Cowboys & Aliens has already rounded up an impressive cast led by Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, The Last Airbender star Noah Ringer, Sam Rockwell and Harrison Ford. Now, Deadline reports that the respectable trio of Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), Keith Carradine (Dexter) and Clancy Brown (A Nightmare on Elm Street) will round out the playbill. No details are given for Dano’s role, but Carradine will play the town sheriff, and Brown will also don a cowboy hat for the production. Recall that Jon Favreau (Iron Man 2) is directing the sci-fi comic book adaptation from a script by Damon Lindelof (Lost) and screenwriting team Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek). The talent pool is very deep here, ensures that Cowboys will be one to look out for as we approach its July 29, 2011 release date. Check out the recently released official plot synopsis after the jump.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It’s a town that lives in fear.
But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.
Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he’s been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella (Olivia Wilde), he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents—townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors—all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

This movie sounds really cool. The cast is great. The only thing that doesn't excite me is Favreau directing. He's okay but this is awesome material and maybe it should be in someone else's hands. IRON MAN is okay but the action really lacks some visual style and punch.
I hope I'm wrong.
please don't make Paul Dano's character an annoying SOB or some kind of comic relief — please !
Could this movie rock any harder already?
Well, you're certainly wrong about Favreau's action sequences lacking visual style and punch…
