Paul Rudd in Talks to Play ANT-MAN

     December 18, 2013

Paul Rudd (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues) has landed the lead of Hank Pym in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, and is currently in early talks with the studio.  Wright co-wrote the script with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block), one that centers on the scientist Pym who invented a substance known as Pym Particles that let him alter his size from nearly microscopic to gigantic.  It looks like Rudd will be donning the special helmet, which both protects his identity and lets him communicate with ants and other insects, when Ant-Man debuts in theaters July 31, 2015.  Hit the jump for more.

The Wrap reports paul-rudd-ant-manthat Rudd is in early talks to play the lead in Ant-Man, having beaten out another contender in Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who recently signed on to produce and star in Warner Bros.’ Sandman adaptation with an eye to direct).  No plot details are currently available for Ant-Man, but with The Avengers: Age of Ultron scheduled to open a few months before the Wright film, it’s safe to assume Pym will be dealing with some of the fallout from the events of the superheroic sequel.  The title villain of that film, however, will not be a major player in Wright’s Ant-Man.

In the comics, Pym was a founding member of The Avengers along with his girlfriend and crime-fighting partner, Janet Van Dyne, aka Wasp.  Together, they took on a number of bad guys on their own, but played a big part in taking down Pym’s own robotic creation, Ultron, when it developed a taste for rebellion.

Some folks have noticed that Rudd is looking a bit thinner lately, and The Wrap reports that’s because he’s getting in shape for the Ant-Man role.  Here’s a look at the slimmed-down Rudd during his recent hosting stint of Saturday Night Live:

I’d wager Rudd’s role in the Marvel universe will take a similar path to that of Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man.  Both bring wit and humor to their human personas while their action-packed counterparts have the luxury of hiding behind a mask and suit of armor most of the time.  I’m more curious about fan reaction to this news, so have at it in the comments!

      Sex Panther for the win!

  • Screamingfatman

Hmmmmm, I really like Paul Rudd, but I’m not sure this is the right role for him, ah well only time will tell.

  • plasticvengeance

PERFECT casting. Like Downey, Rudd has that exact quality needed to capture the jerkiness that is inherent in Pym and yet still remain likeable. A+, Marvel.

    • Jamesy

Agreed 100%, and with Wright at the helm he should be able to showcase Rudd’s talents, imagine Rudd and Downey sharing scenes…epic!

    • sunshine

how is this perfect? hank pym constantly fails and for a while beat up janet. how is that funny or likable? no i understand them needing to make the character likable, but call it what it is, if they’re going for pym its a fail, if they’re making up their own shit, then sure.

  • Calmontoya

    Good choice…

  • Daniel Ronczkowski

    Far out!

  • Zeke

    Yes Yes and Yes.

  • Strong Enough

Cool but Paul Rudd in fight scenes will be weird to look at

    • Batman

I think a fight scene with someone the size of an ant will be weird no matter what actor has the role.

      • Strong Enough

no. paul rudd fighting will still be weird

      • Leo Spaceman

I think that is what Marvel wants with this casting. Not for it to be weird but for it to be someone you wouldn’t expect.

      • Random Bystander

Well, unlike Tony Stark who was also a regular of the party circuit much like RDJ and would’ve gotten in a fight every now and then, Pym is JUST a scientist and it’s much more surprising that he would actually be fighting so it will actually make sense when it seems weird seeing Rudd fight.

  • Daniel Ronczkowski

Okay this article says he has landed the role and also is in talks. Which is it?

    • Grayden

Actors get offered a role by the producers/director and then negotiations begin with the studio as far as pay/royalties/benefits go.

      • Leo Spaceman

Also with Marvel its probably negotiating how many trilogies he will have to do.

  • mattinacan

yes this is exactly as it needs to be. say what you want about Marvel films, but A+ for casting.

  • Drake

“In early talks” and “to Star” are VERY different things.

    • mattinacan

‘In early talks to play Ant-Man’ however, as the title states, does mean to star

      • Drake

I should have been more specific with my criticism. The link on Facebook called this article “Paul Rudd to Star as Ant-Man,” while the real article describes him to be “in early talks” to star in it. The headline that catches eyes and brings you to the page seems to make it out as a fact, as in Paul Rudd WILL be Ant-Man, for sure, everyone agrees, but the actual article says he’s in early talks, which could fall apart over money, scheduling, or a million other things.

Totally my fault for wording my point incredibly poorly.

      • JakSaysStuff

It’s ironic that your initial comment was poorly worded when the point of the comment was to point out that the article title was also poorly worded.

      • Drake

        Yes it is.

in talks means negotiating contract, payment, etc.

  • LL

The headline on the Facebook post reads “Paul Rudd is Ant-Man!” and now the article says he’s in early talks. wtf collider, my enthusiasm just plummeted.

awesome! was hoping he would get it! are they going to bleach his hair? and since edgar wright was talking about a heist aspect to the film does that mean scott lang will be involved as well?

  • Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub

when an actor is “in talks” it means they’re going to do it unless something weird happens. In talks usually means the contract is being worked out. I’d wager a lot of money Paul Rudd will be ANT-MAN

  • Romsy

Edgar Wright is turning the alcoholic, wife beating, insanely jealous of Stark and Banner, egotistical, constantly fighting with Cap and Fury, insubordinate jerk that is Ant-Man/Hank Pym into a comedy starring Rudd? Pass.

    • Julio Navas

Didn´t know trolls put that kind of effort in a comment.

      • Brettski89

How is he trolling? Everything he said about Ant-Man is true, that is why he is actually a deep and interesting character.
The first thing I thought when they said Paul Rudd was ‘Who?’ then after a few seconds it was ‘Oh great a comedy actor to play the part of a wife beating, egotistical cock head, seems about right…’

      • Nerdgasm

Honestly Paul Rudd is the only one that can pull this off without the audience hating him. Just because he’s a comedic actor doesn’t mean that it’ll be a comedy BUT I think a comedic actor si the route to go here.

      • sunshine

you’re the troll. this guys actually knows his shit. hank pym is not a pleasant guy.

    • sunshine

      omg, THANK YOU…

  • The Flobbit

I’ve heard this movie described as a heist film, which gives me no end of joy. If Wright is on board with charismatic Paul Rudd leading the film, followed by a strong cast, THIS could be Marvel’s best commodity.

  • Devin Reed

When news first broke that Rudd was in the running as Hank Pym, I was pulling for him. I’m really excited by this news!

  • FatTeddyMcGentty

Why Ant-Man? Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Ms. Marvel please. What villain(s) would Ant-Man fight in a standalone film?

    • sunshine

      it’s pretty sparse…

  • Beatific

Interested to see what Edgar Wright does with this. Looking forward to it.

  • LEM

I’d like to see him play “You know how I know you’re gay” with the other Avengers.

    • Giovanni

After meeting Thor… ” You sound like you’re from London !

  • Doug_101

Nice! Now all we need is for that Rashida Jones as Janet Van Dyne rumor to pan out and we’ll be ready to go!

    • JBug

      Great call.

  • Jack le Critic

I think he’d be an excellent choice. Whoever gets the role, I’m secretly hoping we get to see a glimpse of them as Giant Man too! That’s a post-credits scene waiting to happen ;)

    • JBug

Wouldn’t that be included in the movie? I assumed that an Ant-Man movie is synonymous with Giant-Man. Can someone set me straight?

      • Jack le Critic

Giant Man came a while after – he somehow reversed the Pym Particles that miniaturised him in the first place, enabling him to grow to incredible heights…I think :s

      • JBug

I liked how even though he can become a giant, he’s most powerful when in ant form. I figured it’d be best to play that dichotomy in the movie. I really hope they figure it in.

  • eternalozzie

I am very relieved to hear this … AntMan/Giantman/Goliath/Yellowjacket/DrPym was always one of favorite characters when i was little. The Simon Pegg rumor made me doubt this movie was going to be decent but Paul Rudd actually fits the roll pretty well.

    • sunshine

you think? damn, i guess i’m just not seeing it.

  • bidi

they could get a three-legged dog to play Hank Pym and i’d watch it because Edgar “I ONLY MAKE GREAT MOVIES” Wright is directing

  • Daniel Johnson

Hmm… I actually think Paul Rudd would work great in that role. And he’d make a fun addition to the Robert Downey Jr./Mark Ruffalo scientist group in Avengers.

  • Colin

Ant-Man is one of the FOUNDING members of the Avengers! C’mon people! Really?!?! You want Black Panther or Cap. Marvel over Ant-Man. Whats wrong with you people!!! Ant-Man will be the shit! You just wait and see! Hes gonna be a badass! Can’t wait for this!
