Paul Greengrass to Direct FC Barcelona Documentary BARCA

     May 17, 2012

Though soccer (or “futbol”) isn’t exactly the most popular sport over here in the States, we all pretend to be huge fans when the World Cup rolls around.  I actually find the sport quite interesting to watch, and now I’m doubly interested seeing as how one of the most talented filmmakers working today is set to tackle the game in a new documentary.  Per 24 Frames, Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum, United 93) will direct a documentary about the legendary FC Barcelona soccer club.

Titled Barca, the film will chronicle the franchise’s preparation for the 2012-2013 campaign.  FC Barcelona is coming off a title win last year, and the film is expected to focus on the club’s successful run over the last four years.  Hit the jump for more.

fc-barcelona-barc-movie24 Frames reports that the film will take a Moneyball approach to the sport, as the filmmakers aim to show “the players and the Barca game, which is known for its crisp and graceful passing schemes, as well as the business strategy behind the team.”  Greengrass has an incredibly talented editor onboard by way of Chris King, who assembled last year’s excellent doc Senna using only archived material.  The project will be shopped at Cannes.

The plan is for Greengrass to move on to Barca after he finishes his next narrative feature, A Captain’s Duty.  That film stars Tom Hanks and tells the real life story of Captain Richard Phillips, who allowed himself to be taken hostage by Somali pirates in exchange for the safety of his crew.  Production on A Captain’s Duty begins soon, with Greengrass set to start work on Barca later this year.  The plan is to release the film ahead of the 2014 World Cup, when interest in soccer (especially here in America!) will be at a fever pitch.

Barcelona aren’t coming off a title win. They lost the league this year to Real Madrid.

      It did say last year.

How fitting… a documentary on the most theatrical players on earth. Couldn’t have picked a more appropriate team. The players probably have an acting degree or something. No denying their talent thought so colour me intrigued.

LoL Barcelona’s passing game is due to Pep Guardiola, He left Barcelona now, doing a film on there preparation for next season won’t exactly be fitting without the man that got them to play the way they did for the last 4 Trophy-laden years.

Barcelona might have very good players, including Messi, but right now it just looks like Real Madrid will be the dominant force…

Now, as a Madrid fan, I HATE Barcelona. but with that said, Guardiola is being succeeded by his assistant coach. So, I would expect more of the same from the team, even down to the way they train and play on the field. But, again, I must say, I really really hate Barcelona!

I don’t think so, he might of been the assistant coach, but he is his own man, he will have his own ideas as well… And being the coach and assistant coach is 2 different things… His not going to have the same mentality like Pep, how will he handle the pressure of coaching Barcelona, how will he react to big challenges? Will the players be as close to him as they were with Pep, can he demand the loyalty and respect that Pep had?… Yes he might have been the Assistant Coach for along time… But, at the end of the day Pep was guiding the club, with his system he brought from coaching the Youth Team…

I’m a Madridista too, but I respect Barcelona for what they have done, but I hate them too lol… But I really don’t think Tito will have what it takes to steer Barcelona back to Winning Titles, Madrid is just getting stronger and Barcelona shows that when things don’t go there way, they get very frustrated and despondent, just look at the Match vs Madrid and Chelsea…p so can Tito really be the man that will keep these players focused mand motivated in those times, I don’t think so… But he will probably try and keep them playing the same way, but of they don’t win anything next season, then this film would be a waste,.. Rather do a film on REAL MADRID, the tides have turned, the best years of Barcelona have gone with Pep.
