plenty of superhero flicks in the pipeline, it shouldn’t be that hard for her to find a replacement property.
A November 2013 release date is looming, so Marvel has to work fast to find their point man. Before Jenkins entered the fray, Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods), James McTeigue (Ninja Assassin), Noam Murro (300: Battle of Artemesia) and Breck Eisner (The Crazies) were all apparently considered, so I wouldn’t be surprised if one of their names pops up. I’m partial to a director with the kind of background that Kirk and Jenkins have, but Goddard or McTeigue could make for an interesting choice. Scripted by Don Payne, the story apparently takes Thor into “literally other worlds” and continues the story of he and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), as well as the relationship with his father.

Half expected this to happen
I like all of Marvels movies and they are obvious hits. I also like Marvels characters a lot more than DC’s (and that’s including Batman). Thor is much more cool in my book.
That all said, it is disappointing that all of Marvels movies don’t have that deep dramatic tone of The Dark Knight. I’M NOT TALKING ABOUT DARK-DRAMATIC TONE. I’m talking about more personal moments of character development and drama. MARVEL SHOULD CONSIDERING THEY HAVE SUCH GREAT DIRECTORS ON THEM.
Here’s the problem:
The running time of all the Marvel movies are shorter than The Dark Knight. Therefore, the length of time given to the great dramatic moments are not allowed to build up. Also, Captain America and Thor seemed to be to much saturday morning cartoon family friendly G rated junk. THEY DON’T PUSH THE EDGE when Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan go almost for an R rating. There’s a reason for the PG-13, so take advantage of it. Even Micheal Bay goes out of his way to make Transformers more adult and less of a silly G rated junk. Where was the sexual tension and teasing in Thor and Captain America?????? There was none. I don’t see Micheal Bay or Christopher Nolan ever making a Marvel movie since they would be so limited. Nolan and Bay’s MOVIES HAVE SURPASED MARVELS MOVIES IN MONEY MAKING AT THE BOX OFFICE. I wonder why.
The Marvel movies play like second rate tv movie versions of The Dark Knight. This is not just my opinion, it’s the opinion of millions of fans on the web. Again, Thor is more awesome than Batman in my book and I was just expecting a better movie and not a mediocre one. I grew up reading all of Marvels comics so it’s disappointing that none of the movies are at the level.
I give you evidence number one: The photo above of Hemsworth and Portman in front of the campire is the most dramatic they could get. REALLYYYYY!?!? That scene played out like two five year old children talking about magical mumbo jumbo. That should NOT have happened considering both actors are talented and so is the Director. I can totally see Micheal Bay slamming his own head against a bull horn out of frustration if he had to Direct that scene. lol That scene should have been something sexual or something more deeply romantic. Not giving each other “Hey I pretty eyes” and “we should go steady.” Give me a break I’m about to throw up. The same goes for Captain America!! You’ve got the two hottest actors and they don’t want more mature scenes.
The problem is actually simple: the best superhero films with that dramatic tone you’re talking about were films where the director came onboard first with a vision and the production started from there. What Marvel and most other studios are doing now is akin to an assembly line. They’re writing the scripts first, then hiring a director to come on board with little prep time. No vision. Sometimes it works, most often the films that come out the other end are lifeless blockbusters.
sad news but think it can still be good
as long as they make Jörmungandr the baddie it will rock
Ssign me up, I’ll direct it.
*Sign..
While Thor was pretty fair and all, and I know its not going to happen, but I would have liked to of seen Guillermo del Toro do Thor.
Nobody needs to step forward with the job, and then everyone from Marvel creative needs to awkwardly stare at Branagh at the exact same time until he feels uncomfortable and says “Fine, I’ll do it.”
Honestly, I like Natalie Portman. But there wasnt a chemistry between Natalie and Chris.
I loved Tom Hiddleston and Antony Hopkins.
Not all comic movies need to be like Dark Knight… which i think is vastly overrated by Nolan fanboys… Devil Common
I just would like to say that I liked Captain America.
Really I thought there was, it might have been weak but it was one of my favorite parts of the movie, I loved the scene where she almost drives off the road taking him to where the hammer is because they cant stop staring at each other.
Seriously… I wanted they replace Natalie Portman.
Hayley Atwell and Chris Evans was 100000x better than Chris and Natalie Portman.
Jame McTeigue (Ninja Assassin)? More like James McTeigue (V for Vendetta). And yes, I’m down for Thor meets McTeigue.
Damn right! That would be awesome!
It may be the result of recently watching the trailer for Cabin in the Woods a couple days ago but when I started reading the article I immediately thought that Drew Goddard would be an interesting choice for replacement. Whedon may be able to help his case as well.
My vote goes to Breck Eisner
What about Tarsem, I think he would be perfect for this. IMMORTALS rocked! It was way better than THOR and you know Tarsem can create cool worlds. That would be my choose though he may be unavailable with CARNIVAL ROW.
Tarsem ? Really ? Why all this hatred ? ^^
Sam Raimi is tha man.
I liked Thor, it was cute. And as far as creating “background” for non-fans, I thought it did a good job as well. And… maybe that’s why it stayed “cute” throughout.
But I agree with Devil Common, now that the premise is done, lay down the good stuff. Make the story interesting, develop the characters some more and please please work hard on the dialogue. For notes on what NOT to do, please reference “Batman & Robin”.
